However, in much of Nevada there is beautiful scenery and plenty of road to cruise on a motorcycle. To see who in Nevada has the most expensive motorcycle insurance, we gathered motorcycle insurance quotes from four major carriers for a 45-year-old male rider. The policy quoted included bodily injury protection of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident and $50,000 in property damage coverage. Our study showed the most expensive place for the sample policy was 55.5% higher than the cost of the cheapest in Nevada.

Cheapest Motorcycle Insurance in Nevada

In Nevada, we found the motorcycle insurance company that quoted the best rates for a sample policy and rider was GEICO. The company's average quote was $169 -- more than 78% lower than Progressive's average premium quoted.

One other motorcycle insurance company -- Nationwide -- also quoted rates that were more affordable than the Nevada average, at $484. Dairyland's average motorcycle insurance premium quoted was $679, which was significantly higher than bother the Nevada average, as well as GEICO and Nationwide.

We took a close look at motorcycle insurance rates quoted by companies in some of Nevada's largest cities. The findings were consistent with those in other states in the U.S. where we conducted an identical study with the same sample rider and motorcycle insurance policy. Larger cities tend to have higher than average premiums and that proved to be the case in the state of Nevada.

Las Vegas, NV

The city internationally known for its gambling, shopping, dining and nightlife is also Nevada's largest city. It's home to more than 583,000 residents and is part of a statistical area with more than 2.3 million. The city has a history unlike any other, with close ties to travelers, military training, nuclear tests, organized crime and hospitality. Motorcycle insurance rates in Las Vegas were 32.5% higher than the state average.

Henderson, NV

Just south of Las Vegas is the city of Henderson, which has more than 285,000 residents. It's been recognized as one of the safest cities in the U.S. and has a hot desert climate. Motorcycle insurance rates in Henderson were 23.5% higher than the state average.

Reno, NV

The "Biggest Little City in the World" is one of the largest in Nevada with about 233,000 residents. Reno is part of a metropolitan area with more than 420,000 people and has long been an important mining and railroad community. It's also a popular vacation destination because of its vicinity to Lake Tahoe. Motorcycle insurance rates in Reno were 8.3% higher than the Nevada average.

Carson City, NV

Carson City has more than 55,000 residents and is a popular destination since it is adjacent to Lake Tahoe. The city is also home to a number of museums and has served as a location for a number of films. Motorcycle insurance rates in Carson City were 14.7% lower than the state average.

Fernley, NV

West of Reno is Fernley, a city with about 20,000 residents and the Fernley 95A raceway. The city was initially an agricultural and ranching community and many still work in those industries there, today. Motorcycle insurance rates in Fernley were 5.4% higher than the Nevada average.

Unlike the places in Nevada with the cheapest motorcycle insurance rates, the most expensive rates differed from one another. We broke down the top five most expensive places below. The place with the most expensive motorcycle insurance premiums was Las Vegas, where rates were 32.5% higher than Nevada's average.

Las Vegas, NV

The place with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates in Nevada was Las Vegas. “Sin City” is world-renown for its hotels, casinos and entertainment. The city is on the floor of the Mojave Desert and almost 40 million people visit the city throughout each year. The city’s history and affiliation with organized crime is catalogued at The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, which opened there in 2012. Motorcycle insurance rates in Las Vegas were 32.5% higher than the state average.

Henderson, NV

The City of Henderson is the second largest in Nevada and a large suburb of Las Vegas. More than 255,000 people live in Henderson, which was named one of the best U.S. cities to live in by Bloomberg Businessweek. Motorcycle insurance rates in Henderson were 23.5% higher than the state average.

Laughlin, NV

Laughlin is a census designated place in Clark County, located right at the southern tip of Nevada. It is on the west bank of the Colorado River and only about an hour and half drive from Lake Havasu in Arizona, which is a popular vacation spot. Motorcycle insurance rates in Laughlin were 23.3% higher than Nevada’s average, according to our study.

Paradise, NV

Paradise is also a census designated place and a populous suburb of Las Vegas. More than 223,000 people live in Paradise, which is home to much of the Las Vegas Strip and McCarran International Airport. Motorcycle insurance rates in Paradise were 22.2% lower than the state average.  

Winchester, NV

The town of Winchester is wedged between the city of Las Vegas and the census-designated Paradise. It has about 23,000 residents and part of the Las Vegas strip is located there. Even though the town is recognized as Winchester, the U.S. Postal Service assigns residents a “Las Vegas, NV” address. Motorcycle insurance premiums in Winchester are some of the least affordable in the state. Rates for our sample property were 21.9% higher than the state average.

This comparative study of motorcycle insurance premiums in Nevada was done by gathering and analyzing quotes from five major carriers across 29 municipalities and census-designated places. Our analysis showed premiums quoted for the most expensive place were 55.5% more than the cheapest.

Study Methodology

Our study analyzed motorcycle insurance quotes for a sample policy and rider across 29 municipalities and census-designated places in the state of Nevada. The quotes we gathered were from four major carriers -- Progressive, Nationwide, GEICO and Dairyland. The rider we gathered quotes from was a 45-year-old male who was married and had completed a motorcycle training course. He also had a clean driving record. The policy itself included bodily injury protection $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident and $50,000 in property damage coverage. The deductibles for both Comprehensive and Collision coverage were $500.

The motorcycle used when gathering quotes was a Harley Davidson Street Glide (1690cc) with no anti-theft device installed.
