Find Cheap Auto Insurance Quotes in Your Area
Although Ann Arbor is considered one of the "premier" college towns in all of the U.S., residents still need car insurance like anywhere else. As the home to thousands of young residents, car insurance can prove tricky. Michigan is already expensive for auto policies, and even more expensive for younger drivers. We explore which company young and older drivers are better off going with for the best rate.
Cheapest Auto Insurance in Ann Arbor, MI
By using a 30 year old male with a clean driving record as sample driver, we were able to compare quotes from 22 companies in Ann Arbor to see what companies offered the cheapest rates. The best overall was MetLife followed by Hastings Mutual, with both companies offering full coverage for a year at prices far below the city average. Below you can see the five cheapest auto insurers and how they relate to the city average price.
It is not a mistake that the large auto insurance companies like State Farm or Allstate are absent. Those companies proved to be one of the pricest options for our profiled motorist in Ann Arbor. When you need to buy auto insurance, it is very important you shop around. Brand recognition does not automatically mean the best price.
Cheapest Car Insurance For Students
Unlike most other U.S. cities, the sample 30 year old male driver will only apply to a small proportion of the population. Home to Big Blue, a large percentage of the Ann Arbor populace is between the ages of 18 and 24. For those University of Michigan students, car insurance is more expensive and the best companies change a bit as the graph shows:
MetLife no longer becomes the best option for young drivers, while Hastings Mutual moves into the top spot. Other more expensive options like MEEMIC and Wolverine Mutual also prove to be better options for college drivers than some other companies that were cheaper for older drivers. This just proves there is no one size fits all answer, and it's best to shop around for quotes.

Car Insurance Requirements
Michigan drivers all have to abide by the same car insurance requirements. Michigan is a no-fault state meaning personal injury protection (PIP) must be on every driver's policy. In Michigan, you are also required to hold property protection insurance (PPI). These extra coverages tend to make auto insurance in Michigan more expensive than most other states. We list all that you are required to have on your car insurance policy below:
Type of Coverage
Bodily Injury Liability (BI)
|$20,000 per person/ $40,000 per accident|
|Property Damage Liability (PD)||$10,000 per accident|
|Personal Injury Protection (PIP)||Unlimited|
|Property Protection Insurance (PPI)||Up to $1 million|
Personal Injury Protection
PIP will cover the medical expenses that stem from injuries in an accident, regardless if you or the other driver caused the accident. PIP is also unlimited in Michigan, so your medical bills can reach any cost and your insurer will cover you. If your injuries keep you out of work, PIP will cover your lost earnings up to a certain amount until you recover. To help with the high cost of PIP, Michigan allows you to coordinate your health insurance plan with your PIP. Your health plan will cover all of your injuries while PIP will cover lost wages. If you are on Medicaid or Medicare however, you won't be able to coordinate.
