Whether you were issued a traffic citation or you're looking for cheaper car insurance rates, you might want to take a defensive driving course. It's a good way for any driver in New Jersey to lower the cost of car insurance.

There are two ways to attend a defensive driving course in New Jersey: through a certified in-person class or online.

The course must be approved by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). Defensive driving courses last six hours in person. Online courses have the same amount of content but can be done at your own pace. At the end of either course, all participants must pass an exam. New Jersey requires that drivers complete a multiple-choice test with at least 80% correct answers for a passing grade. In-class participants can take the exam three times without penalty.

What are the benefits of taking a defensive driving course in New Jersey?

When you pass a New Jersey–certified defensive driving course or mature-driver improvement course, you get these benefits:

  • Point reduction: When you take a defensive driving course, you'll knock two points off your driver's license record. This is beneficial, because if you accumulate 12 to 14 points, the state suspends your license for 30 days. The state allows drivers to take this course once every five years to get the two-point reduction, but you can only reduce existing points, not points you might earn in the future.
  • Auto insurance discounts: Many car insurance carriers in New Jersey provide a discount of around 5% to 10% once you successfully complete a defensive driving course. The discount lasts up to three years.

Defensive driving courses should not be confused with the New Jersey Driver Improvement Program. If you accumulate enough points on your license, the state may send you a notice of eligibility for a driver improvement course. Completion of this course removes three points, but you cannot take one of the defensive driving courses to satisfy this.

Defensive driving course providers in New Jersey

To help you shop for defensive driving courses, we've researched the approved online and in-classroom providers and their prices. The New Jersey MVC site does not include prices, because they want to advertise all of your options equally. Your best bet is to use one of the online MVC-approved classes, since they're more convenient and flexible in letting you complete the requirements at your leisure.
