2015 Safest Cities in New Jersey

*To account for factors such as population fluctuation during the summer months, we have revised our methodology. Please see below.

Looking at crime statistics in a vacuum isn’t always the best way to determine how safe your town is. The analysts at ValuePenguin took a comprehensive look at crime statistics at over 350 cities and towns in New Jersey to determine which are the safest and least safe relative to each other. We factored in population and different types of crimes to arrive at this list. Check out where your city ranks:

Five Safest New Jersey Cities

Our five safest cities are all small towns, mostly located in northern New Jersey, with the exception of New Hanover Township. They all have exceptionally low rates of violent crime and relatively little property crime. The average adjusted crime score for our five safest cities is around 51 and the scores range by around 60 points (low crime scores are better than high crime scores - some cities scored as high as 3,000).

1. New Hanover Township, NJ

Of the 353 cities surveyed, New Hanover Township takes the top spot on our list with a crime score of 17. The city is located in Burlington County, in the central portion of the state. No violent crime was reported in the town for 2013. The city is included in the New Jersey Pinelands Natural Reserve, which is a swath of forest with a unique ecology that cannot legally be touched.

  • Population: 8,011
  • Crime Score: 17

2. Old Tappan, NJ

Old takes second place with a crime score of 48 – 93% better than an average New Jersey city. Along with Haworth and Harrington Park, it was originally part of Harrington Township. The city is home to four locations that have made it onto the National Register of Historic Places.

  • Population: 5,882
  • Crime Score: 48

3. Tewksbury Township, NJ

The Hunterdon County town ranks third, with a crime score of 77, beating the average New Jersey town by 88%. The city is in north-central New Jersey and is named after Tewksbury, England. The township is home to the oldest German Lutheran parish in New Jersey.

  • Population: 5,854
  • Adjusted Crime Score: 77

4. Chatham Township, NJ

5. Park Ridge, NJ

Park Ridge takes fifth place on our list of the safest cities in New Jersey. The town is located in Bergen County, in the northern portion of the state. The city was also home to the Hertz rental car company headquarters until they announced a move to Florida in 2013.

  • Population: 8,948
  • Adjusted Crime Score: 82

New Jersey’s Safest Places by Population

In order to compare cities with similar population and crime dynamics, we broke out the cities by three population categories. We included the average crime scores by population breakdown for Big, Midsize, and Small cities and towns.

Featured Large City (over 45,000) - Parsippany–Troy Hills Township

According to Money Magazine, Parsippany is the 17th-best place to live in the U.S. The city can now add another accolade to the list – it’s the safest large city in New Jersey. The city beat out Bridgewater Township and many others for the coveted spot. It has a crime score of 270, about 12 points lower than Bridgewater.

  • Population: 53,851
  • Crime Score: 270
  • Average Large City Crime Score: 869

Featured Midsized City (20,000-45,000) - Bernards Township

Located in Somerset County, Bernards Township is safest midsized city in New Jersey. Phish heads will know Bernards Township as hometown to band member Page McConnell. The city has a crime score of 114.

  • Population: 26,880
  • Crime Score: 114
  • Average Midsized City Crime Score: 680

Featured Small City (under 20,000) - Byram Township

The “Township of Lakes” also happens to be the 6th safest small town in New Jersey, as well as the 6th safest town overall. It is located in Sussex County, in the northernmost tip of the state. The town is home to Waterloo Village, which exhibits historical artifacts from the town’s previous Native American inhabitants as well as historic gristmills and sawmills.

  • Population: 8,154

Full List of New Jersey Cities

Below is a list of the 353 cities we included in our study on the safest cities in New Jersey. The towns are listed from safest to least safe with their corresponding " Adjusted Crime Score" highlighted. If you want to know how we arrived at these rankings, you can take a look at our methodology here.

Methodology

We sourced our data from 2013 FBI crime statistics by city, which provides the most recent data available. We excluded towns with populations less than 5,000 because many of these towns experience serious fluctuations in population during the summer months and have population sizes too small to fairly compare to larger cities on the list. We attempted to account for seasonal population statistics, as many of the shore cities listed have much larger summer populations. However, there is little data detailing this change in population, and the crime rates reported by the FBI are not broken out by month. The raw data report included violent crimes (murder/manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) and property crimes (burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson) from all law enforcement agencies that participate in the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting program.

We standardized the data to reflect violent and property crimes per 100k, to account for population. We then aggregated a "crime score". In order to calculate this, we weighted violent crime at 90% and property crime at 10%; though property crime is far more prevalent, we figured that the violent crime data points are more relevant when calculating the relative safety of these cities. To account for the fact that smaller cities with slightly higher numbers of crime are penalized more severely, we applied a logarithm to the population and multiplied it by the “crime score” to arrive at an “adjusted crime score.” We then ranked the cities relative to each other based on their adjusted crime scores.
