The cheapest renters insurance policy in Nevada costs $14 per month, but we don't recommend buying coverage based on price alone. Dependable service and good coverage options matter, too.

The good:

  • Affordable prices
  • Great customer service
  • Good coverage options

The bad:

  • Moderately high minimum coverages

State Farm is our recommendation for renters insurance for most people in Nevada because it has the best overall mix of affordability, customer service and coverage options.

State Farm has one of the best rates we found for renters insurance in Nevada: about $14 per month. That's $4 less than the typical price statewide, and only a few cents more than the cheapest option, Liberty Mutual.

We're also big fans of State Farm's reliable customer service. It has a Complaint Index of 0.38 from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. That means it received only 38% as many complaints as you'd expect given its size. J.D. Power also named it the best renters insurance company in the U.S., and it has an A++ Financial Strength Rating from A.M. Best.

State Farm's coverage options are good, but not perfect. It offers a few extra choices beyond the basics, like valuable-items coverage and extended liability; however, it's lacking others, such as replacement-cost coverage.

Finally, renters without much property who are looking for the absolute cheapest option may not want to go with State Farm. The smallest amount of personal property coverage it sells is $10,000, which may be more than students or young people need. If that's the case, look at our most affordable option, Liberty Mutual.

Best coverage options: Travelers

Travelers has the best range of choices for renters insurance coverage options.

The good:

  • Great coverage options
  • Good customer service

The bad:

  • Average rates
  • Must buy in annual installments

Renters who are looking to protect themselves with more than just basic renters insurance should look at Travelers. It had the best selection of optional coverages available and good customer service to boot; however, its prices are merely average.

Coverage options from Travelers include water backup, extended liability and equipment breakdown. These coverages aren't available at many other insurers.

Customer service at Travelers is generally well-rated. Its NAIC Complaint Index is 0.37, meaning it received only 37% as many complaints as a typical insurer. However, it was not as highly ranked as State Farm by J.D. Power.

Our least favorite aspect of Travelers Insurance is the fact that you have to pay your bill in annual installments. While the rates are about average among Nevada renters insurance companies when you average them out, you have to pay your bill for the whole year at once. That means writing one check for $216 instead of 12 checks for $18.

This system can also make the process of canceling your insurance more difficult. You can ask for a refund, but it's another hoop to jump through if you're unhappy with the service.

Most affordable: Liberty Mutual

Liberty Mutual is a little cheaper than our top pick.

The good:

  • Affordable rates
  • Low minimum coverage amounts

The bad:

  • Poor customer service
  • Limited coverage options

For renters looking for the lowest price possible for a renters insurance policy in Nevada, we recommend Liberty Mutual. It's even cheaper than our top pick for equivalent coverage, and renters without much property can save even more.

The typical price we found from Liberty Mutual was about $14 per month — approximately the same as our top pick, and 24% cheaper than the average statewide price overall.

However, Liberty Mutual's minimum coverage limits were lower than State Farm's. With Liberty Mutual, you can opt for coverage limits as low as $5,000, and doing so will bring your rates down even more (State Farm's minimum is $10,000).

We always suggest you buy enough coverage to pay for all your belongings, so you should only consider a limit this low if you don't need to insure much. The few dollars you save each month are not worth the risk of living with insufficient coverage.

Unfortunately, Liberty Mutual's customer service is not as well-reviewed as other insurers on this list. It has an NAIC Complaint Ratio of 0.70, meaning it receives 70% as many complaints as a typical insurer its size. While that's below the national median, it's unusually high compared to the other Nevada insurers we considered. J.D. Power also did not rank it as highly as either of our top two picks.

How we chose the best renters insurance companies in Nevada

To choose the best renters insurance in Nevada, we used three main criteria: affordability, coverage options and customer service.

  • Affordability: Does the company offer low rates for coverage?
  • Coverage options: Is there a wide range of optional coverages to choose from?
  • Customer service: Are customers generally happy with the service they receive?

Our selected levels of coverage were:

  • Liability coverage: $100,000
  • Medical payments coverage: $1,000
  • Deductible: $500

Coverage options: Comparing renters insurance policies and benefits

Every renter's coverage needs are different, and there's no single perfect set of options for every renter. With that in mind, we recommended renters insurance companies that offer a wide range of useful coverage options.

These include:

  • Replacement-cost coverage: Pays for the full cost to replace a damaged or stolen item, ignoring depreciation.
  • Valuable items: Increases protection for expensive items like jewelry, musical instruments or high-end electronics, which may have limited or no coverage under a typical policy.
  • Extended liability: Boosts your liability protection beyond typical levels, so you are well-protected if you are involved in a lawsuit.

Every renters insurance company we looked at also offered the following basic coverages. Companies that don't offer all of the following are not worth considering for renters insurance.

  • Personal property coverage: Pays to repair or replace property such as clothing, furniture or appliances that are damaged or stolen.
  • Additional living expenses: Pays for a hotel or other temporary lodging if your home is uninhabitable due to a covered peril.
  • Liability coverage: Pays for damage to others who you're responsible for, such as a guest injured by your dog.
  • Medical payments coverage: Pays for medical expenses resulting from accidents in your home, regardless of who is at fault. Pays out before liability coverage.

Customer service: Evaluating insurer quality in service and claims

Selecting a renters insurance company with good customer service can make a huge difference, especially when you're buying a policy or making a claim. Good customer service can make the process smooth and stress-free, while bad customer service can make everything take much longer than necessary.

To evaluate renters insurance customer service, we considered three main factors: the National Association of Insurance Commissioners' Complaint Index, J.D. Power's U.S. Home Insurance Study - Renters Insurance and A.M. Best's Financial Strength Rating.

NAIC Complaint Index
J.D. Power rating
A.M. Best FSR
Liberty Mutual0.7792A
State Farm0.38850A++
  • NAIC Complaint Index: This score compares the number of complaints a renters insurance company has received with its size. A lower score indicates fewer complaints, and the national median is 1.00.
  • J.D. Power rankings: This score is based on a national survey that asks how satisfied renters are with their renters insurance company. Scores are based out of 1,000, and the national average is 831.
  • A.M. Best Financial Strength Rating: This letter grade describes the overall financial health of a renters insurance company. Grades range from A++ (highest) to D (lowest), and a higher grade indicates a better ability to meet claims demand,
