San Diego is home to one of the largest military populations in the U.S., with over 240,000 veterans and active personnel. If you're a renter that's part of this group, USAA is the clear choice for property and liability insurance. Its exceptional members-only coverage offers lower rates as well as outstanding attention to customer needs.

A standard renters policy from USAA includes not only the usual property and liability protections but also the rare addition of flood and earthquake coverage. Typically, other companies charge extra for protection from these two hazards.

USAA also offers you replacement cost coverage at no additional cost, another rare benefit. We recommend USAA for anyone who qualifies, especially since its many other financial products can prove useful later on when you consider buying a car or a home of your own.

Other affordable renters insurance providers in San Diego

If Lemonade and State Farm aren't right for you, or if you aren't eligible for USAA's coverage, you still have other affordable insurance providers in San Diego to choose from.

Farmers is an above-average option for renters insurance in San Diego. A policy costs $185, or $15.50 a month, and it doesn't take very long to get. Farmers is thorough about asking for hazards in your home, so you could see higher costs if your home contains a lot of risks.

Progressive would be one of the most affordable companies for renters insurance in San Diego if you didn't have to pay a lot of fees for their coverage. You can get a policy for $140 a year or $10.61 per month, but only after a $23 down payment and a $3 fee each time you make a payment. Even with fees, the cost comes to about $16 per month.

Nationwide is a good company for renters insurance in San Diego. You can buy a policy for $194 per year, or about $16 per month. You will also have to pay a $1 service fee each time you make a payment, unless you pay the full amount up front. Nationwide also makes it easy to check if you qualify for any discounts when you visit their website for a quote.

Liberty Mutual is a great cheap option for renters in San Diego, but only if you can live with lower coverage. Their highest policy limit for personal property protection for renters is $25,000. Liberty Mutual's quote process takes a little longer than other providers', but they try hard to pair you with lots of savings — including occupational discounts.

Compare renters insurance rates in San Diego

CompaniesAnnual CostMonthly Cost

State Farm$169$14.08
Progressive*$140*$10.61*
Farmers$185.61$15.55
Nationwide$194$16

Progressive's price doesn't include its required upfront payment or its monthly fees.

Do you need renters insurance in San Diego?

Although renters insurance is not legally required in San Diego, your landlord could require you to have insurance before you can sign a lease. Even if your lease doesn't require active renters insurance, it might still be a good idea for you to get coverage.

San Diego has experienced property damage from earthquakes, mudslides and mudflows in the past. However, insurers don't include coverage for earthquakes, mudslides or mudflows in a standard policy. Buying these special kinds of coverage in addition to your regular policy could be a good idea, though.

These events are rare, but their destruction can be expensive to recover from. It's true that special endorsements for these hazards have a reputation for being expensive, but you could benefit from coverage if you have a lot of assets you want to protect from damage.

Although San Diego is one of the safest big cities in the country, it's also expensive. With high costs of living, you may have more assets to replace if something terrible happens. It's useful to estimate that you’d need as much insurance as it would cost to replace your to replace all of your property. Most insurance companies will provide you with coverage recommendations based on how much you own when you request a quote if you are unsure.
