With the U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card consumers can enjoy a mix of rewards and interest savings. The card offers 0% intro APR on balances transferred within the first 30 days, and gives users a 2% rewards rate on gas and grocery purchases. Good For…

Bad For…
  • Individuals who want to transfer a balance to a card that won't be devalued after the APR promo period runs out
  • Anyone who is looking for the absolute best rewards or best balance transfer offer

  • Those who spend a lot on gas and groceries
  • Short-term value, due to a lack of welcome bonus

Review: Is The U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card Worth It?

The U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card is a decent option for those looking for a balance transfer credit card with potential long-term value. This card, outside of offering a promotional 0% intro APR on balances transferred with 30 days of account opening, also gives users rewards points for every dollar they spend. This makes the US Bank Perks+ a ‘jack of all trades, master of none’ type of card. There are many other credit cards available that will, on their own, be either a better balance transfer or rewards credit card. Few, however, will offer users both. Therefore, if you want to get the cream of the crop in both categories, you will need to open multiple credit card accounts. With the U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card you can get all of it in one package.

As a rewards card, the U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card is best for consumers with large gas and grocery expenditures – earning a minimum rewards rate of 2% in these categories. You can get the best value out of this card, if you don't mind redeeming your rewards on airfare - we explore this in greater detail below. On all other purchases, cardholders can earn just 1% back.

One of the more disappointing aspects of the U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card is that it doesn’t have a welcome bonus. This severely limits its short-term value. The top rewards credit cards come with bonuses worth as much as $750.

Finally, as mentioned, consumers who move a balance over to the U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card within 30 days of their account opening will receive 0% intro APR for 12 billing cycles. The amount of money this will save an individual will depend on how much debt they have, and how long it will take them to pay it off. With an average credit card debt of $9,036 and $180 monthly payments, deferring an average APR of 18% for 12 months can save $3,799. By comparison, if you were to move that balance over to a 15 month intro APR card, such as the Chase Slate®, your savings would go up to $4,794.

Bottom Line: If you are in need of a balance transfer, and want a card that will be useful in the long run at the same time, the U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card is a good option for individuals who spend a lot on gas and groceries.

U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa® Signature Card Benefits & Features

The US Bank Perks+ credit card is a hybrid rewards/balance transfer credit card. Using this card to pay for gas and grocery purchases earns 2 reward points per $1. When used towards cash back, this can translate to a rewards rate of 2% - a relatively high value when compared against most other offers. All other spending with the card yields 1 point per $1.

  • No annual fee

This card also provides 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 billing cycles. The length of this promotional period is short when compared against the best balance transfer credit cards – some of which provide 0% intro APR for as long as 21 months. Every time you transfer a debt to the US Bank Perks+ Visa Signature card you will incur a 3% balance transfer fee. This is standard with most credit cards, though cards like the Chase Slate® waive it as an introductory offer.

Important Note: If you use this card for a balance transfer, make sure to pay down that balance before making any purchases onto the credit card. If you charge new purchases to the card, you will be digging yourself into bigger financial debt. It is more sound to deal with your credit card debt first, and not pile on more to it.

How To Get The Most Out Of U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card Reward Points?

We estimate the value of a single point to be anywhere between $0.01 and $0.012. However, it is possible to squeeze extra value out of the points through travel redemptions. The reward points can also be used to buy airline tickets. You need 25,000 points for tickets up to $400 in value – then another 25k for each additional $400. This can cause the per-point value to greatly vary. At best, you can get $0.016 per point out of this, if you stick close to the $400 intervals. However, this will require some planning. The tickets are booked through US Bank and Travelocity. A roundtrip flight between NYC and LA on JetBlue costs around $323. At 25k points, that carries a per-point value of $0.013 – still better than the cash back and gift card redemptions.

If you’re interested in travel redemptions, however, U.S. Bank offers a far better card for that – the US Bank FlexPerks® Travel Rewards Visa Signature® Card. Even though the U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card has “Perk” in its name, the rewards points you earn with it are NOT FlexPerks. The latter carry a better average value from their redemptions of $0.016 per point.

