There was a substantial difference in the average cost of motorcycle insurance between the five carriers. GEICO had the cheapest quotes for our sample policy, with an average annual rate of $137 in Wyoming. The average motorcycle insurance quote from Nationwide wasn’t much higher: $270 per year. Markel and Dairyland had quotes that were $331 and $443, respectively. The company with the most expensive motorcycle insurance quotes was Progressive. The insurer’s average motorcycle insurance policy for our sample rider and policy was $591 – more than 4x the cost of the best rates from GEICO.

A study by ValuePenguin of five major carriers that sell motorcycle insurance in Wyoming found GEICO had the cheapest quotes for a sample policy and rider.

Best Motorcycle Insurance Rates In Wyoming: By City

Wyoming is not like other states when it comes to motorcycle insurance. Typically, larger cities have much more expensive motorcycle rates. However, rates in Wyoming’s largest cities are only slightly more expensive than the state average. Quotes in Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie and Rock Springs were all just 2.5% higher than Wyoming’s average. The fourth largest city, Gillette, had the lowest motorcycle insurance rates among the five places; its average quote was 4.2% lower than the state average.

Cheyenne, WY

The capital of Wyoming is also the state’s most populous city, with more than 60,000 residents. It is located in the southeast corner of the state and is home to a long list of registered historical places. Many residents are employed by the government via the F.E. Warren Air Force Base or the Wyoming National Guard. Motorcycle insurance rates in Cheyenne were 2.5% higher than the state average.

Casper, WY

About 56,000 people call Casper home. It is the second largest city in Wyoming and known as “The Oil City” in the state for its long history with the resource. It is home to a number of museums and historical sites, including the Fort Caspar Museum and Historic Site. Quotes for our sample rider and motorcycle insurance policy in Casper were 2.5% higher than the state average.

Laramie, WY

Laramie is a city of more than 31,000 residents and was named one of the best cities to retire in by Money Magazine in 2011. It was a significant spot along the Union Pacific Railroad and is home to the University of Wyoming, Wyoming Technical Institute and a branch of Laramie County Community College. Motorcycle insurance rates there are relatively affordable. Quotes for our sample policy and rider were only 2.5% higher than the Wyoming average.

Gillette, WY

More than 31,000 residents live in Gillette, which is also known for its nearby natural resources. It is a major producer of coal and natural gas. Devils Tower National Monument, a popular tourist destination, is near Gillette. Motorcycle insurance rates in Gillette were 4.2% lower than the state average.

Rock Springs, WY

Rock Springs has more than 23,000 residents and is known for hosting an annual county fair called “Wyoming’s Big Show.” It also is within a resource-rich area of coal and oil. Motorcycle insurance rates in Rock Springs are close to the Wyoming average. Premiums quoted for our sample policy and rider were 2.5% higher than the state average.

The average motorcycle insurance quote in Wyoming for our sample policy and rider was $354 and the averages for each of the 36 places we gathered quotes from weren’t too much higher or lower. The place with the most expensive premiums was 7.1% higher than the cheapest. Keep in mind that just because you're getting cheap rates, doesn't mean you're getting the best coverage. When shopping for motorcycle insurance, you should get quotes from several insurers, including some of the best. This will allow you to compare policies as well as quotes.

Study Methodology

Our study analyzed motorcycle insurance quotes for a sample policy and rider across 36 municipalities and census-designated places in the state of Wyoming. The quotes we gathered were from five major carriers: GEICO, Nationwide, Progressive, Markel and Dairyland. The rider we gathered quotes from was a 45-year-old male who was married and had completed a motorcycle training course. He also had a clean driving record. The policy itself included bodily injury protection $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident and $50,000 in property damage coverage. The deductibles for both Comprehensive and Collision coverage were $500.

The motorcycle used when gather quotes was a Harley Davidson Street Glide (1690cc) with no anti-theft device installed.
