Best cheap travel insurance companies: Nationwide and IMG Patriot Travel

Nationwide and IMG Patriot Travel offer comprehensive policies for travelers on a budget.

Two travel insurance companies share the title of the best cheap travel insurance providers: Nationwide and IMG. They each represent one of two categories most important to travelers — comprehensive policies that offer various coverages, and travel medical insurance. Depending on the needs of an individual traveler, you'll likely only need one of these policies.

Best for comprehensive coverage: Nationwide

Nationwide’s Essential Plan is the best cheap travel insurance policy that offers comprehensive coverage. In addition to the standard coverages associated with travel insurance, the Essential Plan includes health, medical and death and dismemberment, as well as other benefits.

Benefits of the policy also include coverage for events before and during a trip, such as trip cancellation, trip interruption and travel delays. Policyholders will also have access to the company’s Travel Assistance service at no additional cost.

To add "Cancel For Any Reason" coverage, you can opt for Nationwide's Single-Trip Prime Plan instead. The maximum policy limits also are significantly higher, and you’ll receive additional benefits.

Essential Plan vs. Prime Plan pricing

Based on our pricing estimate, we found that there was about a $5 per day difference between Nationwide's Essential Plan ($8.23 per day) and the Prime Plan ($13.67 per day). This difference will fluctuate based on your age, destination and other factors.

Given that the Prime Plan includes "Cancel For Any Reason" coverage, we found that this was a great price for anyone needing this type of travel insurance. The Essential Plan is still an excellent option, offering both medical and trip cancellation and interruption protections.

Best travel insurance company for airfare: Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

Berkshire Hathaway's unique AirCare plan automatically files claims for you.

When it comes to domestic travel in the U.S., Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection is the best company on this list. Most travel insurance companies offer some form of coverage for flights, but Berkshire Hathaway's AirCare is unique. The company actively tracks flight activity and automatically transfers payouts for eligible circumstances without filing a claim. It also transfers money to policyholders for unique situations, such as a tarmac delay.

In addition to AirCare, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection offers ExactCare, providing more traditional travel insurance coverages. Whether you're making your regular visit to see family, on a business trip or taking a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, these are coverages to strongly consider.

AirCare vs. ExactCare pricing

Since AirCare only protects flight incidents, we found that it costs an affordable $15 to insure your entire flight. Meanwhile, ExactCare has several tiers of coverage, ranging from ExactCare Value to ExactCare Extra. Essentially, the higher the tier, the higher the insurance premiums are. We found that ExactCare ranged from $18.14 to $23.29 per day. While not the cheapest travel insurance policy, it offers lots of protection for those who want extra benefits beyond AirCare.

In addition to these plans, Berkshire Hathaway also offers specialized plans designed for road trips, luxury travel or adventures. These will typically come at a higher cost — up to $27.14 per day.

AirCare

A modern travel insurance product that offers protection on your flights.

The AirCare plan pays claims automatically when a qualifying event occurs, helping you avoid the claims process altogether. For example, if a regularly scheduled flight is canceled, the AirCare service deposits $150 into an account chosen by the policyholder. Other qualifying events include $500 payouts for lost luggage and a $1,000 bonus paid to policyholders who sit on the tarmac in their plane.

Best international travel insurance company: Allianz OneTrip

Allianz offers one of the best international travel insurance coverage packages on our list, thanks to its competitive pricing and top-notch technology to display your insurance benefits while on-the-go.

Policyholders can access Allianz Global Assistance Services through the Allianz TravelSmart app, available for free on both iOS and Android devices.

There are three levels of Allianz OneTrip travel insurance: Basic, Prime and Premier. Allianz makes it clear which types of vacations would fall under each insurance category, helping the user understand the best choice for them. The plans simply vary based on the maximum policy limits that come with each level of coverage.

Allianz OneTrip travel insurance pricing

Based on our estimates, Allianz offers the OneTrip Basic Plan for $8.29 per day, the OneTrip Prime Plan for $9.71 per day and the OneTrip Premier Plan for $13.14 per day. Therefore, there's only about a $5 difference per day between the OneTrip Basic Plan and the OneTrip Premier Plan. This price difference seems quite reasonable, given that the higher two tiers offer coverage for missed connections, airline change fees and frequent flyer mile redeposit fees. If you're going on a shorter international vacation, it may be worth splurging for the Prime or the Premier plans to gain the extra coverage.

Best secondary coverage travel insurance: HTH Travel Insurance

HTH Travel Insurance is available to almost any traveler who needs health insurance for travel abroad.

Assuming a traveler is a U.S. resident and will be traveling abroad, HTH Travel Insurance offers one of the best travel health insurance plans on this list. We like it because almost everyone is eligible for coverage — to qualify, you need to be a U.S. resident age 95 years old or younger who’s expecting to be outside the U.S. for more than 24 hours.

This insurance is perfect for the budget-conscious traveler who already has primary health insurance. Since HTH travel insurance offers secondary coverage, it's relatively affordable (as little as $10 per day or less). Unlike other travel medical plans, HTH Travel Insurance’s single-trip plans give policyholders the flexibility to choose the maximum benefit (or money the insurer will pay out) and their deductible to save even more.

HTH Travel Insurance covers 100% of the costs after a policy's deductible is met for surgery, anesthesia, in-hospital doctor visits, x-rays, lab tests and more. Consistent with other travel medical plans, HTH travel insurance will also pay 100% of the dental care cost needed after a related injury, up to $500. Mental health services are also covered up to the limit of this policy.

