Who Has The Cheapest Motorcycle Insurance Quotes In Wisconsin?

Wisconsin has a diverse geography and, although its winters can be harsh, the weather is great for motorcycles most of the year. To see who had the lowest motorcycle insurance rates in “America’s Dairyland,” we got quotes from major carriers for a 45-year-old male rider with good liability limits. Our study showed the most expensive place for the sample policy was 3.4x higher than the cost of the cheapest in Wisconsin.

Cheapest Motorcycle Insurance In Wisconsin

Quotes from four major insurance companies in Wisconsin for our sample policy and rider showed a wide variation in the average cost of motorcycle insurance. GEICO and Nationwide ranked as the two least expensive motorcycle insurance companies, with low rates of $238 and $351, respectively.

ValuePenguin gathered motorcycle insurance quotes for a sample rider from four major carriers and found GEICO had the best rates.

The other two companies we gathered data for, Progressive and Dairyland, had rates that were well above the average for our sample policy and rider in Wisconsin. Progressive's quote was $597 and Dairyalnd's was $800. Premiums quoted by cheapest company were far less than those of the most expensive, as the data shows. The five places in Wisconsin with the cheapest motorcycle insurance premiums are scattered around the state, but none are near any of the large metropolitan areas, such as Milwaukee. The city with the cheapest motorcycle insurance quotes was Ashland, where premiums were 16.3% lower than the state average.

Ashland, WI

The place with the best motorcycle insurance in Wisconsin is Ashland, a city of about 8,200 residents in the northern part of the state. Native Americans inhabited the area before European settlers arrived in the late 17th century. Shipping was once a prominent part of the local economy and the Ashland Ore Dock, a enormous dock designed for the transport of iron ore, lasted nearly 100 years before it was demolished. Ashland and the surrounding rural areas are great for bikes and the city has the cheapest motorcycle insurance rates in the state. Quotes for our sample policy were 16.3% lower than the state average.

Manitowoc, WI

The city of Manitowoc has more than 33,000 residents and is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan. The Manitowoc River flows through the city into the lake and is home to a daily newspaper and part of the Green Bay television market. Motorcycle insurance rates there are some of the best in Wisconsin. Quotes for the sample policy were 14.9% lower than the state average. 

Baraboo, WI

With more than 12,000 residents, Baraboo was once the home of the Ringling Brothers circus in the late 19th and early 20th century. It also was the headquarters of Cirrus Aircraft, which is known for its single-engine VK-30 kit planes, until 1994. Baraboo motorcycle insurance premiums are some of the lowest in the state. Rates there were 14.7% lower than the state average.

La Crosse, WI

Located on the Mississippi River in western Wisconsin, La Crosse is home to more than 52,000 residents but is part of a statistical area with more than 135,000. University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Viterbo University and Western Technical College are all located in the city, which has been recognized as a great place to live by a number of publications over the years. Motorcycle insurance rates were also 14.7% lower that the Wisconsin average in La Crosse.

Fond du Lac, WI

“Fondy” or, more formally, Fond du Lac got its name because it is located at the south shore of Lake Winnebago - hence the French-derived name meaning “Bottom of the Lake.” It has about 42,000 residents and a number of historical place in and around its downtown. Every year the city hosts a popular fishing tournament over Walleye Weekend. Fond du Lac also has cheap motorcycle insurance rates. Quotes for the sample policy were 14.5% lower than the state average.

The five cities in Wisconsin with the least affordable motorcycle insurance rates include and are located nearby the state’s largest city, Milwaukee. The city with the most expensive premiums was Wauwatosa, where rates were 34.9% higher than the state average.

Wauwatosa, WI

The Wisconsin city with the most expensive motorcycle insurance policies is Wauwatosa. The city has more than 46,000 residents and is along the Menomonee River. In the 1950s, Harley-Davidson and Briggs & Stratton built large manufacturing plants nearby and since then, the city can become an edge city for Milwaukee. It is home to many retail businesses and is just north of the Milwaukee County Zoo. Motorcycle insurance rates in Wauwatosa were 34.9% higher than the state average.

West Allis, WI

West Allis is another edge city to Wisconsin’s largest, Milwaukee. It has more than 60,000 residents and annually hosts the Wisconsin State Fair. It’s also the home to the Pettit National Ice Center and some of the least affordable motorcycle insurance premiums in the state. Rates for our sample policy were 25.6% higher than the state average.

Milwaukee, WI

It isn’t Wisconsin’s capital, but Milwaukee is the state’s most populous city, with about 600,000 residents. It’s the core of a metropolitan area with more than two million people and has been a center for business since fur traders entered the area in the early 19th century. Today, visitors and locals alike enjoy the waterfront of Lake Michigan, it’s history and tradition as a home to breweries and watersports. One of the city’s only drawbacks are its motorcycle insurance rates. Our sample policy quotes were 24% higher than the state average. 

Racine, WI

About 25 miles south of Milwaukee is Racine, a city of about 80,000 that is almost exactly between Wisconsin’s largest city and Chicago, Illinois. Among other things, Racine is known as the place where Malted milk balls were developed and for its downtown and marina. It also has expensive motorcycle insurance. Premiums quoted in Racine were 17.2% higher than the state average. 

South Milwaukee, WI

South Milwaukee is a city south of Wisconsin's largest city and almost adjacent to General Mitchell International Airport, which services both cities. It’s on the shore of Lake Michigan and was once the headquarters of Bucyrus International, which was known for constructing large shovels and dragline excavators, including Big Muskie, the world's largest mobile earth-moving machine. The company has since been purchased by Caterpillar. South Milwaukee has some of the most expensive motorcycle insurance in the state. Rates for the sample bike policy were 14.6% higher than the state average. 

Average Motorcycle Insurance Rates In Wisconsin: By City

This comparative study of motorcycle insurance premiums in Wisconsin was done by gathering and analyzing quotes from five major carriers across 71 municipalities and census-designated places. Our analysis showed premiums quoted for the most expensive place were 61.2% more than the cheapest.

Study Methodology

Our study analyzed motorcycle insurance quotes for a sample policy and rider across 71 municipalities and census-designated places in the state of Wisconsin. The quotes we gathered were from four major carriers - Progressive, Nationwide, GEICO and Dairyland. The rider we gathered quotes from was a 45-year-old male who was married and had completed a motorcycle training course. He also had a clean driving record. The policy itself included bodily injury protection $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident and $50,000 in property damage coverage. The deductibles for both Comprehensive and Collision coverage were $500.

The motorcycle used when gather quotes was a Harley Davidson Street Glide (1690cc) with no anti-theft device installed.
