The good:

  • The lowest price we found among Maine insurers.
  • Some of the best customer service in the state.

The bad:

  • A smaller list of coverages.
  • Fewer discounts than some competitors.

Nationwide is the top choice for most Maine riders because of its combination of low rates and strong customer service. The company has Maine's lowest annual premiums and the lowest rate of complaints among companies we analyzed.

On average, a full-coverage policy from Nationwide costs $338 per year. That's 30% lower than the state average and 2% less than the second-best rate offered by Progressive.

Nationwide riders can potentially reduce those rates even further with a wide range of discounts. Policyholders can save if they have multiple policies, take a safety course or switch from another company.

Although Nationwide does not have the broadest set of coverage options, customers can get roadside assistance, coverage for custom equipment and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts coverage

Nationwide has a lower rate of complaints than most companies, and the lowest National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) score in Maine. The company gets less than half the complaints expected for a company its size. Nationwide also received an A+ rating from AM Best, meaning it is on strong, stable financial footing.

Best coverage options: Progressive

Progressive pairs some of the most wide-ranging coverage we found with some of Maine's lowest rates.

The good:

  • A wide range of coverages.
  • Some of the lowest rates in Maine.

The bad:

  • A weak customer service reputation.
  • No trip interruption or trailer coverage.

Progressive offers among the best packages of coverage options among companies we looked at, and it is still quite affordable. It boasts several standard protections other insurers don't, plus a nice set of discounts.

Customers going with Progressive automatically get full replacement cost coverage, OEM parts and $3,000 in coverage for accessories and custom parts. Those are features other insurers often charge more for.

Riders can also get discounts for things like being a responsible driver, Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) membership and bundling policies. The company also reduces your deductible by 25% for each accident-free year.

For this coverage, Progressive charges some of the lowest rates we found. The company's average price in Maine was only $7 more per year than Nationwide, the cheapest option.

One issue with Progressive is a poor customer service rating, despite an A+ from AM Best. However, the company has a NAIC Complaint Index rating of 2.77, meaning it receives more than double the complaints expected for its size.

Best for daily riders: Dairyland

If you use your motorcycle as a primary means of transportation, Dairyland offers several useful features that can keep you on the road.

The good:

  • Has options for total loss replacement and OEM parts.
  • Can include rental reimbursement and roadside assistance.

The bad:

  • Poor customer service ratings.
  • Higher-than-average rates.

If your bike is your primary mode of transportation, we suggest looking into Dairyland as a good option to fit your needs. It has a pair of features that together offer a particular sort of protection if your bike is disabled or in an accident.

Roadside assistance offers service for events such as battery issues, a flat tire or mechanical problems, as well as 24/7 towing. Rental reimbursement allows you to rent a vehicle for up to 30 days while your motorcycle is being repaired.

If you don't have another vehicle for daily use, this combination could be extremely helpful in terms of keeping you on the road.

However, Dairyland does not offer the best customer service, nor is it the cheapest option in Maine. The company receives 169% more complaints than would be expected given its size, according to the NAIC.

Additionally, rates for Dairyland in Maine are 34% higher than the state average, $653 per year. Only Allstate charges more.

Best-rated Maine motorcycle insurers

After an accident or if you need to make a claim, your company's customer service plays an important role in resolving the situation. Among Maine's top insurers, Nationwide is the best rated, boasting a strong reputation, drawing fewer complaints and maintaining a strong financial footing.

NAIC Complaint Index
AM Best rating

Another company to look at is State Farm, which is also rated highly for customer service. Just know that riders looking for a quote must reach out to an agent because the company doesn't offer online motorcycle quotes.

Quality customer service is vital to your experience with a motorcycle insurance company. It should be factored into your purchase decision. Two important ways we measure a company's service are the AM Best Financial Strength Rating and the Complaint Index issued by the NAIC.

Companies with better AM Best ratings have strong financial backing, meaning they are in a better position to pay out claims even in difficult economic times. The NAIC Complaint Index compares companies' share of the overall market to its share of the total complaints. The average score is 1.00 and lower numbers indicate better performance.

The NAIC combines car and motorcycle insurance into a single industry category. This means scores are based on each company's combined policies for motorcycles and cars.

Maine motorcycle insurance requirements

In Maine, anyone operating a vehicle, including a motorcycle, must have a minimum amount of insurance coverage to drive legally. Maine has higher minimum requirements for motorcycle insurance than most other states.

Bodily injury liability$50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident
Property damage liability$25,000
Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM)$50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident
Medical Payments$2,000 per person

Although you are only required to have those minimum coverages, we suggest that most riders get more. The minimum limits will not protect your bike itself, and medical bills are often higher than liability limits, potentially leaving you to pay the difference.

We collected motorcycle insurance quotes from five of the largest passenger vehicle insurers in Maine. The sample rider is a 45-year-old man who owns and rides a 2021 Harley-Davidson Street Glide. The coverage limits used, which surpass the state minimums, were:

  • Bodily injury liability coverage: $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident
  • Property damage liability coverage: $50,000 per accident
  • Collision coverage: Included/$500 deductible
  • Comprehensive coverage: Included/$500 deductible
  • All other coverages: Not included unless legally required
