Only one other company ranked with low motorcycle insurance quotes compared to the Vermont average: Markel. In Vermont, three of the five companies we analyzed had rates higher than the Vermont average: Nationwide, Dairyland and Progressive, which quoted premiums of $409, $417 and $692, respectively. Chester, VT

One of the places with the most affordable motorcycle insurance rates is the historic town of Chester in Windsor County. Chester is home to more than 3,100 locals and dozens of village houses that proudly display their Victorian, Colonial Revival, and Federal style architecture. The town and tourist destination the most affordable motorcycle insurance rates in our study. Quotes for our sample policy were 5.1% lower than State average.

Swanton, VT

Swanton, a town in the Northwestern corner of the State bordering Lake Champlain and the Quebec Province in Canada, has about 2,000 residents. It is considered one of the most attractive communities in Vermont due to its vibrant commercial hub and backdrop of foliage. Motorcycle insurance rates 5% lower than Vermont’s average don’t hurt, either.

Shelburne, VT

Located along the shores of Lake Champlain, Shelburne is a 700-resident suburb of the largest city in Vermont. Dubbed as the wealthiest municipality in Chittenden County and the Burlington metropolitan area, Shelburne also makes it into our list of places where motorcycle insurance is reasonably priced. Premiums quoted there were 4.4% lower than the Vermont average, which placed Shelburne with the third cheapest motorcycle insurance rates in Vermont.

Barre City, VT

Barre is the largest city in Washington County and the tenth most populous municipality in Vermont, with about 9,000 residents. The self-proclaimed “Granite Center of the World,” Barre City boasts of a booming granite industry that supplies the world with the sought after “Barre Gray” rock, Motorcycle insurance rates in Barre were 3.8% lower than the state average.

Bristol, VT

In Northwestern Addison County, at the western foot of the Green Mountains, is Bristol – another town with some of the most affordable motorcycle insurance. Its community of more than 1,000 enjoys premiums that were 3.8% lower than Vermont’s average. Bristol’s signature event is the longest-running Outhouse Race and it’s known for its beauty during all four seasons.

The five places with the most expensive motorcycle insurance in Vermont were all located in the northern half of the state. Typically, the places with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates include and are nearby the largest cities, making the group of cities with the most expensive rates in Vermont unique. The place with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates was Waitsfield, where premiums quoted were 10.5% higher than the state average.

Waitsfield, VT

Waitsfield is comfortably nestled in the valley of the Mad River, west of the main range of the Green Mountains and east of the Northfield Mountains. The town’s economy is fueled by two popular ski resorts. Motorcycle insurance there was the least affordable in the state. Quotes for our sample policy were 10.5% higher than the Vermont average.

Newport, VT

The second smallest city by population in our list is Newport, which has 4,000 residents. The city is wrapped around the southern shore of the Lake Memphremagog, which has made Newport the official venue of Vermont’s annual ice fishing derby. Insurance rates in Newport were 9.3% higher than the state average.

Enosburg Falls, VT

Enosburg Falls is a village occupied by 1,322 townsfolk in North Vermont. It is located south of the Canadian border. It joins our list of places where motorcycle insurance is most expensive in Vermont with a 9.1% difference against the State’s average costs. Enosburg Falls’ biggest attraction is its Cold Hollow Sculpture Park that features a combination of art and history amidst nature.

Barton, VT

Barton is a village of 700 outside of the Willoughby State Forest. Rates there were 8.3% higher than the Vermont average. Barton, located in the Northeast of the state, is part of the Orleans County with two incorporated villages included. Every August, it is where the annual Orleans County Fair is held.

Northfield, VT

Northfield, a town in a valley within the Green Mountains and is the geographic center of Vermont. More than 2,600 people live here. While the town’s attraction is its historic lattice style and queen post bridges, its popularity comes from its Norwich University, the oldest private military college in the United States. In Northfield, motorcycle insurance rates were 5.1% higher than the state average for our sample rider.

Study Methodology

Our study analyzed motorcycle insurance quotes for a sample policy and rider across 34 municipalities and census-designated places in the state of Vermont. The quotes we gathered were from five major carriers: Progressive, Nationwide, GEICO, Markel and Dairyland. The rider we gathered quotes from was a 45-year-old male who was married and had completed a motorcycle training course. He also had a clean driving record. The policy itself included bodily injury protection $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident and $50,000 in property damage coverage. The deductibles for both Comprehensive and Collision coverage were $500.

The motorcycle used when gather quotes was a Harley Davidson Street Glide (1690cc) with no anti-theft device installed.
