Harley Davidson Insurance, also known as HD Insurance, doesn't offer the lowest-priced motorcycle insurance quotes, even for Harley motorcycles. However, it combines products and services in a way no other motorcycle insurance company can. On top of that, it offers a great set of optional coverages and a wide array of discounts. Overall, Harley Davidson Insurance is a great choice for most motorcycle riders.

Harley Davidson insurance: Convenient features at reasonable rates
Harley Davidson is arguably the best-known motorcycle company. Despite this, many people may not be aware that Harley Davidson also offers motorcycle insurance policies. Harley Davidson quotes aren't egregiously priced, but they are slightly more costly than motorcycle insurance quotes offered by Geico and Progressive. However, where Harley Davidson excels is in offering a one-stop-shop for all motorcycle needs.
Even if you don't need the aforementioned additional services and products, like a Harley Davidson loan, HD offers great coverage options and discounts on its HD Insurance policies. Furthermore, HD Insurance isn't limited to just Harley Davidson bikes, meaning you can get motorcycle insurance from Harley Davidson regardless of what kind of motorcycle you ride.
Harley Davidson drawbacks
Harley Davidson's biggest drawback is that it's priced at a slight premium to other motorcycle insurance companies. However, we don't consider this to be a huge detriment, since motorcycle insurance is typically more affordable than auto or homeowners insurance — therefore, cost savings aren't as large. In fact, based on our sample, you'd be looking at an $89 difference per year between an HD motorcycle insurance policy and the cheapest option available.
Is Harley Davidson insurance the same thing as Progressive?
Harley Davidson motorcycle insurance is not Progressive insurance, but it used to be. Harley Davidson's insurance policies were originally underwritten by some of what we consider to be the best motorcycle insurance companies, such as Dairyland and Foremost Insurance. Then, Harley Davidson partnered exclusively with Progressive for motorcycle insurance. Today, HD motorcycle insurance is underwritten exclusively by Sentry Insurance Group. This means if you file a claim, Sentry Insurance Group will be responsible for payment — not Harley Davidson.
How much does Harley Davidson's insurance cost?
While Harley Davidson quotes aren't the absolute cheapest, Harley Davidson offers rates that are in the same range as most of its competitors. Based on our sample, a Harley Davidson quote costs $89 more than the cheapest motorcycle insurance quote, which was offered by Progressive. While there are savings to be had, they are minimal.
Motorcycle Insurance Company | Sample Annual Motorcycle Insurance Quote |
---|---|
Progressive | $224 |
Geico | $248 |
Harley-Davidson Insurance | $313 |
Dairyland | $345 |
Sample Average | $282 |
Getting Harley Davidson Insurance quotes is fairly simple, as the company has a great online quoting system. Customers can add coverages as they see fit and see how each impacts the cost of their Harley quotes. We recommend comparing your Harley Davidson Insurance quote to those offered by competitors and the average cost of motorcycle insurance in your state before signing up for coverage.
Does Harley Davidson offer discounts on its coverage?
Harley Davidson Insurance offers policyholders a respectable list of discounts. What makes HD Insurance's discounts great is that several are easy to qualify for. For example, if you recently purchased a bike or you're a homeowner, you'll receive some savings on your Harley quote. Below, we provide a comprehensive list of discounts offered through Harley Davidson Insurance.
