The “Evergreen State” in the Pacific Northwest region of the U.S. was named after President George Washington and is the 13th most-populous state in the country. The state of Washington is known for its dramatic geography and distinct beauty, which make it a great place to ride a motorcycle. To see where bike owners in the state pay the most for insurance, we gathered motorcycle insurance quotes from four major carriers for a 45-year-old male rider. The policy quoted included bodily injury protection of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident and $50,000 in property damage coverage. Our study showed the most expensive place for the sample policy was 29% higher than the cost of the cheapest in Washington.

Cheapest Motorcycle Insurance In Washington

We found that GEICO had the best motorcycle insurance quotes in the state of Washington for our sample policy and rider. Data was only available for four carriers in the state.

Nationwide had the second best motorcycle insurance quotes in the state of Washington, with an average rate only slightly higher than GEICO's at $339. The other two companies, Dairyland and Progressive, had quotes above the Washington average. Quotes from Dairyland averaged $488. Progressive's quotes for the sample policy and rider were by far the most expensive. At $762 the carrier's quotes were more than 2x the cost of GEICO's.

Best Motorcycle Insurance Rates In Washington: By City

Like in many other states, the five largest cities in Washington have some of the highest motorcycle insurance rates in the state. The only exception to this trend was Spokane, which is the second largest city, but had rates that were only slightly higher than the Washington average.

Seattle, WA

Seattle has more than 662,000 residents and is part of a metropolitan area that includes more than 3 million. The city is home to the third largest port in the U.S., in terms of container handling, and is a major trade gateway. It's home to the headquarters of a number of large companies and the infamous Space Needle. Motorcycle insurance rates there were 21.9% higher than the Washington average.

Spokane, WA

Spokane has more than 208,000 residents and is the center of a metropolitan area that has more than half a million. The area has been settled since the early 19th century and once had a stock exchange. Motorcycle insurance rates in Spokane were only 1.4% higher than the state average – significantly lower than the other largest cities in Washington.

Tacoma, WA

The city of Tacoma is one of the "most walkable" cities in the U.S. and has roughly 200,000 residents. It is nearby Mount Rainier, an active stratovolcano and the highest mountain in the state of Washington. Motorcycle insurance rates in Tacoma was 11.7% higher than the state average.

Vancouver, WA

Vancouver had the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates in the state of Washington. Like the Canadian city with the same name, Vancouver, Washington is a bustling city. It has about 170,000 residents and is the fourth-largest city in the state of Washington. It also has the least affordable motorcycle insurance policies. Premiums for out sample policy and rider were 21.9% higher in Vancouver than the state average.

Bellevue, WA

Across Lake Washington, the city of Bellevue is Seattle’s largest suburb, with more than 133,000 people. It is the home or headquarters to a number of companies and many who work for larger ones nearby, such as Microsoft and Nintendo. Motorcycle insurance in Bellevue is some of the most expensive in the state and rates quoted in our study were 15.6% higher than the Washington average.

Most Expensive Motorcycle Insurance In Washington

The places with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates included or were near Seattle, with the exception of Vancouver. All of the most expensive cities have large populations and were on the west coast of the state of Washington. The city with the highest premiums in our study was Vancouver, where quotes for the sample policy were 21.9% higher than the state average.

Vancouver, WA

The city with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates in the state of Washington was Vancouver. Like the Canadian city with the same name, Vancouver, Washington is located on water. The Columbia River separates Vancouver from Portland, Oregon. It has about 170,000 residents and is the fourth-largest city in the state of Washington. It also has the least affordable motorcycle insurance policies. Premiums from our study were 21.9% higher in Vancouver than the state average.

Seattle, WA

The seaport city in northwest Washington has more than 662,000 residents and is part of a metropolitan area that includes more than 3 million. The city is home to the third largest port in the U.S., in terms of container handling, and is a major trade gateway. It also is a center for logging, technology and aeronautics. There are a lot of great things about Seattle, but it has some of the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates in the state. Quotes for the sample policy also were 21.9% higher than the state average.

Mercer Island, WA

Mercer Island is an island that is part of Kings County in Washington. It is connected to the mainland via bridges and has approximately 23,000 residents. The island was named after the Mercer brothers of Seattle, who reportedly went there to hunt and fish. Mercer Island does not have cheap motorcycle insurance, compared to other locations in the state. Premiums for our sample property were 17.4% higher than the state average. 

Bellevue, WA

West of Seattle across Lake Washington is the city of Bellevue. It is Seattle’s largest suburb, with more than 133,000 people, and has experienced rapid change in the last decade. It is the home or headquarters to a number of companies and many who work for larger ones nearby, such as Microsoft and Nintendo. Motorcycle insurance in Bellevue is some of the most expensive in the state. Premiums for the sample property were 15.6% higher than the state average.

Federal Way, WA

Federal Way is a King County city between Seattle and Tacoma. It is more than a commuter town between the two cities and many of its 90,000 residents work there as well. U.S. Olympic speed skater Apolo Ohno went to high school in Federal Way. Like most of the surrounding areas, the city has access to great motorways for bikes, but the insurance is expensive. Motorcycle insurance premiums in Federal Way were 14.9% higher than the state average.  

Average Motorcycle Insurance Rates In Washington: By City

This comparative study of motorcycle insurance premiums in Washington was done by gathering and analyzing quotes from five major carriers across 80 municipalities and census-designated places. Our analysis showed premiums quoted for the most expensive place were 29% more than the cheapest.

Study Methodology

Our study analyzed motorcycle insurance quotes for a sample policy and rider across 80 municipalities and census-designated places in the state of Washington. The quotes we gathered were from four major carriers: Progressive, Nationwide, GEICO and Dairyland. The rider we gathered quotes from was a 45-year-old male who was married and had completed a motorcycle training course. He also had a clean driving record. The policy itself included bodily injury protection $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident and $50,000 in property damage coverage. The deductibles for both Comprehensive and Collision coverage were $500.

The motorcycle used when gathering quotes was a Harley Davidson Street Glide (1690cc) with no anti-theft device installed.
