Yes, a Lexus is generally fairly expensive to insure. We found a typical insurance price of $4,650 across all currently available models. That's about 10% more than the typical cost to insure a Mercedes-Benz. Lexus is owned by Toyota, but a Lexus costs about twice as much to insure as a Toyota-branded vehicle ($2,132 per year, on average).

Luxury cars generally have higher insurance costs than less expensive cars. One reason for this is because repair costs after a crash tend to be higher: the bumper of a $56,000 Lexus GX costs more than the bumper on a typical Kia.

Luxury cars can be likely targets for theft, as well. And higher-priced vehicles often have more powerful engines, which usually results in higher insurance rates.

However, high insurance costs for cars like Lexus vehicles are sometimes mitigated by safety features that haven't made it to less expensive models, such as sensors that detect turns in the road or oncoming traffic.

The typical price to insure a new Lexus ES is $3,388 per year, or $282 per month. That's 28% less than the average price across all Lexus models, and the second-cheapest Lexus to insure, behind only the NX SUV.

However, the cost to insure an LS tends to drop for older models. A 2018 LS costs $1,003 less per year to insure than a new model.

A Lexus LX costs $4,408 per year to insure, on average. The premium full-size SUV is actually 5% cheaper than average to insure among all Lexus vehicles, though it's about $400 more to insure than its closest sibling, the Lexus GX.

Lexus NX insurance rates

At just $2,946 per year, the Lexus NX SUV is the cheapest Lexus model to insure. That's 37% less than the average rate we found across the entire brand, and $2,225 cheaper than the Lexus UX. While both are smaller SUVs with affordable sub-$40,000 MSRPs, The NX's larger size may help explain why its rates are so much lower.

The cost of insurance for a new Lexus RX is actually substantially cheaper than for older models. Insurance rates for a 2021 RX are nearly $4,000 less expensive than rates for a 2018 model.

Lexus RC insurance costs

Lexus' more affordable coupe, the RC, costs an average of $3,751 per year to insure. That's 19% less than the average cost to insure a Lexus.

The RC coupe is much less expensive to insure than Lexus' more powerful model, the LC. The RC has a much smaller price tag, at $43,545, along with a less powerful engine. Faster cars tend to have more expensive insurance because they're more likely to be involved in a serious accident.

However, drivers can save substantially on insurance by going with an older model of RX. We found average rates for the 2019 model to be just $3,272 — less than half the price of a new model.

The Lexus UX is the cheapest Lexus you can buy, but it's not the cheapest to insure. The average rate for Lexus' entry-level crossover SUV is $5,170 per year. That's about 11% more expensive than the average price across all Lexus models.

However, older UX models tend to have much more affordable rates. A 2019 model (the first year the UX was available) has a typical insurance price of $3,627, and the 2020 model is under $3,000.

Lexus GS insurance costs

The typical price of insurance for the newest model of the Lexus GS is $3,743 per year for the 2020 model. The GS was discontinued after the 2020 model year, but it may still be available at some dealerships.

Compared to the average cost of insuring a 2020 Lexus, the GS is about 10% cheaper — but not as affordable as the LS or UX.

The cheapest insurer we found for a GS is State Farm, where the typical price of $2,137 is 43% less than the average across all insurers.

Methodology

To find the average cost of insurance for a Lexus, we gathered thousands of quotes for a sample driver living in Texas: a 30-year-old man with no recent accidents and average credit. Rates are based on a full-coverage policy with the following limits:

Lexus stopped making the Lexus GS after the 2020 model year. As a result, we excluded it when calculating the average cost to insure a Lexus.
