Car Insurance Requirements

As a no-fault state, personal injury protection (PIP) is apart of the minimum car insurance requirements in Michigan. In Michigan PIP is limitless (opposed to other states where it is usually between $10,000 and $50,000) meaning your medical bills are covered no matter the cost. Drivers are also required to hold personal property insurance (PPI). Below we list all the requirements for car insurance in Michigan

Type of CoverageLimits
Bodily Injury Liability (BI) $20,000 per person/ $40,000 per accident
Property Damage Liability (PD) $10,000 per accident
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Unlimited
Property Protection Insurance (PPI) Up to $1 million

Personal Injury Protection

As we say above, personal injury protection is unlimited in Michigan, so your medical bills can go into the millions and still be covered. PIP will also cover your lost wages up to a certain amount until you recover if you are disabled as a result of your injuries. Unfortunately, these benefits makes rates more costly in  Flint and in the rest of Michigan. The state allows you to reduce your premium however when you coordinate your health insurance plan with your PIP. Your health insurance covers your injures while PIP will continue to pay for lost wages in the event of a disability. Note though, if you have Medicare or Medicaid, you will not be able to coordinate the two.
