The Chase Sapphire Reserve® faces stiff competition as the best credit card for Airbnb. That's because several credit cards offer bonus points and even travel credits that can be used for Airbnb and other types of peer-to-peer rental platforms — like VRBO. Several top credit cards even let you redeem credit card points to offset the entire cost of a vacation home stay.

From condos to castles, more travelers are turning to Airbnb, VRBO and similar home-sharing services for unique stays when traveling. Plus, vacation rentals are even more appealing as many hotels continue to cut costs.

How to choose the best on Airbnb or VRBO credit card

Many hotel chains offer a co-branded credit card, but that's not the case for Airbnb. That means there's no one Airbnb credit card to use for Airbnb stays. Instead, you need to decide which credit card offers the best bonus and perks for your situation. Here's a few tips for making that decision.

One of the best ways to slash the cost of an Airbnb stay is by earning and utilizing a large sign-up bonus offer. For example, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card lets you Enjoy a one-time bonus of 75,000 miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel.

As Capital One miles can be redeemed to offset past travel purchases, you can use an Airbnb purchase to help you earn a sign-up bonus and then use those bonus miles to wipe out the cost of the Airbnb stay.

Not all points are worth the same for every type of redemption. If you know how to maximize airline and hotel points, consider earning Membership Rewards points. However, if you value cashback, Membership Rewards points is one of the least-valuable options. So, make sure to evaluate the redemption options for each card you're considering.

Chances are that you don't spend enough money on Airbnb to dedicate an entire card to Airbnb purchases. So, consider each card's bonus earning rates to figure which card fits best with your overall spending.

If you're an Amazon Prime subscriber and frequent Amazon shopper, the $0-annual-fee Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card will be a good fit for your everyday purchases. However, others might opt for a card with a simple 2x miles on everything to avoid having to remember bonus categories.

Generally, the highest earning rates on general travel purchases are on cards with the highest annual fees. These premium travel cards can also offer premium travel perks (e.g., airport lounge access) and travel protections (e.g., trip delay and lost luggage insurance).

However, you don't necessarily have to pay a high annual fee to maximize your earnings on Airbnb stays. For example, you can get 5% back by buying Airbnb gift cards on the $0 annual fee Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card.

Chances are you're a traveler if you're considering the best credit card for Airbnb. If you don't already have one, prioritize getting a credit card with no foreign transaction fees and travel protections. From reimbursing expenses during trip delays to providing funds when your bags are delayed, these travel protections can come in clutch when travel doesn't go to plan.

The good news is that you don't have to pay an annual fee to get these key perks. The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card charges $0 annual fee, $0 foreign transaction fees, and offers protections including lost luggage reimbursement, baggage delay insurance and a rental car damage waiver.

Tips for using a credit card on Airbnb or VRBO

Both Airbnb and VRBO make it as seamless as possible to collect your money. Still, here are some tips for using credit cards on Airbnb and VRBO:

  • Store your credit card information to avoid entering it each time you book. On Airbnb, log in to your account and browse to your Payments & Payouts page. Click "Add Payment Method," enter your credit card details and click "Done" to save the card to your profile. For VRBO, you'll need to click "Save this card for future use" at checkout to save a card to your profile.
  • Set a default credit card. If you have multiple saved cards in your Airbnb profile, select the best-earning one as your default payment method. To do so, click "…" (triple dots) next to the payment method and select "Set Default".
  • Remove expired cards to avoid accidentally selecting an expired card at checkout. To do so in Airbnb, click the "..." (triple dots) and select "Remove." Then click the "Remove" button.
  • Use a digital wallet to such as Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal to avoid sharing your credit card information directly with the home-sharing service. Plus, you may be able to earn bonus points by paying with a mobile wallet. For example, the U.S. Bank Altitude™ Reserve Visa Infinite® Card earns 3x points on mobile wallet spending.
  • Consider changing your payment card. Say you have an extended Airbnb stay booked when you open a new credit card with a lucrative sign-up bonus. You may still be able to change the payment card for your stay. For Airbnb, go into your Trip section and select the reservation you want to change. In "Payment details," click "Get receipts and manage payments." Under "Your payment details," select "Update payment details."

VRBO vs. Airbnb

Despite fierce competition, two providers undoubtedly dominate the peer-to-peer home-sharing services world. While there are plenty of similarities between the two, travelers should be aware of some differences.

The most significant difference is that you'll only find stand-alone vacation homes on VRBO. Airbnb also offers what it calls an "entire place." However, Airbnb also offers the option to book a private room in a shared space or even a shared sleeping room.

That means you'll find a lot more options on Airbnb. But, if you're looking for a private getaway, you can search through VRBO knowing that you won't have to worry about sorting through shared spaces.

To remove a credit card from Airbnb, go to the Payments and Payouts page. Click the … (triple dots) next to the payment method and click "Remove."

Unless you set up a payment plan, Airbnb charges your credit card as soon as the host accepts your request — or upon booking for Instant Book reservations. To avoid your card being charged at booking, guests have the option of choosing a payment plan.

For most reservations, you'll need to pay using a credit card tied to a major payment processor (e.g. Visa, MasterCard, Discover). However, guests from certain countries have additional payment options — such as Alipay or WeChat in China, PayU in India and Postepay in Italy.

Yes, Airbnb purchases generally count as travel purchases. However, to be sure, you'll want to check the Merchant Category Code (MCC) for Airbnb if this is critical for your situation.

Chase's travel category covers a very broad range of travel purchases, including Airbnb.

Airbnb accepts most major credit cards — including Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. Additionally, Airbnb accepts certain digital wallets such as Apple Pay through the iOS app, Google Pay through the Android app while in the U.S. and PayPal in certain countries.

Airbnb payment terms and conditions don't require the guest to use their own credit card to reserve a booking.

No, you can't split the cost of a reservation across two credit cards. Generally, Airbnb guests must pay for a reservation using one payment type, unless you have Airbnb credits or a coupon. Note that Airbnb used to allow guests to split payments with other guests. However, Airbnb removed the Group Payment option in September 2018.

Airbnb doesn't charge a fee for paying by credit card. However, Airbnb charges guests a Guest Service Fee of up to 14.2%, which helps the platform cover credit card transaction costs.

Airbnb considers cash payments — or other offline payments — a violation of its Terms of Service. A host or guest may be removed from Airbnb for trying to make such a payment. Airbnb points to security and fraud concerns for forbidding offsite payments.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
