2015 Safest Places in Texas Study

How do the many cities of the Lone Star State fare in terms of safety? Our team has taken the most recent FBI Crime Report to determine how safe Texas cities are relative to each other. The 210 cities ranged in score from 175 to nearly 4,400. Generally, the larger cities ranked worse than cities with fewer residents, after accounting for population. The state capital ranked in the bottom 20 and Houston came in last. Take a look at the report for more insights:

The Top 5 Safest Places in Texas

Most of our top five cities are located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The average adjusted crime score for our top five places was 237.07, 83% more favorable than the typical town in Texas according to our methodology. Most of the cities had populations less than 20,000, with the notable exception being Colleyville, which has approximately 25,000 residents.

1. Murphy, TX

Located in northeastern Texas, Murphy takes our top spot with an adjusted crime score of 175.04. Its extremely low rate of violent crime—21 per 100,000 people—earns it the first spot on our list. Murphy is far and away our first place town, beating out second place by about 55 points.

  • Adjusted Crime Score: 175.04
  • Population: 19,347

2. Colleyville, TX

Colleyville takes second place with a crime score that beats the typical Texas town by around 84%. The Fort Worth suburb boasts an award-winning school system, high property values and high median incomes. Residents will be happy to note that the Colleyville precinct only reported 9 violent crimes in 2013, low compared to the population.

  • Adjusted Crime Score: 230.20
  • Population: 24,289

3. Highland Village, TX

This Dallas suburb comes in third. Residents of Highland Village boast proximity to Lewisville Lake. The town experienced a population boom after the Dallas / Fort Worth International Airport was built nearby. Highland Village’s relatively low rate of violent and property crime contribute to its adjusted crime score of 245.12.

  • Adjusted Crime Score: 245.12
  • Population: 15,754

4. Hutto, TX

Hutto Hippos rejoice! The town takes our fourth spot with a crime score of 259.45, behind Highland Village by 12 points. Though Hutto has a lower violent crime rate per capita than Highland Village does, its slightly higher rate of property crime knocks it down to fourth. Nevertheless, Hutto has a crime score that beats the state mean by 82%.

  • Adjusted Crime Score: 259.45
  • Population: 19,513

5. Memorial Villages, TX*

The six villages that comprise the Memorial Villages precinct round off our list with an adjusted crime score of 275.53. The area is known for its many trees and quiet county roads. The city has very little violent crime, but a relatively larger rate of property crime, which gives it its rank.

  • Adjusted Crime Score: 275.53
  • Population: 11,660

*Some of the towns comprising the Memorial area of Houston fall within the “Memorial Villages” precinct and report this way to the FBI. According to the department website, the individual towns included in this precinct are Bunker Hill Village, Hunters Creek Village, and Piney Point Village.

Texas's Safest Places by Population

Though we adjusted for population in our crime rankings, cities with larger populations tend to have more crime. To account for this fact, we broke out the cities into three buckets: towns with populations smaller than 20,000, midsize towns and cities with populations between 20,000 and 50,000, and larger towns and cities with populations greater than 50,000. Have a look at our findings:

Featured Small Town or City (<20,000) - Royse City

Royse City takes fifth in our small cities category and ranks seventh out of 210 towns and cities overall. The town has an exceptionally low rate of violent crime and relatively little property crime, which gives it its favorable ranking.

  • Adjusted Crime Score: 306.40
  • Population: 10,132

Featured Midsized Town or City (20,000-50,000) - Friendswood

The City of Friendswood is our second safest midsized city and eighth-safest city overall. Friendswood residents enjoy a bustling business-district as well as abundant natural beauty, including parks, natural trails, and lush landscaping. Friendswood has very little violent crime—only 11 were reported in a city with a population just shy of 40,000. It’s slightly higher incidence of property crime knocks it to our 8th spot overall.

  • Adjusted Crime Score: 317.40
  • Population: 37,226

Featured Large Town or City (>50,000) - Flower Mound

The affluent suburb of Dallas ranks at the top of our list of cities with more than 50,000 residents. Generally, cities with larger populations have slightly higher rates of crime so it’s worth comparing them within a subcategory. Flower Mound only reported 39 violent crimes for 2013. That should comfort the residents of this bustling little city.

  • Adjusted Crime Score: 295.88
  • Population: 68,835

Full List of Cities and Towns in Texas

Here is the entire list of towns and cities we included in our "Safest Cities in Texas" study. The cities are listed from the safest to the least safe (lowest crime to highest crime score). The calculation for our crime score can be found in the methodology below. Take a look and see where your town stacks up!

Methodology

In order to arrive at our rankings, we scraped data from the 2013 FBI crime statistics by city, which provides the most recent crime data available. We excluded towns with fewer than 10,000 residents because towns with smaller populations than that are much more sensitive to crime score fluctuations for fewer crimes committed. The raw data report included violent crimes (murder/manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) and property crimes (burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson) from all law enforcement agencies that participate in the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting program.

We standardized the data to reflect violent and property crimes per 100k, to account for population. We then aggregated a "crime score". In order to calculate this, we weighted violent crime at 90% and property crime at 10%; though property crime is far more prevalent, we figured that violent crime is more of a safety concern to residents of the town. To account for the fact that smaller cities with very slight upticks in crime are penalized more severely, we applied a logarithm to the population and multiplied it by the “crime score” to arrive at an “adjusted crime score.” We then ranked the cities relative to each other based on their adjusted crime scores.

Here is an alphabetical table of all cities included with their ranks, violent crime and property crimes per 100k, and adjusted crime scores:
