1. Geico

Geico, the largest auto insurance company in Connecticut, controls over 17% of the state’s market. While Geico is mostly known for selling policies online or by phone, the company has three brick-and-mortar offices in the state that customers can visit. The agents’ offices are in Fairfield County, Hartford and New London. Given Connecticut’s small size, most prospective policyholders have an agent located within driving distance.

Our Thoughts: Drivers in Connecticut will find that Geico offers some of the lowest quotes in the state. The company also provides policyholders with access to great online tools and a robust mobile app. While its discounts aren’t the best, drivers are unlikely to miss them, given the company’s low baseline rates. Most drivers will find that Geico is one of the best auto insurance companies available.

2. Allstate

Allstate is the second largest insurer in Connecticut, and it employs a long roster of agents across the state. Allstate even has agents located in some of Connecticut’s smaller cities, like Branford. The company also offers boat insurance, which is convenient for boat owners who wish to bundle their policies through one company rather than deal with multiple insurers. An Allstate agent might be able to find you a discount for bundling policies.

Our Thoughts: If you value having just one point of contact at a company, Allstate is a great choice for your auto insurance needs. However, drivers who prioritize finding the cheapest auto insurance rates would fare better with a different company.

3. Liberty Mutual

Liberty Mutual opened its first office in Connecticut 100 years ago. Today, the company employs more than 500 people in the state and has representatives across 12 offices. Liberty Mutual offers discounts to members of college alumni groups, including graduates from the University of New Haven and Sacred Heart University. Furthermore, the company provides perks to teachers who are employed by a school or university in Connecticut.

Our Thoughts: Unless you’re a teacher in Connecticut, you’d be better off by selecting a different auto insurance company for your needs. Liberty Mutual offers auto insurance quotes that are substantially higher than the state mean. Furthermore, the company has substandard customer support, and many policyholders complain about their insurance claims taking a long time to be processed.

  • 2 out of 5 rating from J.D. Power for overall satisfaction

4. Progressive

Progressive is the fourth largest insurance company in Connecticut, but it does not offer many brick-and-mortar locations. If you want coverage through the company, you’ll have to purchase it online or by phone. However, in and around Hartford or New Haven, Progressive does operate service centers. The service centers are convenient, as customers who drive to one can get minor damage assessed, file a claim and even begin repairs all at one location.

Our Thoughts: While Progressive doesn’t offer drivers in Connecticut any exclusive discounts, it’s the best-priced auto insurance company in the state. Additionally, Progressive’s online quote system is fast and easy to use. Progressive is one of the top choices for auto insurance in Connecticut.

5. Travelers

Travelers is the fifth largest auto insurance company in Connecticut and one of the largest in the country. In addition to providing Connecticut residents with auto insurance coverage, the company also maintains an employee training facility in Windsor. Travelers offers retirees and employees of the state of Connecticut access to special discounts.

Our Thoughts: Travelers is best for drivers who would receive high rates from most insurance companies, like young drivers or anyone with an accident on their record. While Travelers doesn’t provide the most competitive auto insurance quotes, it does provide policyholders with a long list of discounts. These discounts can make its average-priced quotes a little better.

6. State Farm

State Farm isn’t as prevalent in Connecticut as in other states, but the company still represents 6% of the market within the state. State Farm offers drivers in Connecticut access to 13 discounts, including discounts for safe driving and for parents of teen drivers. The variety of discounts that State Farm offers means that a wide range of people will be able to benefit from them.

Our Thoughts: State Farm is a well-rounded insurance company offering low-priced quotes and a decent customer experience through its friendly agents. While other insurance companies offer coverage at a lower cost, often you’ll sacrifice the ability to have an in-person agent to speak with. Not with State Farm: It provides a great balance between affordable rates and great service.

7. Nationwide

Nationwide maintains a large presence in Connecticut. The company sells its policies through independent agents that are spread throughout the state. For instance, in Waterbury alone there are 57 agents that sell auto insurance through Nationwide. Anyone in Connecticut who purchases auto insurance coverage from Nationwide qualifies for up to 10 discounts.

Our Thoughts: Nationwide provides drivers in Connecticut with some of the lowest-priced auto quotes. In fact, most drivers will find that only Geico and Progressive offer comparable rates. While its list of discounts isn’t the most comprehensive, most drivers will receive affordable rates without having to use them. Nationwide is in the upper tier of insurance companies in Connecticut.

USAA’s corporate headquarters is located in San Antonio, Texas, but that hasn’t stopped the company from becoming one of the largest auto insurance companies in Connecticut. In fact, USAA is responsible for 4% of the auto insurance market in the state—a fact that is even more impressive when you consider USAA’s limited customer segment. To obtain auto coverage through USAA, you must either be a member of the U.S. military or a family member of someone who is.

Our Thoughts: If you qualify for coverage through USAA, it’s likely to be the best choice for your auto insurance. The company provides low rates compared to its competitors and offers unique perks that you won't find elsewhere. For instance, USAA provides a discount for parking your car within a military base.

  • 5 out of 5 rating from J.D. Power for overall satisfaction

9. Hartford Auto Insurance

Hartford has offered auto insurance policies in Connecticut since 1984, but it has sold other insurance products in the state for over 200 years. Drivers in Connecticut have access to a slew of benefits, such as a 12-month-rate-increase-protection perk and accident forgiveness. While accident forgiveness is fairly common, not many other companies offer a rate-lock feature.

Our Thoughts: Hartford’s customers and industry experts both rate the company as one of the best when it comes to overall satisfaction. However, the company doesn’t provide the longest list of discounts, and its rates are not particularly impressive. Therefore, Hartford is best for someone who is willing to pay a little more for better interactions with their insurance company.

  • A+ (Superior) A.M. Best Financial Strength Rating
  • 4 out of 5 rating from J.D. Power for overall satisfaction

10. Amica

Amica was established in 1907 and is the oldest mutual insurance company of automobiles in the country. Since it’s a mutual insurance company, Amica is owned by its customers. If it turns a profit, it’s able to return it to customers in the form of a dividend. Amica’s dividend payments can be used as policyholders see fit, which means that the payments don’t have to be applied to a policy’s premium.

Our Thoughts: Amica offers drivers in Connecticut low rates and consistently receives top notch reviews for customer support. Its strengths are enough to overcome its lack of discounts. Amica is one of the best auto insurance companies available to drivers in Connecticut.
