There are approximately 40 major auto insurance companies licensed in New Jersey to sell policies. Many of them range from nationally recognized giants, including State Farm, GEICO, and Allstate, to more local and state-specific companies such as the New Jersey Manufacturers Group and New Jersey Skylands Insurance, just to name a few. Below is a listing of the car insurance companies in New Jersey, ranked from the largest to the smallest. There are a number to choose from, so we'll highlight some of the local and useful features most applicable to Garden State drivers, and provide their contact information.

GEICO Group

Known for its slogan, “15 minutes could save you 15 percent or more on car insurance”, the Government Employees Insurance Company (GEICO) is the second largest auto insurer in the United States, but insures the most cars on the road in New Jersey. While GEICO primarily provides auto insurance quotes online, they do have local agents in five locations in New Jersey for drivers looking for personal assistance: Cherry Hill, Hackensack, Hamilton, Monmouth, and Somerset-Middlesex.

NJM Group

The New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Company (NJM) is headquartered in West Trenton, NJ with two other branches in Parsippany and Hammonton. NJM only insures select drivers, but their list of partner organizations is quite long. You must be employed by the state of New Jersey or belong to one of the roughly 20,000 organizations in the New Jersey Business & Industry Association (NJBIA). NJM insures the second most amount of cars on New Jersey roads and have received a financial rating of A++ (Superior rating) from A.M. Best Company, the nation’s leading insurance rating agency.

Allstate Group

Allstate is the third largest car insurer in New Jersey, and one of the largest (and our top pick for) agent-based auto insurance companies. They have a large network of agents and local offices all over the Garden State, which makes it one of the more convenient insurers for motorists who prefer an in-person relationship with their company. The company's headquarters in New Jersey is in Bridgewater at 695 US Highway 202/206.

State Farm Group

Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there at (800) 782-8332. Headquartered in Illinois, State Farm is the largest auto insurer in America with about one in every five cars on the road being insured by the company. Aside from its online quoting system, State Farm also operates a large network of local agents to provide personal customer service for consumers alongside their online quotes. One discount available to New Jersey drivers is the Personal Injury Protection Additional Cars Discount, which is only valid if the owner is the only licensed driver in the house who operates two or more cars insured by State Farm.

Progressive Group

Headquartered in Ohio, Progressive’s main New Jersey service center is located in South Plainfield at 152 West Street. Progressive operates one service center in South Plainfield, NJ (there's one across the border in Willow Grove, PA too). Service centers are one-stop shops where customers who have been in a collision can get their cars fixed and pick up a new rental car as seamlessly as possible. Progressive entered New Jersey in September 2005 and has been growing ever since.

Plymouth Rock

Located in Red Bank, NJ with offices in New Hampshire, Connecticut and Massachusetts, Plymouth Rock can be contacted at (732) 978-6000. Liberty Mutual Group

Based in Boston Massachusetts, Liberty Mutual Group has 15 local offices in New Jersey. Liberty Mutual is the third largest property and casualty insurer and owns many local insurance companies across the globe. This insurer also offers discounts to numerous New Jersey college alumni, certain employers and groups, and State of New Jersey employees. These groups are larger organizations, such as Rutgers University or Fairleigh Dickinson, which mean that a large number of motorists in New Jersey might be able to save on their auto insurance costs with Liberty Mutual.

USAA Group

The United Services Automobile Association is a Texas-based insurer that only offers insurance to people and families that are serving or have served in the United States military. Although USAA serves a smaller portion of the population, it has high ratings for customer service. This is great news for personnel and officers stationed at army bases such as Fort Dix and Picatinny Arsenal in the Garden States, as drivers may be able to get auto insurance from one of the more consistently affordable companies in the nation.

AAA / California State Auto Group

To be considered for these special discounts, there is an annual fee ranging from $15 to $52 depending on where in the state you live. AAA also provides 24-hour roadside assistance through online requests or phone calls for drivers needing help.

Its quotes are based on how well members drive, and not other factors like education or credit score that insurers typically review.
