United Quest℠ Card review: A Valuable Card For United Airlines Flyers

There are four United Airlines credit cards with varying perks and benefits. The United Quest℠ Card sits just below the top-tier card but is packed with value for the right traveler. This card comes with a collection of valuable travel benefits sure to excite fans of the airline. Perks range from United and other credits to priority boarding and more.

Given its higher $250 annual fee, this United credit card isn't perfect for every traveler. If you're a moderate to frequent traveler who spends most of your time flying United exclusively, the United Quest℠ Card could be a great fit. Occasional travelers and those who only fly United when there's a deal won't get enough value with this particular card. If that's the case, one of United's lower-tier cards or a general travel rewards card may be a better option.

Is the United Quest℠ Card worth it?

First Year Savings

$860 ?

The United Quest℠ Card offers enough value for the frequent United traveler to justify the $250 annual fee. We estimate the first-year value of the card at $860 after adding up the large sign-up bonus, points earned on card spending and subtracting the annual fee. Other worthwhile benefits, like the $125 United credit that applies to most United purchases (including airfare) and $100 Global Entry/TSA Precheck credit, add even more value to this midtier airline credit card.

Earn 70,000 miles

The United Quest℠ Card features a tremendous sign-up bonus: Earn 70,000 bonus miles after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open.

This bonus rivals almost any airline credit card on the market. Miles are valued at roughly 1.2 cents each, so the bonus alone is worth approximately $840 worth of travel on United flights.

What it's worth: Around $840 in United airfare, according to our estimates

Who's eligible to earn this offer?: According to the terms and conditions, current cardholders and previous holders of the card who have earned a bonus on the card in the past 24 months are not eligible for the offer. Those who have opened five or more credit cards in the past 24 months may also be ineligible, per Chase's 5/24 rule.

Earn 3X miles on United purchases

Like most airline credit cards, you'll earn the most bonus miles through United purchases:

3 miles per $1 spent on United® purchases. 2 miles per $1 spent at restaurants, on select streaming services & on all other travel. 1 mile per $1 spent on all other purchases. Plus, each year, receive a $125 credit on United® purchases and two 5k-mile anniversary award flight credits. Terms apply.

The card seems to cover many of the top spending categories among travelers while offering the standard 1X mile on everything else.

Unfortunately, the rewards value of miles earned with the United Quest℠ Card doesn't fare well against most luxury rewards cards currently.

Average rewards earned per $1 spent

We estimate an earning rate for the average consumer based on U.S. Bureau of Labor data and multiply that by the value of each card’s points or miles.

How much are United Quest℠ Card miles worth?

Miles earned with the United Quest℠ Card are worth approximately 1.2 cents per mile by our estimates. Some award flights may offer more or less value depending on factors like destination, date and time.

To calculate the value of United Quest℠ Card miles, try this formula:

Dollar value of redemption option (minus any taxes or fees you have to pay)/Number of miles needed = Value of miles

Redeeming miles

United Airlines is part of the Star Alliance. That means you can earn or redeem United Miles with partner airlines like Lufthansa, Avianca, TAP Portugal and more.

On the plus side, United MileagePlus miles are valuable and simple to redeem, with plenty of award availability within United's flight network and via its Star Alliance partners. Another bonus of earning MileagePlus miles is that they never expire. There's no need to burn them quickly to keep their value.

United Airlines switched to dynamic award pricing in 2019, meaning that award pricing fluctuates with demand. Award flights start at around 5,000 miles for a one-way award and can range well over 100,000 miles, depending on the route, fare class and level of demand.

The specific value of United miles depends on how you redeem them. Long-haul international flights, especially in Business or First Class, seem to offer the most value.

What credit score do you need for the United Quest℠ Card?

The United Quest℠ Card requires at least a 660 credit score. Ensure that your credit score is up to par and that you can afford the $250 annual fee before applying for the United Quest℠ Card.

Other United Quest℠ Card benefits

While the United Quest℠ Card offers plenty of ways to earn valuable miles, the card comes with access to a slew of other benefits and perks frequent travelers will enjoy.

Cardholders receive up to $125 in statement credits annually for United Airlines purchases made with their United Quest℠ Card. The credit is very easy to use, since it covers most United purchases, including airline tickets, in-flight food and beverage purchases, Wi-Fi, baggage fees and United card events. This credit can make up for half the card's annual fee each year.

The card also comes with two 5,000-mile flight credits annually. After completing an award flight, United will refund 5,000 MileagePlus miles to your account up to twice (10,000 miles total) each year.

Primary cardholders and one traveling companion on the same reservation are eligible for free first and second standard checked bags on United-operated flights. That's a value of up to $320 roundtrip.

Another solid perk with the United Quest℠ Card is priority boarding. Cardholders and any travel companions on the same reservation have access to priority boarding before general boarding begins. Early boarding allows you to find adequate storage for carry-on luggage and gives you more time to settle in before the flight departs.

Subject to availability, United Quest℠ Cardholders with MileagePlus Premier status are also eligible for free Premier upgrades on United and United Express flights. This perk only applies to primary cardholders, not travel companions or authorized users.

