The Select Rewards business credit card from U.S. bank has a flexible rewards program, which can lend itself to a variety of different businesses. Users can earn 3 points per $1 on purchases in a category of their choosing, which are summarized in the following table.

Category

What's Included

Day-to-day Expenses

Shipping, advertising, utilities, office supplies, telecom and professional services

Automotive

Gas, service, tires, tolls, dealerships, car washes and repairs

Travel and Entertainment

Shipping and advertising, in particular, are two of the more unique categories we've seen credit card companies issue bonus points for. A number of credit cards, both business and personal, reward extra points for spending on office supplies and road or air travel. Therefore, if your monthly expenses are heavily weighted towards shipping products or goods to customers, this can be a worthwhile card to have. Perhaps a good chunk of your operational expenses is running ads in local newspapers or on television, U.S. Bank Business Select Rewards Card is a good option to keep around. Just check that US Bank recognizes those vendors as advertising and shipping companies.

The reward points you earn through this card are best spent on travel redemptions - there they can average a rate of $0.01 per point. Using them for statement credit, on the other hand, would result in just $0.007. If the points are used for travel redemptions, shopping in one of the above categories will yield a rewards rate of 3% - significantly higher than average. Businesses can earn unlimited points with no caps by using the U.S. Bank Business Select Rewards Card.

Highlights

  • 10,000 bonus points when you spend $500 during the first 90 days after opening your account
  • 3% rewards rate on category of choice: day-to-day expenses, automotive, or travel and entertainment
  • No annual fee

The Cash Rewards Edge business credit card from US bank is a decent cash back credit card for businesses with heavy gas, office, and cellular expenditures. Since the rewards are in the form of cash back, businesses using the U.S. Bank Business Edge™ Cash Rewards World Elite™ MasterCard® can enjoy greater freedom in how to use their credit card rewards - as opposed to, for example, the U.S. Bank Business Select Rewards Card which forces you into travel redemptions for the highest value. The two Chase business credit cards also provide rewards in similar categories, at a far better rewards rate (5%). However, both the Ink Plus® Business Credit Card and the Ink Business Cash℠ Credit Card have spending caps, after which the rewards earn rate is knocked down to just 1%. The rewards earned through the U.S. Bank Business Edge™ Cash Rewards World Elite™ MasterCard® are unlimited. Therefore, if you spend at least $95,200 annually in these 3% categories, we heavily recommend getting the U.S. Bank Business Edge™ Cash Rewards World Elite™ MasterCard® for your business.

This card also earns users a 25% bonus on annual rewards – up to $250 annually. That means for the first $6,667 in spending on gas, office supplies, and cell phone bills the actuall rewards rate on this card will be 3.75%.

Highlights

  • 3% cash back on all cellular, gas and office supply net purchases
  • 25% bonus based on your prior year’s Cash Rewards, up to $250

The FlexPerks Business Edge credit card is best for businesses with expenditures that vary throughout the year. The card earns users 2 FlexPoints per $1 on gas, office supply or airline purchases - whichever you spent most on, in a given billing cycle. Through this, you are not locked into a single reward category, allowing you to optimize rewards month-to-month, based on your firm's spending. This works great if you're on the road for client meetings in certain periods in the year, or you concentrate buying your paper or printing needs seasonally. We value a single FlexPoint at $0.017, meaning the rewards rate on these purchases comes out to 2.4%. All other spending results in 1 point per $1, or a 1.7% rewards rate.

Whenever you redeem your points earned through the U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Business Travel Rewards on travel, you will also be granted a $25 airline allowance per ticket. This can be used to pay down things such as baggage fees or in-flight food. This benefit can be a big money saver for companies that need to fly employees out for long business trips, which require them to check bags.

Highlights

  • 20,000 bonus FlexPoints after you spend $3,500 in net purchases within the first four months of account opening (estimated value: $338)
  • Rewards rate between 1.7% and 2.4%
  • $55 annual fee credit every year you spend more than $24,000

The Business Edge Platinum card from US Bank is an excellent choice for companies that need to carry a balance month to month, or those that want to consolidate their previous credit card debt into a lower interest offer. Perhaps your company made a large equipment or capital investment in the beginning of the year that needs future sales to help pay off. Business Edge™ Platinum helps to lighten the load. This is one of the few small business credit cards to come with a '0% intro APR' benefit on balance transfers.

The one caveat to saving money on interest is that the Business Edge™ Platinum doesn't have any rewards program. Therefore, once your company's financials become more stable, and you can consistently pay down your balance in full each month, it will be financially more rewarding to sign up for a rewards credit card. That way, you will optimize every dollar you spend on credit.

Highlights

  • 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 billing cycles
  • No annual fee

Business Solutions

One of the important decisions a business owner makes is what credit card to pick for their company – that is what kind of control and management options are provided? American Express and Chase Business credit cards are particularly good at allowing businesses to track how their money is being spent, by making spending exportable into programs such as Quicken. US Bank business credit card lack such features.

However, US Bank does allow business owners to set control over how employee cards are used. They may restrict the time of day/week, geographic area, merchant type, credit limit, and transaction type per card. This can be especially helpful for mid-sized businesses, with many employee cards out in circulation.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
