2015 Safest Places in Louisiana

When deciding where to live, safety is a top priority. Our team at ValuePenguin has analyzed the most recent FBI Crime Report to determine the safety of cities in Louisiana. These 51 ranged in crime score from 580 to 5,366, with an average of 2,243. Each of the five safest cities and towns are south of Baton Rouge. The state’s capital fell near the bottom of our rankings despite the fact that we adjusted our crime score metric for population size. The score also took into account both the amount of violent and property-related crimes per 100,000 people (more on our methodology below). For more insight, take a look at the report:

5 Safest Places in Louisiana

These cities have an average crime score of 719, 68 percent lower than their typical peer in Louisiana. With some of the state’s lowest total violent crime rates, these five are the safest places in the state.

1. Patterson, La.

With a crime score that is 74% lower than the state's average, Patterson is the safest city in Louisiana. Its police department, which employs the motto "together for a safer community," has its very own "Most Wanted" page. Aside from safety, the city is also known for its high school football team, which produced former New Orleans Saints running back Dalton Hilliard and his sons, Ike and Kenny, who also made it into the NFL.

2. Harahan, La.

The only other place in our study to register a sub-600 crime score, Harahan reported the fewest violent crimes (161) per 100,000 people among the five safest cities. Its police department has a training center where it offers self-defense instruction for women, plus hosts a "Citizen's Police Academy." The residents here are, on average, a decade older (46.5) than their average peers in Louisiana.

3. Jeanerette, La.

Also known as "Sugar City" for its 200-year history of producing it, Jeanerette is the least populous city among the top five. Residents here earned an estimated household income of $30,146, or 32% percent less than Louisiana's average. Still, locals call it "the sweetest place in Louisiana." Thanks to a 25-member police department, it's also amongst the safest.

4. Mandeville, La.s

A 45-minute drive north of the No. 2 city (over the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, the world's longest bridge), Mandeville is the most populous city among the top five. The estimated median home value here in 2012 was $238,925, or 70% more than the state's average. The mayor boasts an operating budget of $15 million and a capital budget of $40 million.

5. St. Gabriel, La.

On the Mississippi River and just a 30-minute drive south of Baton Rouge, St. Gabriel reported the fewest property crimes (1,120) in the state. Incorporated in 1994 and gaining "city" status in 2001, St. Gabriel recorded a crime score that is 63% lower than the state's average. This, of course, doesn't account for those who live in the two prisons that are within the city limits.

Population Breakdown

Although we adjusted for population in our crime rankings, it is still difficult to compare a small town to a large city. To account for this fact, we separated the safest cities into three categories: towns with populations between 5,000 and 10,000, midsize cities with populations between 10,000 and 20,000, and larger cities with populations greater than 20,000. Here are our findings:

Methodology

To rank these places, we collected data from the 2013 FBI crime statistics by city, which provides the most recent crime data available. Not every town participates in this report and we also excluded towns with fewer than 3,000 residents because towns with small populations are more sensitive to crime score fluctuations for fewer crimes committed. The raw data report included property crimes (burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson), and violent crimes (murder/manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) from all law enforcement agencies that chose to partake in the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting program.

We standardized the data to reflect violent and property crimes per 100,000, to account for population. Then, we aggregated a “crime score” by weighting violent crime at 90% and property crime at 10%. Though property crime is more prevalent, we figured that violent crime is more concerning to town residents. Then we adjusted the crime score for population size, giving more slack to larger cities. Finally, we ranked the cities based on their crime scores.

Here is an alphabetical table of all cities included with their ranks, making it easier to compare different cities. See where your city lies!
