Grange auto insurance: Our thoughts

Grange Insurance has strong customer service and impressive insurance coverage options for a company of its size, but its rates weren't as competitive as other major insurers. So if you're focused exclusively on a cheap rate, Grange may not be the best option.

Insurance from Grange is only available through independent agents, which has positive and negative sides to it. On the positive side, you'll be able to have a person-to-person relationship with someone who understands your insurance needs and who can comparison shop among different companies for you — not just Grange. However, it also means you can't simply go on Grange's website to get a price like you can with many other insurers — you'll have to pick up the phone or visit an insurance agency to get a quote.

We were very impressed with the accessibility of Grange's claims service. Besides contacting your own insurance agent, you can file a claim online, over the phone or inperson at one of Grange's local claims centers. The direct phone numbers and email addresses of every person in Grange's claims department are all available online, so you'll likely be able to get your claims-related issues addressed promptly without navigating a complex phone menu. Additionally, the Grange website has a lot of detail about what to expect from them during the claims process and how to ensure the process goes smoothly.

Grange's prices for car insurance were slightly more expensive than at competing top insurers — rates at Grange were about 7% above average across four driver profiles. However, we also determined that single drivers may find below-average prices for coverage: Grange's rates were about 10% cheaper than average.

Grange Insurance is available in 13 states, mostly in the Midwest: Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Bottom Line: Strong customer service, especially when it comes to the claims process, offset this company's slightly higher-than-average cost of car insurance.

However, the one exception was rates for our 30-year-old single driver. For that profile, Grange's rates were about 10% less than average; so if you're only shopping for insurance for yourself, Grange may be a more appealing option.

Notably, the company provides a discount to all new customers that enroll in their telematics program, OnTrack Telematics. Once you've enrolled, there's a 90-day driving assessment. Your score from that assessment will determine whether you receive a discount, and its size, at your next policy renewal.

Grange auto insurance coverages

For a smaller insurer, Grange provides a solid range of additional coverages beyond the basics. For example, you can get glass repair coverage, which won't apply a deductible when repairing your windows or windshield if it can be repaired instead of replaced, as well as original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part coverage, which guarantees your car will be repaired with parts made by your car's manufacturer after a crash.

However, you'll still miss out on some benefits that are common at larger insurers, such as coverage for custom parts or transportation expense reimbursement.

Notable optional auto coverages from Grange Insurance

  • Roadside assistance: Pays for the cost of a tow truck if your battery dies, you run out of gas or you need a tow.
  • Glass repair: Covers the cost to fix your windows or windshield if it can be repaired instead of replaced. This typically has a lower deductible than standard comprehensive/collision coverage.
  • Pet injury: Pays for medical care of your pet if it was injured due to a covered crash or incident.
  • Mobile device: Pays for damage to your mobile device if it's due to a covered crash or incident.
  • Identity theft: Pays for expenses related to having your identity stolen.
  • OEM part coverage: Guarantees that your car will receive genuine manufacturer parts when it's repaired (after a covered crash).
  • Loan/lease gap coverage: Pays the difference between your car's value and the amount you have left on your loan or lease, should your car be totaled or stolen.
