To see what bike owners in the state pay for insurance, we gathered motorcycle insurance quotes from four major carriers for a 45-year-old male rider. Our study showed the most expensive place for the sample policy with $300,000 of bodily injury protection per accident was 18.2% higher than the cost of the cheapest in Maine.

Cheapest Motorcycle Insurance in Maine

We found the motorcycle insurance carrier with the best quotes in Maine for our sample policy and rider was GEICO. With an average quote of $228, GEICO's rates were more than 39% lower than the Maine average. GEICO cost nearly a third of the most expensive carrier, which illustrates that comparing quotes can get you lower rates from even the best motorcycle insurance companies.

ValuePenguin found the carrier with the best motorcycle insurance rates for a sample policy and rider in Maine was GEICO.

Nationwide also had some of the most affordable motorcycle insurance rates in Maine, with an average quote of $244 for our sample policy and rider. The only other company with available data that had motorcycle insurance rates below the state average was Dairyland, which had an average rate of $365. Motorcycle insurance rates by Progressive were $676 for our profiled bike owner, which was more than 78% higher than the state average.

The five places with the best motorcycle insurance rates in Maine were all small cities on or nearby the Atlantic coast. None of the cheapest places were in the northern third of the state. Belfast, ME

The place with the best motorcycle insurance rates in Maine is the city of Belfast in Waldo County. Located on the coast of Belfast Bay, the city has more than 6,700 residents and is a historic seaport. There are antique buildings and architecture in the area that are popular with tourists, as well as the natural scenery. Motorcycle insurance in Belfast is the most affordable, too. Quotes for our sample property were 7.3% lower than the Maine average.

Old Town, ME

The majority of Old Town, which is a city, is on Marsh Island between the Stillwater River and the Penobscot River. More than 7,800 residents call Old Town home and most live on the eastern side of the island. The Dewitt Field Old Town Airport also is on Marsh Island, just north of the city. Motorcycle insurance in Old Town was 5.6% lower than the state average, which ranks this city as Maine's second cheapest motorcycle rates.

Rockland, ME

The Knox County city of Rockland has more than 7,300 residents and is a popular vacation spot. It also is a departure point for boats to the islands of Vinalhaven, North Haven and Matinicus. The city grew rapidly in the 19th century due to shipbuilding and fishing, although its economy has moved away from dependency on those industries. Motorcycle insurance rates in Rockland were the third lowest in the state -- 5.6% lower than the Maine average.

Bangor, ME

Bangor is on the west bank of the Penobscot River and has a population of about 33,000 people. The city has its own international airport and is part of a metropolitan area with more than 153,000 residents. Lumber, shipping and manufacturing have long been the pillars of industry there and continue to be today. A number of major fires occurred in the 19th century that destroyed many buildings. Motorcycle insurance premiums in Bangor were 4% lower than the state average.

Westbrook, ME

Westbrook is a city adjacent to one of Maine’s largest cities, Portland. The suburb has almost 18,000 residents and has a growing downtown to compliment Portland’s. The rivers and surrounding outdoors are prime places for leisure activities and there is a budding art scene in the community. Westbrook has Maine's fifth lowest motorcycle insurance rates: costs for our sample rider were 4% cheaper than the Maine average.

Most Expensive Motorcycle Insurance in Maine

The five places with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates in Maine were some of the largest cities in the state, including Augusta. They also tended to be in the southern region of the state. The place with the most expensive premiums was Augusta, where motorcycle insurance rates were 9.6% higher than the state average.

Augusta, ME

The place with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates in Maine was Augusta, the state’s capital. It is far from the largest city in Maine, with only about 19,000 residents, but it has a rich colonial history and has had a military presence there for a long time -– the National Guard still operates out of the nearby airport. Motorcycle insurance rates in Augusta were 9.6% higher than the state average.

Lewiston, ME

Lewiston is home to Bates College and is located on the east bank of the Androscoggin River. It is the second-largest city in Maine with more than 36,000 residents and is home to the only basilica in Maine: the Saints Peter and Paul Basilica. Motorcycle insurance premiums in Lewiston were 8.3% higher than Maine’s average.

Sanford, ME

The city of Sanford has approximately 20,100 residents and is home to the Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport. It is on the Mousam River and includes the Village of Springvale. Motorcycle insurance rates in Sanford were some of the most expensive in the state. Quotes for our sample property were 6.7% higher than the average in our study.

Waterville, ME

Waterville is a city only 20 miles north of Augusta, the capital of Maine. Locals and visitors enjoy a thriving downtown in Waterville as well as outdoor pursuits along the Kennebec River, which the city is adjacent to. About 16,000 live in Waterville, which was the setting for the cult classic film “Wet Hot American Summer.” Motorcycle insurance rates in the city were 6.7% higher than the state mean based on our analysis.

South Portland, ME

South Portland has more than 25,000 residents and is known for its waterfront. It has always been a separate city from Portland, which is just across the Fore River. It started as a small residential community but has grown over centuries into a shipping hub. Motorcycle insurance rates in South Portland were 4.3% lower than the state average.

Study Methodology

Our study analyzed motorcycle insurance quotes for a sample policy and rider across 23 municipalities and census-designated places in the state of Maine. The quotes we gathered were from four major carriers: Progressive, Nationwide, GEICO and Dairyland. The rider we gathered quotes from was a 45-year-old male who was married and had completed a motorcycle training course. He also had a clean driving record. The policy itself included bodily injury protection $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident and $50,000 in property damage coverage. The deductibles for both Comprehensive and Collision coverage were $500.

The motorcycle used when gather quotes was a Harley Davidson Street Glide (1690cc) with no anti-theft device installed.