HTH Travel Insurance pricing

For secondary medical coverage, the HTH Travel Insurance is another affordable way to protect yourself on your trip. Our estimates showed that it only costs about $1.24 to $2.39 per day to purchase HTH Travel Insurance. By adjusting your maximum benefit, you can find a great deal on your travel medical insurance plan.

Consistent with other travel medical plans, HTH travel insurance will also pay 100% of the dental care cost needed after a related injury, up to $500. Mental health services are also covered up to the limit of this policy.

HTH Travel Insurance pricing For secondary medical coverage, the HTH Travel Insurance is another affordable way to protect yourself on your trip. Our estimates showed that it only costs about $1.24 to $2.39 per day to purchase HTH Travel Insurance. By adjusting your maximum benefit, you can find a great deal on your travel medical insurance plan.

How to get travel insurance through a travel rewards credit card

Before purchasing a policy, be sure to consider a travel rewards credit card with travel insurance benefits. By simply holding a credit card — as an example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, which comes with a reasonable $95 annual fee — and using it to book your travels, you’ll automatically have the following insurance policies covering you during your travels:

  • Trip cancellation/trip interruption insurance
  • Rental car insurance
  • Baggage delay insurance
  • Trip delay reimbursement
  • Roadside dispatch
  • Lost luggage reimbursement
  • Travel and emergency assistance
  • Travel accident insurance

Each of these policies covers different situations that can arise during your travels. Still, keep in mind that these coverages may not cover every problem you may face. So before you leave on your trip, research the policy to see what is covered and not covered.

If you need basic coverage and don’t anticipate doing any extreme sports or have any preexisting medical issues that may interfere with your travels, travel insurance from a credit card could serve you well. And to add to the convenience, you won’t need to call the credit card issuer to activate the policy. By paying the annual fee, the travel insurance policy is active, as long as you put your travel expenses on the card.

There are several travel rewards credit cards with travel insurance policies. Here are a few of our favorites:

How to select the best travel insurance policy for you

So, how do you decide which travel insurance is best for you? With a seemingly endless number of companies to choose from, it's hard to decipher the policies and coverage amounts that come with each policy. Before settling on the right trip insurance, consider the following factors:

  • Do you need comprehensive coverage or travel medical coverage? While comprehensive coverage is more pricey, it could come in handy if your trip is canceled or interrupted. Or, if your baggage is lost, stolen or damaged, your travel insurance can provide reimbursement. Those with expensive trips should consider purchasing comprehensive coverage, as you can get reimbursed for many nonrefundable travel expenses. Many budget-conscious travelers tend to opt for travel medical coverage instead, as you'll get the cheapest rates for essential medical coverage.
  • Does your travel insurance cover COVID-19 as a covered reason for trip cancellation or interruption? Many travelers are opting to purchase additional insurance to cover trip cancellation or interruption resulting from COVID-19. You’ll want to make sure you purchase a policy that allows you to "cancel for any reason," which will include reasons due to the ongoing pandemic.
  • Do you have a preexisting condition? If you have a chronic illness, you'll want to make sure that it's covered under your travel insurance. Mental health illnesses, neurological conditions and pregnancies aren't typically covered, so it's worth speaking directly to an insurance representative to discuss the best options for you.
  • What excursions or activities will you be doing while traveling? Suppose you’re partaking in a high-intensity sport like skiing or scuba diving, or something fun but risky like hot air ballooning. In that case, you'll want to make sure that your travel insurance will cover accidents or injuries resulting from these kinds of activities. You’ll also want to ensure that your travel insurance offers appropriate evacuation methods from a given location — a helicopter, for example, if you're traveling to a mountainous region that's hard to access.
  • How easy is it to make a claim? Some companies offer a simple app through which you can file claims after a trigger event, such as a flight delay or cancellation, or have 24-hour service. If this isn't the case, you may have a significantly more difficult time getting your claim processed or assisting in resolving issues in a timely fashion.
  • Will your travel insurance sufficiently cover your expenses? The cost of a delay or cancellation can be exceptionally high depending on your itinerary and the available transportation method. If you're traveling with expensive equipment (such as high-end cameras), you'll also want to make sure your travel insurance will adequately cover losses of your personal belongings.
  • Does your travel insurance offer flexibility in refunds? This is particularly important if you have concerns about making your trip on the intended date or if there's political unrest in a location you're traveling to.

Methodology

When it comes to travel insurance, it's not always about finding the cheapest policies. There's no use in purchasing additional travel insurance when it doesn't adequately cover your needs. To retrieve the quotes listed above, we used a $2,000 week-long trip to France for a 30-year-old male.

Based on multiple factors, we handpicked the top five travel insurance companies. However, not every traveler needs to have "cancel for any reason" insurance — which tends to be costly. Some travelers are looking for the bare minimum, so they would need to find medical travel coverage instead.

Therefore, our top five insurance companies met the following general criteria:

  • Does the travel insurance offer extensive benefits and coverages?
  • Is the travel insurance reasonably priced (under $25 per day?)
  • Does the company have a consumer satisfaction rating of four stars or higher?
  • Does the travel insurance company offer a simple yet efficient claims process?

While the best travel insurance policy for the consumer will depend on many more factors, these five travel insurance companies offer excellent protections for a reasonable price tag.

ValuePenguin’s verdict

Even before the coronavirus pandemic, purchasing travel insurance has always been a good idea. For just a small additional cost per day, you could protect yourself and the price of your costly trip. While many travelers can get away with the complimentary travel protections that come with their travel rewards cards, it's not a bad idea to consider purchasing additional insurance. If you have a preexisting condition or are concerned about COVID-19 cancellations, buying separate travel health insurance is the best way to ensure that you're insured in sticky situations.