The United Quest℠ Card also offers opportunities to reach MileagePlus Premier status quicker. Primary cardholders earn 500 Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs) for every $12,000 in net purchases. You can earn a maximum of 3,000 PQPs through card spending.

This could give you most — or all — the points you need to get to the next level of elite status with United, depending on the level:

Elite status
Qualifications for 2022 Premier status
Premier SilverFly eight PQFs and earn 3,000 PQPs or earn 3,500 PQPs
Premier GoldFly 16 PQFs and earn 6,000 PQPs or earn 7,000 PQPs
Premier PlatinumFly 24 PQFs and earn 9,000 PQPs or earn 10,000 PQPs
Premier 1K®Fly 36 PQFs and earn 13,500 PQPs or earn 15,000 PQPs

Cardholders are eligible for up to a $100 statement credit once every four years for Global Entry or TSA Precheck application fees. You must use your card to pay the application fees to receive a statement credit.

Cardholders using their United Quest℠ Card for inflight purchases will receive 25% back in the form of statement credits. In-flight purchases include food, beverages and Wi-Fi on United and United Express flights.

The United Quest℠ Card comes with several travel protections that are sure to come in handy for frequent travelers, including:

  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption insurance — Up to $1,500 per person and $6,000 per trip
  • Baggage delay insurance — Up to $100 a day for three days for delays over six hours
  • Lost luggage reimbursement — Up to $3,000 per passenger for lost or damaged luggage
  • Trip delay reimbursement — Up to $500 per ticket for delays of 12 hours or more

Another solid feature of the United Quest℠ Card is its car rental coverage. Cardholders who use the card to pay for car rentals and decline the rental company's insurance receive primary coverage against theft or damage.

How does the United Quest℠ Card compare?

United Quest℠ Card vs. United℠ Explorer Card

Verdict: A better option for casual travelers.

On Chase's Secure Website

The United℠ Explorer Card is a lower-tier card within the United card family. That said, it may be a better choice for casual travelers or those who don't fly United Airlines exclusively. The card still comes with several premium perks offered by the United Quest℠ Card, but without the hefty annual fee.

United℠ Explorer Card still comes with a decent sign-up bonus and still earns points on United purchases and other popular spending categories like dining and hotel accommodations. Plus, it comes with two United Club one-time passes each year. It's a solid airline credit card considering its lower annual fee.

How does it compare?

  • Annual fee: $0 Intro for the First Year, then $95 (better)
  • Welcome bonus: Earn 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open. (worse)
  • Rewards earned/$1 spent: $0.015 (worse)
  • Other benefits: Free first checked bag, priority boarding, Global Entry or TSA Precheck fee credit, two United Club one-time passes, 25% back on in-flight purchases (worse)

United Quest℠ Card vs. United Club℠ Infinite Card

Verdict: The king for travelers looking for airport lounge access

On Chase's Secure Website

The United Club℠ Infinite Card sits above the United Quest℠ Card as the premier United Airlines co-branded card. The primary difference between the cards is the United Club membership that comes with the United Club℠ Infinite Card. Membership gives cardholders and qualifying guests access to more than 45 airport United Club and partner airport lounges worldwide.

Other extra perks include IHG Rewards Platinum status, a $75 IHG statement credit, a $70 discount on CLEAR membership and more. The United Club℠ Infinite Card is best for individuals looking for the very best luxury travel perks and will use enough of the benefits to justify the premium annual fee.

How does it compare?

  • Annual fee: $525 (worse)
  • Welcome bonus: Earn 80,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. (better)
  • Rewards earned/$1 spent: $0.014 (worse)
  • Other benefits: United Club membership, Free first and second checked bag, Premier Access travel services, Global Entry or TSA Precheck fee credit, IHG Rewards Platinum status, a $75 IHG statement credit, a $70 discount on CLEAR membership (better)

United Quest℠ Card vs. Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

Verdict: More flexible travel rewards

On Chase's Secure Website

If you don't travel exclusively with United Airlines, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is probably the better option. That's because it's one of the most versatile travel rewards credit cards around. You can redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards® points for almost any type of travel and other options. Plus, points are worth 25% more when redeemed for travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.

You can also transfer your Chase points at a 1:1 ratio to one of its many airline and hotel partners' loyalty rewards programs (including United MileagePlus). The card rounds out its perks with several travel and purchase protections.

How does it compare?

  • Annual fee: $95 (better)
  • Welcome bonus: Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $750 when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards®. (better)
  • Rewards earned/$1 spent: $0.025 (better)
  • Other benefits: Trip cancellation/interruption insurance, auto rental collision damage waiver, baggage delay insurance, trip delay reimbursement, extended warranty protection (worse)

Should you apply for the United Quest℠ Card?

For frequent flyers of United, especially those who need extra points to earn elite status, the United Quest℠ Card is worth applying for. The United Quest℠ Card offers many premium perks at a lower cost than the United Club℠ Infinite Card.

Keep in mind it doesn't come with airport lounge access. If you're looking for luxury perks, the United Club℠ Infinite Card may be the better option, but United Quest℠ Card offers enough value that it's superior to other United cards for frequent travelers. If you don't think you'll take advantage of enough perks to justify the fee, or you don't travel United Airlines exclusively, consider a general travel rewards credit card that offers more flexible rewards and perks.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
