Lamborghinis are not only expensive to purchase, they're also costly to insure. The average cost of auto insurance for a 2018 Aventador S Coupe was $7,949 per year, according to our research. This is more than three times the cost of insurance for a 2018 Honda Civic EX.

Furthermore, Lamborghini owners may have to get a specialized insurance policy designed for collector vehicles, as standard auto insurance may not be an option. However, we found that collector auto insurance policies for a Lamborghini cost 44% less than standard auto insurance policies.

How to get Lamborghini car insurance

Insuring an exotic car—such as a Lamborghini—can be difficult, as some insurance companies simply do not offer coverage for these vehicles. Although some national insurers, such as State Farm and Farmers, provided us with online quotes for various Lamborghini models, most did not. If you aren't able to find coverage with a major insurer, a company that specializes in classic or collector car insurance may be your only option.

Collector car insurance for a Lamborghini

Collector car insurance is designed for vehicles like Lamborghinis, which are very expensive and may actually appreciate in value. The main difference between a collector car insurance policy and standard auto insurance is that the former operates on an agreed value, while the latter operates on the actual cash value of the vehicle.

For example, let's say you have a collector auto insurance policy for a Lamborghini Huracan with an agreed value of $200,000. Your insurer will—at most—pay out this amount to repair or replace your vehicle for a claim covered by comprehensive or collision insurance. This prevents any surprises in terms of coverage, which is especially important if you've spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on a Lamborghini.

When it comes to Lamborghini insurance, we found that collector car insurance is, on average, less expensive than standard car insurance policies.

Across the quotes we gathered, collector car insurance quotes provided by American Standard Insurance were 44% less expensive than those for conventional auto insurance policies—which were provided by Erie, State Farm and Farmers.

Why is Lamborghini auto insurance so expensive?

Insurance companies set rates based on the likelihood that the policyholder would file a claim and how much a claim could cost. High-performance vehicles such as Lamborghinis are more expensive to repair and replace as well as more likely to be in an accident than more common cars, so they represent a much bigger risk to an insurer. To accommodate these increased risks, car insurance companies will charge high rates for cars like Lamborghinis or choose not to insure them altogether.

Lamborghinis are a high investment for both drivers and insurers but there are several factors, including a clean driving history and low annual mileage, that can keep your insurance rates down.

Insurance for a Lamborghini will be especially expensive for drivers who are more likely to drive irresponsibly. If you are 17 to 19 years old—a demographic that is statistically likely to get into a wreck—we found the cost of insurance for a Lamborghini could be 121% higher than the rates quoted above for a 40-year-old male. Across the quotes we gathered, the rate for a 19-year-old male driver to insure a Lamborghini Aventador is $17,533 per year, about $9,600 more expensive than our adult driver profile.

How frequently you drive your Lamborghini will also impact your car insurance rates. One of the questions insurers typically ask is how much you plan to drive an insured vehicle in a year. The likelihood of an accident increases the more you drive your insured vehicle, so therefore your insurance company will charge higher rates. Exotic cars such as Lamborghinis aren't typically used daily, so driving only a few thousand miles per year can greatly reduce auto insurance costs.
