Benefits of a Policy with Direct General

Drivers can add supplemental services to the standard auto insurance policy offered by Direct General. Roadside Assistance and Emergency Protection. In particular, the Emergency Protection package has a wide breadth of services that function as another layer of protection on top of your standard coverage. The plan pays up to $125 per day up to a year of hospital stays, up to $1,000 of accident medical expense reimbursement, $100 towards ambulances, and $500 of legal fee reimbursements. Rental costs are reimbursed (typically reimbursed only through rental option with a collision and comprehensive coverage), and personal effects are covered. While these benefits are great, they come at a cost of nearly a third of representative quotes.

Another benefit of auto insurance coverage from Direct General Insurance is that they are more receptive towards drivers with non-standard driving records. For example, they cover high-risk auto insurance in addition to standard car insurance. Direct General states on its website that it understands dropped coverage from other carriers, and won't require checking account or credit cards that other insurers may ask for. 

Higher than Average Complaint Records

Unfortunately, there are high numbers of complaints lodged against Direct General Auto Insurance with two reporting organizations. For the most part, policyholders lodged complaints with the NAIC about delays in processing claims related to liability and physical damage coverage. Direct General received four times as many complaints as the median auto insurer did. Put another way, Direct General's share of national complaints was four times as many as its share of national premiums. At the Better Business Bureau, other customers complain of company representatives' failure to follow up on phone calls and issues, and delays in receipt of funds for repairing damaged vehicles.

Auto Insurance Policy & Discounts

Direct General underwrites auto insurance policy in twelve states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. However, coverage within those states is inconsistent. For example, in Florida, Direct General covers the cities of Tampa, Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, and Port St. Lucie, but excludes the market of Miami, FL. 

The sample quote for minimum coverage for a 30 year old single male driving a 2010 Honda Accord LX in Jacksonville, FL was estimated at $383 for six months (be sure to get two other price points to check that this is a fair and reasonable price for you to pay). The online system was relatively easy to navigate, and the questions were straightforward without requiring users to divulge sensitive or personally identifiable information. Note, the company charges an auto policy fee of $25, as well as various assessments and MVR (motor vehicle record) fees. Information on discount availability and amounts were not disclosed by Direct General.