Discount | How do you get it? |
---|---|
New bike | Receive a new vehicle discount when you insure a new motorcycle. |
H.O.G. member | Get a special discount if you're a member of the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.). |
Motorcycle endorsement | You may qualify for a discount if you have a motorcycle endorsement on your license for taking part in an approved riding class. |
Experienced rider | Receive a discount based on how long you've been riding motorcycles. The more experienced you are, the greater your discount. |
H-D Riding Academy | Get a discount for completing the H-D Riding Academy New Rider Course. |
Homeownership | If you own a home, you're eligible for a discount on your Harley quote, regardless of what company it's insured with. |
Prompt payer | Receive a discount at policy renewal if you made all your payments on time. |
Claim-free renewal | At policy renewal, receive a discount if you haven't been in an accident. |
Bundled protection | Get a discount if you have other Harley-Davidson Insurance products, like planned maintenance. |
Loyalty | Save money if you're adding a second (newer) bike to your policy or if you've been with HD Insurance for more than one year. |
Multicycle | Insure more than one motorcycle with Harley Davidson. |
Anti-theft | Receive a discount if your motorcycle is equipped with an anti-theft device like an alarm. |
One notable absence from the list above is an auto and motorcycle insurance discount. Harley Davidson doesn't currently offer auto insurance, which means it doesn't have such a discount available. This is a fairly common discount that can be found through other motorcycle insurance companies, including Progressive and Geico.
What's covered under a Harley Davidson policy?
Currently, Harley Davidson offers insurance policies in every state with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii. That said, if you have an HD insurance policy in a covered state, like Tennessee, you'll be insured when traveling to either Alaska or Hawaii. Along with its broad state coverage, HD Insurance offers policies for most motorcycle types, including the following.
- Standard
- Cruiser
- Touring
- Sportster
- Street rod
- Softail
- Dyna
- S series
- Sport touring
- Sport bike
- Trike
- CVO
- V-Rod
- Dirt bike
- Dual purpose
- Scooter
- Moped
- Autocycle
Policyholders have the option of adding extra coverages to their HD Insurance policies, many of which can be useful to specific motorcycle riders. For instance, anyone who enjoys customizing their motorcycle would benefit from HD insurance's optional equipment replacement cost coverage.
Say you purchase custom chrome rims for your motorcycle for $5,000, but they have depreciated to $2,000. If your rims are damaged beyond repair in a covered accident, your insurance company would normally reimburse you for $2,000 minus your deductible. This is in stark contrast to HD Insurance's optional equipment replacement cost coverage, which would reimburse you $5,000 in this scenario for new chrome rims. Other notable optional coverage options include the following.
Vacation Rental: Rental coverage extends the same protection that is included for any motorcycle listed on your policy to any motorcycle you rent. Furthermore, if you're involved in an accident more than 100 miles from home, this add-on may cover eligible expenses, including food and lodging, making it great for riders who enjoy road trips.
Bike Replacement Cost: This add-on is similar to optional equipment replacement cost coverage. The only difference is that this coverage applies to your motorcycle if it's totaled rather than specific parts. So, if you purchase a Harley Davidson motorcycle for $13,000 but its depreciated value is $4,000 at the time of your accident, this coverage would ensure that you're reimbursed for $13,000 as opposed to $4,000.
Harley Davidson Roadside Assistance: This coverage functions similarly to an auto roadside assistance add-on. Harley Davidson Insurance's roadside assistance provides fluid replenishment, battery jump-starts, locksmith services and tire replacement.
Along with the add-on options listed above, HD Insurance provides standard coverage options including the following.
- Bodily injury liability
- Property damage liability
- Comprehensive coverage
- Collision coverage
- Underinsured and uninsured motorist bodily injury
- Underinsured and uninsured motorist property damage
- Personal injury protection
- Medical expenses
Ratings and reviews on insurance by Harley
Your motorcycle company is only as good as its ability to pay your insurance claims in the event of an accident. As previously mentioned, HD Insurance policies are underwritten by the Sentry Insurance Group. As a result, you'll want to consider the Sentry Insurance Group's ratings rather than Harley Davidson's ratings when shopping for coverage. A.M. Best, an independent insurance rating agency, assigned the Sentry Insurance Group a rating of A+ (Superior), which can be taken as a vote of confidence for the company's financial strength and its ability to pay customer claims. For reference, Progressive, one of the largest insurance companies, also has an A+ A.M. Best Rating.

We collected motorcycle insurance quotes from Harley Davidson and top competing companies for a typical policyholder who rides a Harley Davidson bike.