If you don't want to wait around to get 25,000 points before redeeming for rewards, you can also use this card towards cash back or gift cards, at a lower value. When you use this card’s rewards points towards cash back, you need a minimum of 5,000 points – this will net you $50 in statement credit. Gift card redemptions start at 2,500 points, a $25 value.

How Does The U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card Compare To Other Credit Cards?

It’s impossible to determine the value of a credit card absent context. That is why we compared the U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card against a couple similar offers, and explain each option's pros and cons.

U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card vs Barclays CashForward™ World Mastercard®

Barclays CashForward™ World Mastercard®
This card is not available through ValuePenguin.

The Barclays CashForward™ World Mastercard® gives consumers a flat 1.5% cash back on every purchase, plus a 5% bonus on every redemption. It also gives consumers 0% introductory APR on balance transfers for the first 15 months for each balance transfer made within 45 days of account opening. That period is 3 months longer than the U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card. The question of which card will be better for you depends on how your spending breaks down. If half or more of your credit card expenditures are outside of gas and grocery categories, the Barclays CashForward™ World Mastercard® is the better card to get – this is assuming cash back redemptions. If you plan on using your Perks+ points on travel, the comparison gets harder to make, since everyone’s mileage will vary, based on the type of deals they get.

Like most good cash back credit cards, the Barclays CashForward™ World Mastercard® comes with a welcome bonus - $200 in cash rewards after you spend $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening. If you qualify, that puts the Barclays CashForward™ World Mastercard® leagues above the U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card in terms of immediate value.

U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card vs Chase Freedom®

The Chase Freedom® is another card that offers both a rewards program and a 0% intro APR promotion. In terms of zero interest, the Chase Freedom® is a better offer than the U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card – giving users 15 billing cycles of 0% intro APR.

In terms of rewards, the Chase Freedom® is a rotating cash back credit card with a higher rewards potential. It gives 5% back on up to the first $1,500 spent in categories that change every 3 months. In the long-term, the U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card will provide users with the better rewards on gas and grocery purchases, since for at least some portion of the year, the Chase Freedom® will give you just a 1% rewards rate in these categories.

U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card vs Barclays Arrival™ World MasterCard®

Barclays Arrival™ World MasterCard®
This card is not available through ValuePenguin.

The Barclays Arrival™ World MasterCard® is better for consumers who spend more on dining out and travel than gas and groceries. These two credit cards have very similar 0% introductory balance transfer APR offers – each one lasting 12 billing cycles. The only difference is that the offer is extended to balances transferred within 45 days on the Barclays Arrival™ World MasterCard®, compared to 30 days on the U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card. The Barclays card gives users a 2.1% rewards rate on dining and travel expenses, and 1.05% on everything else.

The Barclays Arrival™ World MasterCard® is the superior value in the short-term, for those who qualify for the 20,000 mile bonus it offers. In order to get it, cardholders must spend at least $1,000 on purchases, within the first 3 months of account opening. As mentioned in the review above, the lack of a welcome offer on the U.S. Bank Perks+ Visa Signature® Card is disappointing.

The Net Rewards Rate is equal to the Rewards Value over two years divided by the total spending. The total spending is equal to the values entered into the tool and multiplied by 24 months. See the rewards Value note to see details on how it is calculated.

The estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone. They are not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer. All estimates are based on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

Bonus Value

The bonus field shows our estimate for the value of the card’s welcome bonus. If the bonus is point or mile based, we multiply the total bonus points/miles by our estimate for their value to arrive at a dollar equivalent. We display $0 if there is no bonus or if the user doesn’t qualify for the bonus based on the current spending entered into the tool. 2-yr Rewards Value

The Rewards value is calculated by adding together the rewards earned from charging purchases to the card over two years and any welcome bonuses (if applicable). They are then multiplied by our estimated point/mile value, with any annual fees (if applicable) subtracted. All values are based on our own estimates for the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using a card and on the spend assumptions entered above (which you can edit).

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
