Safety Car Insurance Review
Safety Car Insurance Review
Safety Insurance, a regional insurer that operates in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine, is an extremely affordable option for drivers in those states. Safety Insurance has a good selection of coverage options, too, but lackluster customer service keeps us from enthusiastically recommending it.
Safety auto insurance coverage
We were very impressed with the coverage options at Safety Insurance. The company has two packages that offer a wide array of coverage going beyond the basics: Safety Shield and Safety Shield Plus.
The first, Safety Shield, includes the following coverages, among others:
- Guaranteed replacement cost
- Supplemental towing and labor
- Emergency travel expenses
- Rental vehicle loss of income coverage
- Airbag mechanical failure
- Disappearing collision deductible
In addition, Safety offers a higher tier endorsement package called Safety Shield Plus, which includes the following (in addition to all the coverage options above):
- Accident forgiveness
- Expanded personal effects coverage
- Pet coverage: Pays for veterinary expenses if your pet is injured or killed in a crash
- Seat belt coverage: Pays $5,000 if someone is killed in a crash while wearing a seat belt
- Bail bonds
Safety car insurance quotes
Car insurance rates from Safety Insurance were impressively low. We found that the typical price was 60% less than competing insurers for a full coverage policy, and 52% less for the minimum amount of coverage. This makes Safety Insurance an excellent choice for those looking for cheap car insurance.

The typical rate for a full coverage policy was $1,014 per year, while the typical price for minimum coverage was $400 — cheaper than Geico and almost half as expensive as major insurers such as Allstate.

Discounts available at Safety Insurance
Safety Insurance offers a strong selection of listed discounts. In particular, it offers a discount of up to 24% for drivers who have gone six years without an accident or traffic ticket. It also has a sizable bundle discount for combining your home and auto policies.
Safety Insurance discounts:
- Excellent driver plus: Up to 24% for six years without a crash or incident
- Excellent driver: Up to 10% for five years without a crash or incident
- Crash prevention training
- Bundle and multi-policy discount
- Good student discount
- Student away at school discount
- E-customer discount
- Loyalty discount
However, we always recommend caution when evaluating an insurer based on discounts. Insurance rates are different for every driver, and you may find that your rates are lowest at a company that doesn't offer many explicit discounts.
Customer service reviews and ratings
We were disappointed by Safety's customer service ratings. It had worse-than-average ratings from J.D. Power and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) complaint index. The complaint index figure indicates that customers are more likely to complain about the service they receive with Safety than the median insurer.
Safety does have an "A" rating from AM Best, meaning it has an "excellent" ability to pay out insurance claims.
Safety Insurance customer service ratings
Agency | Rating |
---|---|
NAIC complaint index | 1.11 (Slightly worse than average) |
J.D. Power | 787 (Much worse than average) |
AM Best | A (Excellent) |
