17 Best Ways to Use Southwest Rapid Rewards Points

Editorial Note: The content of this article is based on the author’s opinions and recommendations alone. It has not been previewed, commissioned or otherwise endorsed by any credit card issuer.

In an era when most airlines receive constant criticism, Southwest still has a large group of die-hard fans. The airline is an excellent option for folks on a budget who want to fly without feeling like they're flying on a budget, thanks to Southwest's flight sales, no-change-fee policy and the two-free-checked-bag allowance on all flights.

Great deals can be had if you're redeeming points. This guide will discuss the best ways to redeem your Southwest Rapid Rewards points for maximum value, along with how to find low-cost award flights, how to redeem your points for things such as hotels, rental cars and gift cards, and how to earn more Southwest Rapid Rewards points.

The 17 best ways to redeem Southwest Rapid Rewards points

While Southwest has very limited redemption options in terms of international flights, you can really make Rapid Rewards points stretch when booking domestic flights as well as flights to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America. Here are some of the best ways to make the most of your Southwest Rapid Rewards points.

1. Fly to Costa Rica

Fly to Costa Rica

Whether you're looking to hike a volcano, relax on a beach, or snap photos of sloths and toucans up in the rainforest canopy, this eco-friendly country is the perfect destination for travelers to get in touch with nature.

Redeeming Southwest points presents one of the most low-cost ways to get there. For example, flights from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to San Jose (Costa Rica's capital) start at just 4,056 points each way. If you're coming from farther afield, you'll need to have flexible dates to get the lowest prices. You can find flights from Chicago for as little as 8,190 points each way and from Los Angeles for 11,934 points each way, but these low-cost options are more limited.

2. Fly to New Orleans

Mardi Gras, anyone? This bayou jewel of the South is bursting with culture, perfect for chowing down on Cajun cuisine and enjoying world-class live music.

Flights from the Northeast and Midwest to New Orleans are so cheap they're almost free. From Chicago's Midway International Airport, you'll pay just 2,517 points if you fly out on the right dates. Coming from Boston, you can snag a one-way for 6,676 points.

3. Fly to Cuba

While there are restrictions on travel to Cuba, it's still possible for American travelers to visit by flying into Havana, and Southwest is one of the few American carriers operating regular commercial flights to the island. You'll need to do some research beforehand on how to visit Cuba as an American, but once you're there, you can kick back on the beach with a mojito, take some salsa lessons or take a ride in one of Cuba's iconic vintage taxis.

Flights from Florida are the most affordable, with Tampa and Fort Lauderdale being the only departure points currently offering nonstop flights to Havana on Southwest. A one-way from Tampa will cost you as little as 4,836 points.

Fly to Cuba

4. Fly to the Caribbean

If Cuba's not on your radar, there are still plenty of Caribbean destinations to choose from when it comes to redeeming Southwest Rapid Rewards points.

Southwest's Caribbean destinations:

  • Havana, Cuba
  • San Juan, Puerto Rico
  • Turks and Caicos
  • Nassau, Bahamas
  • Montego Bay, Jamaica
  • Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
  • Belize City, Belize
  • Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
  • Aruba

Florida offers the cheapest departure points, but a flight from Austin, Texas, to Turks and Caicos, for example, still only costs 10,452 points each way, making Southwest one of the cheapest ways to get to the Caribbean regardless of where you're coming from.

5. Fly to Mexico

Southwest offers routes to four of Mexico's most popular beach destinations: Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas on the Pacific, and Cancun and Cozumel on the Caribbean side.

Puerto Vallarta is a fun, family-friendly resort town, while Cabo is perfect if you're looking for a hip desert beach getaway. Cancun is famed for its nightlife, but also close to the popular Riviera Maya. The island of Cozumel offers world-class scuba diving. Flights from San Francisco to Cabo San Lucas cost as little as 9,438 points, while flights from New York to Cancun go for 8,814 points.

