How Cities in Massachusetts Ranked Based on Car Insurance Costs

Massachusetts is one of the oldest states in the union and thus is full of diverse cities, towns and landscapes. Whether it's in busy Boston or the wilderness of Franklin County, each town and city has its own cost of auto insurance. In this study we analyzed over 348 places in the Bay State to determine where was the most expensive and the least expensive. Yearly premiums for our sample driver ranged from $421 in the least expensive town to $996 in the most expensive city, with a statewide average of $529.

Table of Contents

Least Expensive

The least expensive towns in Massachusetts come mostly from the mid-western part of the state. They are generally very small towns of less than 3,000 people and boast insurance prices as low as 20% less than the state average.

New Salem

New Salem is the least expensive place for auto insurance in Massachusetts. The town, though similarly named, has no relation to the more famous town of "Witch Trial" fame, which is the 327th least expensive city in Massachusetts. Our sample driver was quoted $421 per year, 20% less than the state average. The most expensive city, Brockton, is about 136% more expensive.

Erving

Erving, also of Franklin County, is another small town of 1,800. About 8 miles away from New Salem, the town rests on the banks of Millers River and Wendell State forest making it highly popular for outdoor enthusiasts. As the second least expensive town in Massachusetts, our profile driver got an average quote of $422 per year.

Whately

Whately is another entry from West Massachusetts, though the first not from Franklin County. Our sample driver from the town known for its agriculture was quoted a yearly premium of $422.30, making it slightly more expensive than Erving.

Charlemont

Charlemont another member of Franklin County is the fourth least expensive place in Massachusetts. The small city of about 13,000 boasts a strong tourism industry due to its proximity to Savoy Mountain State Forest. Our sample driver was quoted a $422.35 making it a paltry five cents more expensive than Whately.

Edgartown

In the complete opposite end of the state is Edgartown, the fifth least expensive place in our Massachusetts study. Located in Martha’s Vineyard in Duke’s County the small town boasts only 1,000 permanent residents but gets a boom during the summer. Our sample driver was quoted $423 per year.

Most Expensive Cities

The five most expensive cities are more geographically diverse and overall much larger than the least expensive ones. Three of the five come from the state's North Shore, while all boast at least 35,000 residents and are about 67% to 88% more expensive than the state average.

Brockton

Brockton, Massachusetts' seventh largest city is the most expensive on our list. Our driver from the ‘City of Champions' was quoted a yearly premium of $996, about 88% more expensive than the state average. Perhaps it should not come as a surprise that one of the windiest cities in the country has high costs for our sample motorist and resident.

Revere

The city, famously named after the man who warned us about the British, is the 2nd most expensive place for car insurance in the state. Home to over 50,000 people, the medium sized city is only five miles north of Boston. Our sample driver was given a premium of $938 per year, about 77% more than the state average.

Lynn

Lynn, a fairly large city of 90,000 is the third most expensive for insurance in Massachusetts. Our driver was given a yearly premium of $915, 73% more expensive than the state average.

Springfield

Springfield is the center of Massachusetts' second metropolitan area, as well as the fourth most expensive place. While cities from Western Massachusetts have been relatively inexpensive, Springfield is a large city of over 150,000 and on the banks of the Connecticut River. Generally, large cities on rivers do poorly for insurance rates. Our sample driver from the city called the City of Homes due to its Victorian residential architecture received a yearly premium of $900.

Chelsea

Back on the North Shore, Chelsea, a small city of 37,000 is the fourth most expensive in the state. Our sample driver from the industrial city was quoted $884 per year, about 67% more expensive than the state average.

Boston

We did not forget about Massachusetts' premier metropolitan area. The city does however have multiple neighborhoods so for our master ranking we averaged them all together to get a city average of $827 for our profile driver. Neighborhoods within the city range widely however, a couple are even more expensive than Brockton.

Graph shows how car insurance differs across different Boston neighborhoods

Interestingly, the heart of Boston is the least expensive neighborhood in our study of cost variations. Further out neighborhoods such as Roxbury and Dorchester rank as the most expensive spots for car insurance in Boston and in Massachusetts in general.

How Cost Differs by Place in Massachusetts

In this study we looked at 348 towns and cities across Massachusetts and found a statewide average yearly premium of $529--based on our sample driver and their insurance limits. Generally larger cities on the eastern side of the state were more expensive while small towns in Western Massachusetts were inexpensive.
