1. State Farm

State Farm, the largest auto insurance company in Ohio, represents 20% of the industry's market share within the state. The company employs a long roster of agents across dozens of cities in Ohio, including 34 agents in Columbus and 58 agents in Cincinnati. Those agents help prospective policyholders search for available discounts, like the Student Away at School discount, which provides savings to anyone who has a student on their policy who lives more than 100 miles from home. In order to be eligible for the discount, the student must only occasionally use the insured vehicle while temporarily at home.

Our Thoughts: While State Farm doesn't provide the cheapest auto insurance rates in Ohio, its quotes are competitive. State Farm's main strength lies in the personalized service its agents can provide. If you have a lot of questions about car insurance or simply enjoy having a single point of contact at a company, State Farm is a solid option.

2. Progressive

Progressive has two main campuses that serve as the company's headquarters, located in Cleveland and Mayfield Village. Given the location of Progressive's headquarters, it makes sense that the company is the second-largest auto insurance company in Ohio. If you live in one of Ohio's large cities, like Cleveland, Columbus or Cincinnati, Progressive has auto service centers located near you. The service centers are highly convenient one-stop shops for damage assessment, claims and repairs.

Our Thoughts: Drivers in Ohio will find that Progressive offers some of the lowest auto insurance quotes, which you can find quickly using its online tool. In return for its affordable rates, you'll have to be willing to put up with long turnaround times for claims. If you're OK with that trade-off, Progressive is a great choice for your auto insurance coverage.

3. Allstate

Much like State Farm, Allstate has dozens of offices and hundreds of agents spread across the Buckeye State. The company prides itself on its network of friendly agents who not only sell insurance coverage but can also provide customer support. Allstate even provides its policyholders with access to individual agent webpages that detail their experience, contact information and interests.

Our Thoughts: If you're interested in coverage through Allstate simply because of its network of agents and the personalized service they provide, consider comparing quotes with State Farm. Both companies pride themselves on their friendly customer service, but Allstate doesn't provide the best discounts or the cheapest auto insurance, making it difficult to recommend over other companies.

4. Nationwide

Nationwide's corporate headquarters is located in Columbus, Ohio. Nationwide has many partnerships across the state and grants discounts to members of certain groups. For instance, members of the Ohio State University Alumni Association are eligible for exclusive auto insurance discounts. Even if you're not a member of a certain organization, you can still benefit from discounts like SmartRide, which offers qualified policyholders a discount of up to 40%.

Our Thoughts: Nationwide is one of the best insurance companies in Ohio, thanks to its long list of discounts and competitively priced auto insurance rates.

For the most part, GEICO functions as a direct-to-consumer insurance company, meaning that most drivers have to purchase policies online or over the phone. However, Ohio residents who live in or near Cincinnati, Cleveland or Columbus can speak to an in-person agent located in those areas. This is a great benefit as it's an option that most of GEICO's customers don't have.

Our Thoughts: Drivers in Ohio get the best of both worlds when they're insured with GEICO: They receive its ultra competitive auto insurance rates as well as access to in-person support. However, if you don't live in one of the aforementioned areas and you value having an agent nearby, consider comparing GEICO's quotes with State Farm's quotes. Overall, GEICO is one of the top auto insurance companies available in Ohio.

6. Grange Insurance

Grange Insurance is a regional insurance company that offers coverage in 13 states, including Ohio. The company was initially formed to provide insurance coverage to members of the National Grange Patrons of the Husbandry, a community organization with a focus on agriculture. It wasn't until 1958 that Grange Insurance began offering coverage to those who weren't members of the organization. Since then, Grange Insurance has gone on to become the sixth largest auto insurance provider in the state of Ohio.

Our Thoughts: Grange Insurance suffers from a common problem among auto insurers: It gets poor customer service reviews and has a lot of complaints about long wait times after filing a claim. While Grange Insurance might provide some drivers with affordable auto insurance quotes, there are many other insurance companies in Ohio that offer better customer service.

7. Liberty Mutual

Fairfield, Ohio, is home to one of Liberty Mutual's regional offices. Despite its large presence in the state, Liberty Mutual doesn't offer drivers in Ohio any unique perks or drivers. However, the company does play an active role in the communities where it sells insurance policies. For instance, Liberty Mutual's employees in the Mayfield Heights office participate in the local Firemark Award program.

Our Thoughts: Liberty Mutual's main drawback is that it doesn't provide strong discounts or features to offset its average auto insurance rates. If you select Liberty Mutual as your insurance company, you'll likely be subject to rate increases and untimely follow-ups from its employees. Other insurance companies in Ohio may give you better rates and customer service.

8. Erie

Erie is the eighth-largest auto insurer in Ohio and has offices in Canton and Columbus. The company has provided auto insurance coverage in Ohio since 1968. One of the company's best features is the Erie Rate Lock, an optional add-on that guarantees the company won't increase your rates if you file a claim. It's a great feature that shields customers from rate hikes that have plagued many drivers.

Our Thoughts: Erie is one of the top insurance companies in Ohio due to its low quotes and excellent customer support team. It's often difficult to find an insurance company that performs strongly across both categories. Not only is Erie one of the cheapest insurance companies in the state, but it ranks as one of the best auto insurance companies across the country.

9. American Family

American Family was founded in 1927 and offers auto insurance directly as well as through many subsidiaries, including American Family Insurance Company of Ohio and American Standard Insurance Company of Ohio. Its policies are sold through independent agents, however, customers can also receive quotes online. In Cleveland alone, the company's policies are offered by 15 separate agents.

Our Thoughts: None of American Family's offerings are particularly strong. Whether you're searching for the cheapest auto insurance quotes, the best discounts or the most coverage options, there are other companies that would be better suited to your needs.

10. USAA

USAA is the 10th-largest insurance company in Ohio despite only serving a specific customer segment. To obtain coverage from USAA, you must be a member of the U.S. military or a family member of one. Ohio is home to one of the largest bases in the country, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, meaning there's a large number of military personnel in Ohio who qualify for coverage through USAA.

Our Thoughts: USAA's focus on a specific customer segment allows it to differentiate its products through unique perks. The company is aware of the unique situations facing many U.S. military members and their families, so the company can tailor policies to address these needs. For instance, USAA offers a 15% discount to drivers who store their vehicles on a military base. USAA's unique discounts are a testament to how great USAA is for drivers who qualify for coverage.