Fly to Mexico

6. Fly to Southern California

Whether you're planning a trip to Disneyland, a stay in hip West Hollywood or a vacation in sunny San Diego, Southwest has you covered. It flies to six destinations in Southern California: Los Angeles, Orange County, Long Beach, Burbank, Ontario and San Diego.

Flights from Chicago to San Diego will cost you just 3,750 points. If you're coming from nearby Portland, Oregon, to LAX, it'll cost you as little as 3,193 points.

7. Fly to Puerto Rico

In Puerto Rico, you can spend the morning hiking through a rainforest, the afternoon lounging on beautiful beaches and the evening strolling down the narrow city streets of Old San Juan. There's plenty to do, and your tourist dollars will help support their economy after Hurricane Maria. Plus, you don't need a passport!

You don't need to be in Florida to get there easily. You can catch direct flights to San Juan on Southwest from Baltimore, Chicago and Houston starting at 9,750 points.

8. Fly to New York City

Southwest flies into both LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport, making it easy to get to New York City from just about anywhere in the country. If you're looking for a nonstop flight, you can fly into LaGuardia from Atlanta, Nashville, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Chicago, Orlando, Milwaukee, New Orleans, San Antonio, St. Louis or Tampa.

If you're coming from Phoenix, you can fly direct to Newark, but any farther west and you'll have to connect. Still, a one-way ticket from San Francisco to New York's LaGuardia airport can be had for as little as 6,095 points.

9. Fly to Austin, Texas

If you're after both fun and sun, the live music capital of the world is the place to be. From taco stands and barbecue joints to popular watering holes and historic Sixth Street, Austin's entertainment district, you'll never run out of things to do.

Southwest offers a surprising number of nonstop flights to Austin. If you're coming from Oakland, California, you can get to the Texas capital for just 9,360 points each way.

10. Fly to Las Vegas

If you're after a weekend getaway filled with booze, parties, gambling and entertainment, a quick, cheap flight to Vegas on Southwest is the way to go. Coming from Los Angeles, you can skip the long drive and fly to Vegas for just 2,299 points almost any day of the week. A nonstop from Chicago's Midway airport can be had for as low as 3,460 points each way.

Fly to Las Vegas

11. Fly to Orlando

A family trip to Disney World is a bucket-list item, but between park tickets, Disney hotels and food, you'll be spending a pretty penny to cross it off.

Save money on flights to Orlando by redeeming Southwest points; the airline runs nonstop flights to Orlando from more than 50 cities. With enough flexibility, you can get there for under 10,000 points each way from almost anywhere in the country.

12. Fly to Niagara Falls

Another bucket-list destination, Southwest runs regular, affordable flights to Buffalo, New York—home to the majestic Niagara Falls and the birthplace of buffalo wings. A one-way ticket from Chicago can be snagged for around 5,000 points each way, and a nonstop flight from Phoenix will only cost you 10,594 points each way.

13. Fly to Hawaii

Southwest is a great choice for redeeming points to Hawaii. Not only does it offer some of the most affordable redemptions, but the airline also flies to several different islands. You can use Southwest points to get to Hilo or Kona on Hawaii Island, Honolulu on Oahu, or Kahului on Maui.

The airline also offers interisland flights, so you could fly into Honolulu for the big-city experience, hop over to Kona for some of the world's best coffee, and then finish it all off in Maui with a trip to Haleakala volcano.

14. Book a pretrip flight

Southwest might not offer a long list of international destinations, but it can be a great way to get to your departure point for an international flight or cruise.

For example, you can often find low-cost flights to Europe from New York City or to Asia from the West Coast. If you live in the middle of the country, it might be more cost-effective to purchase a cheap flight on another airline and then redeem miles with Southwest to get to your departure point.

15. Book Wanna Get Away fares

Southwest doesn't have a business or first class, but it does have three different fare classes: Wanna Get Away, Anytime and Business Select. Business Select tickets offer priority A1–A15 boarding.

