Best for most people: Geico

Geico has impressively low rates for motorcycle insurance.

The good:

  • Low rates
  • Home and auto bundle discounts

The bad:

  • Not many motorcycle-specific coverages

We recommend Geico as the best motorcycle insurance company for most Utah riders. Its rates are 28% cheaper than the state average, which sets it apart from the other insurers on this list.

Geico's typical price for motorcycle insurance is $572 per year for an experienced rider. It also has a bundle discount, which is usually one of the most generous discounts insurers offer. You may be able to reduce what you pay beyond Geico's already generous rates by buying other policies, like home or auto insurance, from the same company.

Geico's customer service is acceptable, but not outstanding. Its Complaint Index from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is 1.2, indicating it's received slightly more complaints than a typical company of its size. However, it has an A++ Financial Strength Rating from A.M. Best, meaning the company is unlikely to default on its customer claims.

Geico's motorcycle coverage options were about average as well. You can get things like roadside assistance and coverage for accessories, but riders who want a full range of coverage options may be better served at our pick for full coverage, Progressive.

Best for full coverage: Progressive

Progressive's coverage and discount options make it a great choice for riders who want to protect a new or high-end bike.
{"bannerDisclaimers":[],"buttonColor":"primary","buttonIcon":"lock","buttonText":"Get a Quote","cloudinaryImageName":"referral_logos\/us\/insurance\/progressive-2","description":" Progressive's coverage and discount options make it a great choice for riders who want to protect a new or high-end bike.","details":[],"disclaimer":"","featuredTitle":"","link":"https:\/\/\/zero-click.html?cu=https:\/\/\/auto\/&carrier=Progressive;TKzt2XWu22mNOdQNJ2a4RzoV6BRPpNDUopJCfh7rAsgYilC61MaFepVn5p1L6_mIOJTZIazfFd3kcRBYBf9NIndYo-7WqA","name":"Progressive","hideBanner":false,"hideDescription":false,"hideDetails":true,"hideDisclaimer":false,"hideTitle":true,"title":"Progressive"}

The good:

  • Lots of coverage options
  • Replacement coverage included in default policy

The bad:

  • Most expensive motorcycle insurer we found in Utah

Riders who have high-end bikes or who depend on their motorcycle as their sole method of transportation should look at Progressive. While Progressive's rates were the highest we found at any company we looked at, its wide breadth of coverage options and well-regarded customer service make it an appealing option for people who want to pay for the best coverage.

Progressive has the most varied package of insurance coverage options among insurers we considered. In addition to common coverage options like roadside assistance and accessories, Progressive has options like carried contents coverage and OEM parts coverage.

And newly purchased motorcycles will qualify for total loss replacement coverage if the bike is totaled or stolen during the first two years you own it — providing peace of mind for those with brand-new bikes.

Progressive also has well-reviewed service in Utah. Its Complaint Index from the NAIC is 0.91, meaning it has fewer complaints than a typical insurer of the same size. It also has an A+ Financial Strength Rating from A.M. Best, meaning it has "excellent" financial policies in place.

Unfortunately, all these perks come at a cost. Progressive was the most expensive insurer we found in the state of Utah, charging an average of $1,132 per year. That's 43% more than the average cost we found and nearly double the cost of our top pick, Geico.

However, Progressive does offer a range of discount options, including bundling, taking a safety course, and being a member of certain affinity groups, such as the Harley Owners Group (HOG).

Best customer service: State Farm

State Farm has the best customer service of any motorcycle insurer in Utah.
{"bannerDisclaimers":[],"buttonColor":"primary","buttonIcon":"lock","buttonText":"Get a Quote","cloudinaryImageName":"referral_logos\/us\/insurance\/statefarm-2","description":" State Farm has the best customer service of any motorcycle insurer in Utah.","details":[],"disclaimer":"","featuredTitle":"","link":"https:\/\/\/zero-click.html?cu=https:\/\/\/insurance\/auto&carrier=State%20Farm;TKzt2XWu22mNOdQNJ2a4RzoV6BRPpNDUopJCfh7rAsgYilC61MaFepVn5p1L6_mIOJTZIazfFd3kcRBYBf9NIndYo-7WqA","name":"State Farm","hideBanner":false,"hideDescription":false,"hideDetails":true,"hideDisclaimer":false,"hideTitle":true,"title":"State Farm"}

The good:

  • Strong customer service
  • Bundle discounts

The bad:

  • Quotes not available online

For motorcycle riders who want the best customer service available from a motorcycle insurance company, we recommend State Farm. Its customer service ratings were the very best we found in Utah, alongside its national reputation for customer satisfaction.

State Farm got a 0.57 NAIC Complaint Index, meaning it received only about 57% of the complaints as a typical insurance company. This suggests customers are much more likely to be happy with their experience than at many other companies.

State Farm's motorcycle coverage options are generous. Notable perks include coverage for sidecars and protective gear and reimbursement for trip interruption expenses, among others.

It's also a major national insurer that provides life, home and auto insurance, so motorcycle riders who want to cover all aspects of their lives with one company are likely to get what they need at State Farm.

The main drawback to State Farm is that it doesn't provide motorcycle insurance quotes online. You'll have to contact a State Farm agent directly to get a quote or buy a motorcycle insurance policy.

How do you get a motorcycle license in Utah?

People who want to ride a motorcycle in Utah are required to get a motorcycle license. Motorcycle licenses aren't available as separate items in Utah. It's an endorsement to a standard driver's license, and anyone who has a driver's license can apply (meaning you must be at least 16 to ride a motorcycle).

To get a motorcycle endorsement, bring your driver's license to a license office and pass vision and written knowledge tests; this will allow you to get a motorcycle learner's permit. Once you're ready to take the road skills test, return to the license office to take the test.

Alternatively, you can take a motorcycle beginner skills course. Over 15 hours, this provides classroom and on-motorcycle instruction on how to ride a motorcycle. If you successfully complete the course, you'll be able to waive the skills test and get your motorcycle license.
