Businesses of all sizes can benefit from the Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card, which comes with a great rewards rate and annual free night awards.

The Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card is one of our favorite business cards. It offers a rewards rate between 1.5% and 4.6%, which can be used to book hotel rooms, transfer to airline rewards programs and more.

Business owners who travel (even just once per year) are likely to find the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card to be a solid investment — but whether it's worth the $125 annual fee comes down to your business expenses. Regardless, this card comes with a free night award for each account anniversary, which can automatically help you break even on the annual fee if you take advantage of this certificate each year.

This combination of high rewards rate and redemption flexibility makes the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card well-suited for most small businesses that engage in travel.

  • Racking up lots of points for free stays at Marriott properties

Earning rate

With the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card, you'll earn points on both travel and everyday business purchases:

6x points at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels. 4x points at U.S. restaurants, at U.S. gas stations, on wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers and on U.S. purchases for shipping. 2x points on all other eligible purchases.

The card's rewards rate will hover between 1.5% and 4.6% — a fantastic return on a broad number of purchase categories.

What are Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card points worth?

We estimate a single Marriott Bonvoy point to be worth approximately 0.77 cents each.

Hotel rewards points tend to be worth lower than airline miles or general travel rewards, except for World of Hyatt, which offers a value of 1.7 cents per point.

Although Marriott Bonvoy points are worth less than the average rewards program point's value, they're also some of the easiest points to redeem. Unlike many rewards programs, Marriott provides an award chart that makes it easy to see exactly how many points you'll need to book your redemption.

Redeeming points

Marriott is one of the few rewards programs that still publish an award chart, clearly delineating the number of points you need to redeem for free stays.

Marriott Bonvoy is the most prominent hotel chain globally — it notes a presence in 131 countries with more than 7,000 locations — and its redemptions starting at just 5,000 points for an off-peak room. Some luxury properties charge as high as 100,000 points for peak dates. Searching for redemption options is relatively easy, as you can select the "Use points/certificates" box to see the price in points. Most hotels do not have blackout dates, with the exception of a few luxury properties.

Based on our research, we found that each Marriott Bonvoy point is worth 0.77 cents each. We found that hotels in Categories 1, 2 and 7 tend to offer the best value for your rewards, but this will also vary depending on the dates.

Annual free night certificates

After paying the $125 annual fee each account anniversary, you'll be gifted with one free night certificate for redemptions at or under 35,000 points. This means you can book a standard Category 5 hotel or peak Category 4 hotel for free. Depending on the property you choose, this certificate alone may be worth more than the annual fee.

If your business has many operating expenses, you're in luck. You'll receive an additional free night certificate if you spend more than $60,000 on purchases each calendar year.

Complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status and Elite night credits

It pays off to be an elite status member. With the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card, you'll enjoy complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status — which would typically require 10 stays per year.

At the Silver level, you'll enjoy 10% bonus points on hotel stays, priority late check-out, exclusive member rates and free premium Wi-Fi. Each calendar year, you'll also receive 15 Elite Night Credits toward the next level of Marriott Bonvoy elite status — this fast-tracks your way to Gold status, which lets you enjoy room upgrades and 25% bonus points on stays.

Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card vs. The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card

The top competing hotel business card is The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card, that comes with a slightly lower $95 annual fee. As American Express also issues this card, you'll enjoy many of the same ancillary benefits and services that come with the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card.

Currently, The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card comes with the better welcome offer: Earn 130,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points with the Hilton Honors American Express Business Card after you spend $3,000 in eligible purchases on the Card in the first 3 months of Card Membership. Each Hilton Honors point is worth slightly less on average at 0.5 cents each, but this offer is still worth an astounding $900.

You'll also enjoy Hilton Honors Gold status, the program's second tier, compliments of the card. The benefits are arguably better than Marriott Bonvoy Silver status, with an 80% base point bonus, fifth nights free and free breakfast. However, you won't enjoy automatic free night awards each year — you'll only receive a certificate after spending $15,000 each year. Ultimately, you'll have to decide which of Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors is the favorable program for you.

Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card vs. Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card

  • On Chase's Secure Website

If you're looking for a business card that is best for all-things travel, look no further than the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card. With a $95 annual fee, you'll enjoy one of the best sign-up bonuses out there: Earn 100,000 bonus points after you spend $15,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $1,000 cash back or $1,250 toward travel when redeemed through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.

While you won't enjoy any hotel-specific perks with the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, this is the best option for those who value rewards redemption flexibility. You can also transfer your points to Chase's 14 airline and hotel programs, including Marriott Bonvoy. Rewards maximizers could potentially unlock a phenomenal deal by transferring your points to these loyalty partners.

Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card vs. The Business Platinum Card® from American Express

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express is arguably the best card for businesses with high operating expenses and frequent travel. Be prepared to foot a hefty $595 annual fee — still, the travel benefits on this card might just be unmatched. You'll enjoy access to American Express Global Lounge Collection, including 1,300 airport lounges worldwide, as well as complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Gold status and Hilton Honors Gold status.

Again, you'll have to spend a lot to reap the full benefits of this card. The welcome offer currently offers the ability to Earn Earn 100,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $15,000 on eligible purchases with the Business Platinum Card within the first 3 months of Card Membership. But for those looking for luxury, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express is the most rewarding option out there.

Is the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card worth it?

The Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card is stocked with plenty of perks that make it worth paying the annual fee each year. If Marriott is your hotel brand of choice, business owners could benefit from owning this card. Even if you travel for a business a few times each year, you're bound to find a Marriott property anywhere you visit and enjoy additional benefits just for being a cardholder.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