Wanna Get Away is the airline's most affordable fare, so you want to look for those if you're keen on saving points. Luckily, availability is pretty widespread, and this fare isn't like the basic economy fares on other airlines. You'll still get two free checked bags and a shot at early boarding. Tickets are nonrefundable, but you're still able to change your flight without paying a change fee.

Anytime fares, on the other hand, are fully refundable, and Business Select fares include priority boarding, bonus points and a complementary alcoholic beverage. In most cases, it's really not worth paying extra for these fare classes as you're not necessarily getting a better seat, and the price difference can be pretty vast.

16. Get a companion pass

The coveted Southwest companion pass lets you pick one companion to fly with you for free (aside from mandatory taxes and fees) on all Southwest flights, whether purchased with cash or points, for a calendar year. In fact, you'll get to use the pass for the remainder of the year in which you earn it as well as the entire following year.

You need to fly with Southwest pretty frequently to earn the companion pass. You can either complete 100 eligible one-way flights in a year or earn 125,000 Rapid Rewards points in a year. However, there is one way to get it quicker: with credit cards. You can speed up your journey to 125,000 Rapid Rewards points by earning nearly half that with a welcome bonus on a Southwest co-branded credit card.

17. Rebook flights when prices drop

Southwest is one of the very few remaining airlines to not charge a change fee. Take advantage of this by paying attention to flight prices, even after you book your ticket. If the price drops, you can rebook and collect the price difference in your points balance.

All fare classes are allowed to do this, and you can change your flight up until departure time. Pay attention to Southwest's frequent nationwide flight sales, as decreases in the cash price usually mean the points price will go down as well.

How many Southwest Rapid Rewards points do you need for a free flight?

Like most airlines, Southwest doesn't operate with a fixed award chart anymore, but unlike airlines such as Delta Air Lines, the number of points you need to redeem for a flight on Southwest doesn't seem completely random. It's usually tied to the cash fare. This means that, just like airfare, the points price depends on the route, distance, time of year, demand and other factors.

However, it's not hard to find flights that get you around 1.5 cents to 2.0 cents per point. In other words, a flight that costs $400 in cash is likely to cost around 22,000 points.

How to book an award flight with Southwest Rapid Rewards points

Southwest makes it very easy to search for and book award flights directly through its website. If you want to opt for the lowest fares and have some flexibility, try using its "Low Fare Calendar."

1. Go to Southwest.com and select "Low Fare Calendar" in the booking tool.

2. Enter your departure and arrival points along with the months in which you'd like to depart and return, and hit "Search."

Other ways to redeem Southwest Rapid Rewards points

Apart from booking flights on Southwest, you can also redeem your points for a wide range of other purchases. These include:

  • International flights on partner airlines
  • Hotels
  • Rental cars
  • Shopping
  • Gift cards
  • Experiences

However, none of these offer the best value for your points. For most options, you'll be getting around 0.6 to 0.8 cent per point, when redeeming points for a Southwest flight usually gets you 1.5 to 2.0 cents per point. For that reason, we don't recommend these redemption options unless you are unable to use your points for a flight.

How do you earn Southwest Rapid Rewards points?

Southwest points aren't just easy to redeem—they're also easy to earn. You can stockpile Southwest points by flying Southwest, but you can also add to your balance by dining out, renting cars, staying with hotel partners and using Southwest co-branded credit cards.

Flying

You'll earn Southwest Rapid Rewards points every time you fly with Southwest, as long as you have a Southwest Rapid Rewards account, which is free and easy to start. The number of points you earn depends on how much your ticket costs and which fare class you purchased. The chart below explains the earning rate with Southwest Rapid Rewards. It's worth noting that elite members will earn at an even higher rate.

Fare typeWanna Get AwayAnytimeBusiness Select
Points earned6 points per $110 points per $112 points per $1

Buying points

Like most airlines, Southwest allows you to purchase Rapid Rewards points. This is rarely worth it if you're purchasing points at the regular price of 3 cents per point; however, if you encounter a good sale, it might be worth it.

