The policy quoted included bodily injury protection of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident and $50,000 in property damage coverage. Based on our data, the most expensive place in our study's sample policy was more than 2.25x higher than the place with the cheapest motorcycle insurance in Indiana.

Cheapest Motorcycle Insurance in Indiana

The five places with the best motorcycle insurance rates in Indiana are scattered around the state, but tend to be in its southern half. None of the five cheapest places are large Indiana cities, such as Indianapolis, which is a trend that exists in most other states in the U.S. The place with the most affordable motorcycle insurance rates was Rockville, where premiums for our sample property were 26% lower than the average cost of motorcycle insurance in Indiana.

Rockville, IN

The location taking the top spot with the best motorcycle insurance rates in Indiana is Rockville. The town with more than 2,600 residents is located 57 miles from Indianapolis. Rockville is known for an annual Covered Bridge Festival it hosts. There are so many that the town has been dubbed the “Covered Bridge Capital of the World.” We found the most affordable motorcycle insurance rates here in the state, too. Quotes for our study’s sample policy were 26% lower than the state average.

Versailles, IN

The town of Versailles is in southeast Indiana and is only 50 miles west of Cincinnati, Ohio. It’s on the west bank of Laughery Creek and Versailles State Park and has about 2,100 residents. The county jail is located in Versailles, along with a number of businesses, sports complexes and restaurants. Versailles ranks with the second lowest motorcycle insurance rates in Indiana. Premiums for our sample policy were 25% lower than the Indiana average.

Franklin, IN

Franklin is a city directly south of Indianapolis, in the central region of the state. More than 23,000 residents live there and enjoy the small town feel in close vicinity to the state capital. It was named after Benjamin Franklin and is home to Franklin College and a number of large manufacturers such as Toyota. Motorcycle insurance rates in Franklin were 20% lower than our state mean, placing it with the third cheapest motorcycle insurance in Indiana.

Sullivan, IN

Near the western border of Indiana is Sullivan, a city with roughly 4,300 residents and nearby Terre Haute. It’s surrounded by a number of small lakes and the Sullivan County Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Motorcycle insurance quotes for our sample policy were 20% lower than the state average.

Hope, IN

Hope is a town southeast of Indianapolis with about 2,000 residents. It was founded by a reverend and, while it maintains much of its history, today it has a successful art guild and is a community that rallies around local school sports. It also has some of the most affordable insurance for bike riders. Motorcycle insurance rates in Hope were 18% lower than the Indian average.

The five places in Indiana with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates are some of the larger cities in the state, including Indianapolis. They also are scattered throughout the state and are located in the far corners and the central region. The place with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates in Indiana was Gary, where premiums were 68% higher than the state average.

Gary, IN

The place in Indiana with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates was Gary. Gary is a city on the southern shore of Lake Michigan (and only 25 miles south of Chicago) with about 80,000 residents –- a drastically small number compared to its peak population of 178,000 in the mid-20th century. Today, Gary is a popular place for filmmakers to shoot movies. Motorcycle insurance rates in Gary were 68% higher than the state average.

Munster, IN

West of the city of Gary is Munster, a town of approximately 23,000 residents. It has a bustling downtown with restaurants and major retailers, as well as a brewery. In the past, the town has experienced major flooding due to weather events. Motorcycle insurance premiums for our sample policy were 49% higher than the Indiana average.

Indianapolis, IN

The state capital, Indianapolis, is located at the confluence of the White River and Fall Creek. It has more than 848,000 residents and is part of a metropolitan area with a population that exceeds 1.9 million. It was founded in 1821 and is known for many things, including several museums, the indianapolis Motor Speedway and other amenities. Motorcycle insurance rates in Indianapolis were 29% higher than the state average.

Greencastle, IN

West of Indianapolis is Greencastle, a city with about 10,000 residents and the home to DePauw University and Ivy Tech Community college. John Dillinger, a notorious American gangster from Chicago, robbed a bank in Greencastle but the city has a long history of being a great community to live in. Motorcycle insurance in the city is 12% higher than the Indiana average.

Jeffersonville, IN

Directly across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky is the city of Jeffersonville. It has more than 45,000 residents and is home to the Jeffersonville Boat and Machine Company -– the largest inland shipyard in the U.S. Motorcycle insurance quotes in Jeffersonville were some of the highest in Indiana. Rates for our sample policy were 10% higher than the state average.

This comparative study of motorcycle insurance premiums in Indiana was done by gathering and analyzing quotes from five major carriers across 124 municipalities and census-designated places. Our analysis showed premiums quoted for the most expensive place were more than 2.25x more than the cheapest.

Study Methodology

Our study analyzed motorcycle insurance quotes for a sample policy and rider across 124 municipalities and census-designated places in the state of Indiana. The quotes we gathered were from four major carriers - Progressive, Nationwide, GEICO and Dairyland. The rider we gathered quotes from was a 45-year-old male who was married and had completed a motorcycle training course. He also had a clean driving record. The policy itself included bodily injury protection $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident and $50,000 in property damage coverage. The deductibles for both Comprehensive and Collision coverage were $500.

The motorcycle used when gather quotes was a Harley Davidson Street Glide (1690cc) with no anti-theft device installed.
