Car insurance requirements
Michigan is a no-fault state, which means personal injury protection (PIP) is apart of the minimum car insurance requirements. For Michigan drivers, PIP is limitless, a stark contrast to other states where there is a limit on how much PIP you may have. Drivers are also required to hold personal property insurance (PPI). Below we list all the requirements for car insurance in Michigan.
Type of Coverage | Limits |
---|---|
Bodily Injury Liability (BI) | $20,000 per person/ $40,000 per accident |
Property Damage Liability (PD) | $10,000 per accident |
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) | Unlimited |
Property Protection Insurance (PPI) | Up to $1 million |
Personal injury protection
Since personal injury protection is unlimited in Michigan, your medical bills can be in the millions and they will still be covered. The economic loss benefit of PIP means any wages you lose due to a disability from the accident will be covered for three years up to a certain amount.
To help residents pay for the usually hefty premium, you can coordinate your health insurance plan with your PIP. Your health insurance covers your injures while PIP will continue to pay for lost wages in the event of a disability. Note though, if you have Medicare or Medicaid, you will not be able to coordinate the two.
