Illinois is home to Chicago, the nation’s third largest city, but also is known for its agricultural productivity. It also experiences all four seasons and is a popular place to own a motorcycle. We gathered motorcycle insurance quotes from five major carriers for a 45-year-old male rider to evaluate how the most affordable insurers in Illinois. The policy quoted included bodily injury protection of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident and $50,000 in property damage coverage. Our study showed that the most expensive carrier for the sample policy was more than 3.4x as the cost of the cheapest in Illinois.

Cheapest Motorcycle Insurance In Illinois

Our study of motorcycle insurance rates for a sample policy and rider showed Nationwide had the best quotes in Illinois. The company's average premium quoted was $276 for our profiled rider -- well below the average from the other major carriers in our study. GEICO ranked with the second lowest motorcycle insurance quotes at $479. Rates quoted by Progressive and Dairyland were $586 and $619, respectively. The company with by far the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates was Esurance. The Allstate company's average quote for our 45 year old rider was $930. That's more than 3x the cost of Nationwide's average quote in Illinois.

A study by ValuePenguin found Nationwide had the best motorcycle insurance rates in Illinois for a sample rider and policy.

Best Motorcycle Insurance Rates In Illinois: By City

The five places in Illinois with the cheapest motorcycle insurance rates located all over the state. They tend to be smaller cities and scattered across the middle of the state, except for Waukegan. The place with the most affordable premiums in Illinois is Macomb, where rates were 19% lower than the state average.

Macomb, IL

The city with the best motorcycle insurance rates in Illinois, out of 229 locations surveyed, is Macomb. It has more than 21,000 residents, was founded in the early 19th century and is home to Western Illinois University. Part of the city’s quaint downtown is being considered for a historic district designation, according to the city’s website. Residents also will be happy to learn they have the lowest motorcycle insurance rates in Illinois. Premiums in Macomb were 19% lower than the state average.

Watseka, IL

In northeast Illinois is Watseka - a city of about 5,250 residents that was founded in the mid-19th century. Although small, a number of notable individuals are from the town, including some professional baseball players. In 2007, Lakeview Park was built and the walking trails and fishing pier are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Watseka also has cheap motorcycle insurance rates. Quotes for motorcycle insurance policies were 18.9% lower than the state average, placing the city in the second spot on our list.

Toulon, IL

Toulon is northwest of Peoria, near Rock Island Trail State Park. It has roughly 1,300 residents and was named after an existing town in Tennessee. Abraham Lincoln visited the farming community during his 1858 senate race. Today, it is still a quiet city in Stark County and residents have affordable motorcycle insurance rates. Quotes for policies in Toulon were 17.5% lower than the state average.

Waukegan, IL

Just north of Chicago is the city of Waukegan. It has more than 88,000 residents and is undergoing a major redevelopment of its downtown and waterfront. The city has an active arts council, a symphony orchestra and has been a location for a number of films. Waukegan motorcycle insurance rates are some of the best in Illinois. Our study found premiums were 17.4% lower than the state average.

Charleston, IL

With a population of more than 22,000 residents, Charleston is one of the largest cities in eastern Illinois. Eastern Illinois University is located in the city, which employs many residents, but Charleston also has proved to be a favorable place for industry and manufacturing since the establishment of an enterprise zone. The first Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwich Shop was in the city and residents have the fifth cheapest motorcycle insurance rates in IL. Premiums in Charleston, Illinois are 17.2% lower than the state average.

Most Expensive Motorcycle Insurance In Illinois

Perhaps not surprisingly, the five places in Illinois where motorcycle insurance policies are the most expensive include Chicago and surrounding areas. Expensive insurance coverage, across multiple types of insurance, are commonly clustered around larger metropolitan areas. In Illinois, the city of Chicago had the highest rates in the state.

Chicago, IL

The place with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates in Illinois was Chicago, the state’s largest city and the third-largest city in the U.S. Located on the shore of Lake Michigan, Chicago has more than 2.7 million residents and is served by O’Hare International Airport, one of the busiest in the world. The Windy City is a major hub for finance, the arts and other industries, but motorcycle insurance premiums there are the highest in the state. Rates are 87.8% higher than the state average.

Cicero, IL

Cicero is an incorporated town and suburb of Chicago named after the Roman statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero. More than 84,000 residents call the town home and it has frequently been a stop on political campaigns throughout history. The speedway there closed but Cicero is still home to the Hawthorne Racecourse, which is a horse racetrack. Residents have some of the least affordable motorcycle insurance rates in Illinois - rates for our sample policy also were 87.8% higher than the state average.

Norridge, IL

The Village of Norridge has about 15,000 residents and is just east of O’Hare International Airport. In the early 20th century, it was home to mostly farms and a number of stables for riding horses which people took to the nearby Forest Preserves. Today, it is mostly residential and has some of the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates in the state of Illinois. Premiums quoted in our study were 75.4% higher than the state average.

Elmwood Park, IL

Elmwood Park is another suburb of Chicago. The Cook County village has roughly 25,000 residents who enjoy a central park, a local library and the close proximity to Chicago. Motorcycle insurance rates in Elmwood rank as the fourth most expensive in the state. Our study found premiums were 72.1% higher than that the Illinois average.

Stickney, IL

Just north of Chicago Midway International Airport is the Village of Stickney. It has more than 6,700 residents and the largest water treatment plant in the world, the Stickney Water Reclamation Plant. Along with the others in the top five, the village has some of the most expensive motorcycle insurance policies in Illinois. Rates for our sample policy were 55.2% higher than the state average.

Methodology

Our study analyzed motorcycle insurance quotes for a sample policy and rider across 229 municipalities and census-designated places in the state of Illinois. The quotes we gathered were from five major carriers - Progressive, Nationwide, GEICO, esurance and Dairyland. The rider we gathered quotes from was a 45-year-old male who was married and had completed a motorcycle training course. He also had a clean driving record. The policy itself included bodily injury protection $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident and $50,000 in property damage coverage. The deductibles for both Comprehensive and Collision coverage were $500.

The motorcycle used when gather quotes was a Harley Davidson Street Glide (1690cc) with no anti-theft device installed.