Right now, Southwest is running a fall sale on points that gives you 35% off when you buy at least 3,000 points. This means you'll get points at roughly 1.79 cents each. While a much better value, it's still barely enough to offer a discount, and that's if you redeem them at the higher end of their value spectrum.

Shop and dine

The Southwest Rapid Rewards Dining and Shopping portals allow you to earn extra Rapid Rewards points each time you shop online or dine out.

The shopping portal is where you can make purchases with hundreds of different major retailers and earn anywhere from 1 to 25 points per dollar spent. The dining portal allows you to earn up to 3 points per dollar spent at participating restaurants and bars when you pay with one of your registered debit or credit cards.

Travel partners

Southwest has a handful of Rapid Rewards travel partners, mostly hotels and rental car agencies, that allow you to earn Rapid Rewards points when you complete a stay or rent a car. With hotel partners, you typically earn a few hundred points per stay. With rental car partners, you'll usually earn 600 Rapid Rewards points per rental. Partners are listed below.

Rapid Rewards hotel partners

  • Best Western
  • Radisson
  • Hyatt
  • Choice Hotels
  • Marriott
  • MGM
  • Rocketmiles
  • SPG

Credit cards

One of the quickest ways to earn Rapid Rewards points is by opening and using certain rewards credit cards. A handful of co-branded Southwest credit cards earn Southwest Rapid Rewards points on each dollar you spend. You can also target sign-up bonuses, which award you a lump sum of points for spending a certain amount within the first few months. A few general travel credit cards also earn points that you can transfer to Southwest's Rapid Rewards program.

The best credit cards for earning Southwest Rapid Rewards points

If you're looking to boost your Southwest points balance using credit cards, these are the best Southwest co-branded credit cards and generic travel credit cards that let you transfer points to Southwest.

Southwest co-branded credit cards

Southwest's co-branded credit cards are best for travelers who regularly fly with Southwest. Even if you only fly with Southwest a few times per year, you'll be able to earn bonus points on spending with hotel and rental car partners as well, and the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card comes with a low annual fee of $69. More frequent Southwest flyers should consider the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card, which comes with additional bonus points, upgraded boardings, a travel credit and a quicker path to elite status.

Earning Southwest Rapid Rewards points with Chase Ultimate Rewards credit cards

You can also rack up Southwest Rapid Rewards points by earning Chase Ultimate Rewards points with one of Chase's several Ultimate Rewards-earning travel credit cards. Chase allows you to transfer your Ultimate Rewards points to Southwest Rapid Rewards at a 1:1 rate.

These credit cards are ideal if you want more flexibility in how you redeem your rewards, as you can also redeem these points for a variety of flights, hotel stays and more. Depending on your spending habits, you might also find that you're able to earn points at a faster rate with these cards than with a Southwest co-branded card.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve® cards are two of the most popular travel credit cards on the market. They come with generous sign-up bonuses and high earn rates. While the annual fee on the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is significantly higher ($550, versus the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card's $95 annual fee), it also comes with some very high-value perks such as a $300 annual travel credit and complimentary airport lounge access. If you're a business owner, you might want to consider the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, which offers bonus points on select business spending and the biggest sign-up bonus of all three cards.

Final thoughts

Southwest may be more limited than other airlines in terms of international routes, but if you tend to fly routes that are offered by Southwest, the Rapid Rewards program offers one of the best values of any frequent-flyer program. Southwest makes it easy to find low-cost award flights, and the points are some of the most valuable among its peers. Thanks to Southwest's co-branded credit cards and Chase's Ultimate Rewards credit cards, you can earn a significant number of Southwest Rapid Rewards points without even flying.

Advertiser Disclosure: The products that appear on this site may be from companies from which ValuePenguin receives compensation. This compensation may impact how and where products appear on this site (including, for example, the order in which they appear). ValuePenguin does not include all financial institutions or all products offered available in the marketplace.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
