To see who in North Carolina had the best motorcycle insurance rates, we gathered motorcycle insurance quotes from three major carriers for a 45-year-old male rider. The policy quoted included bodily injury protection of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident and $50,000 in property damage coverage. Our data showed that the most expensive place for the sample policy was more than 40% the cost of the cheapest in North Carolina.

Cheapest Motorcycle Insurance in North Carolina

A study of motorcycle insurance rates in North Carolina using a sample rider and policy found GEICO had the best motorcycle insurance rates in the state. GEICO's premiums quoted were more affordable than the state average and more than 34% lower than Progressive's.

ValuePenguin found the motorcycle insurance company with the best quotes in North Carolina for a sample policy and rider was GEICO.

Nationwide's motorcycle insurance quotes were only $1 less than the state average. The only other motorcycle insurance company with available data was Progressive, whose rates were significantly more expensive than the others. Quotes from Progressive were more than 20% higher than the North Caroline average.

Best Motorcycle Insurance Rates In North Carolina: By City

We looked specifically at some of the largest cities in North Carolina to see which ones had the best motorcycle insurance rates. The findings were similar to those of an identical study in other states – larger cities tend to have higher premiums. However, there were a couple cities in North Carolina that had quotes lower than the state average.

Charlotte, NC

Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina and one of the largest in the southeast U.S. with more than 800,000 residents. It serves as home to the corporate headquarters of a number of large companies, including Bank of America, and professional sports teams like the Carolina Panthers. Motorcycle insurance rates in Charlotte are relatively affordable given the size of the city, at 8.8% higher than the North Carolina average.

Greensboro, NC

The third-largest city in the state has more than 277,000 residents and is at a major intersection of roads and highways in central North Carolina. It is known for it's vibrant local culture, professional sports teams, and history. Motorcycle insurance rates in Greensboro were 15.6% higher than the state average.

Durham, NC

Just east of Greensboro is Durham, which has more than 251,000 people and is known for the presence of strong area academic institutions, such as Duke University. Together, with North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina, they form a region known as the Research Triangle of the state. Motorcycle insurance rates in Durham were 1% lower than the state average.

Winston-Salem, NC

Called the "Twin City" for it's history of both arts and innovation, Winston-Salem is home to more than 240,000 residents and has been ranked one of the best places to live in the U.S. It is often affiliated with the tobacco industry, especially the locally headquartered R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Motorcycle insurance rates in Winston-Salem are 4.2% lower than the North Carolina average.

Fayetteville, NC

Fayetteville is home to Fort Bragg, a major U.S. Army base in the U.S. It's also home to more than 204,000 residents and part of a metropolitan area with more than 370,000. The city has a rich colonial history and is known for its beauty and architecture. Motorcycle insurance rates in Fayetteville were 27.3% higher than the state average.

Most Expensive Motorcycle Insurance in North Carolina

The five places with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates in North Carolina were scattered across the state and varied in population size. These distinctions are a unique blend within one state, compared to others where we performed an identical study with the same sample policy. In other states, the five most expensive places frequently were all medium-sized or large cities. The place in North Carolina with the most expensive quotes was Raeford, where rates were 27.3% higher than the state average.

Raeford, NC

The place in North Carolina with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates was Raeford, a city west of Fayetteville. Raeford was named after Confederate General Robert F. Hoke and today, it has a population of roughly 4,600 residents. It’s also home to Rockfish Speedway, a dirt racetrack. For those interested in riding a bike on the roads, the city unfortunately has the most expensive motorcycle insurance in the state. Quotes for our sample motorcycle insurance policy were 27.3% higher than the North Carolina average.

Fayetteville, NC

In southern North Carolina is the city of Fayetteville, which has more than 200,000 residents. It has received numerous awards for being a great place to live. Fort Bragg and Pope Army Airfield Field are located in the northern part of the city. Motorcycle insurance premiums in Fayetteville were 27.3% higher than the state average.

Gastonia, NC

Just west of Charlotte, North Carolina is the city of Gastonia. With about 71,000 residents, it is the largest of what are known as the “satellite cities” to Charlotte. A small mountain range in within the city limits, which are filled with foliage, making the city a great blend of urban and rural. Motorcycle insurance rates in Gastonia were 16.2% higher than the state average.

Greensboro, NC

Greensboro is located in the northern half of North Carolina and is just east of Winston-Salem. It is home to more than 280,000 residents, making it the third-largest city in the state. After the American Civil War, industrialization took off in Greensboro and today the economy has diversified. Motorcycle insurance premiums in Greensboro were 15.6% higher than the state average for our sample policy. 

Hampstead, NC

North of Wilmington and on the North Carolina coastline is Hampstead. It’s a small unincorporated place with about 4,000 residents and a number of nearby golf courses. Hampstead hosts the annual North Carolina Spot Festival, which serves more than 6,000 meals to raise money for the local schools and community. Motorcycle insurance rates in Hampstead were 15.2% higher than the North Carolina average.

This comparative study of motorcycle insurance premiums in North Carolina was done by gathering and analyzing quotes from three major carriers across 106 municipalities and census-designated places. Our analysis showed premiums quoted for the most expensive place were more than 40% higher than the cheapest.

A ValuePenguin study using a sample rider and policy found the average motorcycle insurance policy in North Carolina was $551.

Study Methodology

Our study analyzed motorcycle insurance quotes for a sample policy and rider across 106 municipalities and census-designated places in the state of North Carolina . The quotes we gathered were from three major carriers: Progressive, Nationwide and GEICO. The rider we gathered quotes from was a 45-year-old male who was married and had completed a motorcycle training course. He also had a clean driving record. The policy itself included bodily injury protection $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident and $50,000 in property damage coverage. The deductibles for both Comprehensive and Collision coverage were $500.

The motorcycle used when gather quotes was a Harley Davidson Street Glide (1690cc) with no anti-theft device installed.
