The Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card is an entry-level card option for travelers loyal to the Marriott brand. As a cardholder, you'll earn rewards on purchases made at Marriott Bonvoy™ hotels as well as other qualifying travel purchases. Plus, this card charges $0 annual fee while offering $0 foreign transaction fees and 15 elite night credits each year. Continue below for a breakdown of the card's features and benefits.

Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card: Solid value for entry-level Bonvoy loyalists

The Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card is a great choice for travelers who are loyal to the Marriott brand but don't spend enough — or stay at Marriott properties often enough — to justify getting a Marriott Bonvoy card with an annual fee. With the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card, you'll still have the ability to earn Marriott Bonvoy points, but you'll miss out on some of the perks of the more expensive Marriott Bonvoy cards. However, this is a good card if you're mainly looking to earn points.

Accelerated points on travel expenses

The main benefit of the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card is that it earns Marriott Bonvoy points on all of your purchases. With the card, you'll Earn up to 14X total points for every $1 spent at 7,000+ hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy® and 2X points on other travel purchases (from airfare to taxis and trains). You can redeem the Marriott Bonvoy points you earn for room upgrades, hotel night stays and other perks.

$0 annual fee

What sets the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card apart from other Bonvoy options is that its annual fee is $0. In contrast, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card charges a $95 annual fee and the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card charges a $450 annual fee (See rates and fees). These cards earn more points per dollar on purchases at Bonvoy hotels, but they're only worth it for higher spenders. If you're a moderate spender (i.e., under $1,500 per month in spending) or new to the world of travel rewards, the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card is a great choice.

$0 foreign transaction fees

Most credit cards without an annual fee charge foreign transaction fees on overseas purchases. However, the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card is unique in that it charges $0 annual fee or $0 foreign transaction fees. As such, this is also a great entry-level travel credit card, even though it lacks the free hotel night benefit of other Marriott Bonvoy cards. For most people, the $0 foreign transaction fees alone will make this card a solid companion on any international trip.

Solid welcome bonus for a no-annual-fee card

The current welcome bonus on the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card is excellent for a no-annual-fee card: For a Limited Time Only! Earn 60,000 Bonus Points after spending $2,000 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening. As you can see in the chart below, this is enough to get you one standard night at a Category 6 Marriott Bonvoy™ property (or, depending on your travel style, multiple nights at a lower-level property).

Note that you won't be eligible for the welcome bonus on this card if you currently hold the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card or the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express, or if you've received the welcome bonus on the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card, Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express, Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card or Starwood Preferred Guest® Luxury Card from American Express in the past 24 months.

What can you do with Marriott Bonvoy points?

With the welcome bonus, you have the opportunity to redeem for one standard night at a Category 5 hotel or more nights at a lower-tier hotel, depending on the property and dates of travel. With Marriott's far-reaching hotel network, you're bound to find a qualifying property pretty much anywhere you travel.

Marriott also provides the flexibility to redeem your points beyond nights at a hotel. Keep in mind that other redemption options may result in an even lower value in your points. The following chart estimates redemption rates, calculated by dividing the cash price (including taxes and fees) by the number of points needed.

Value of Marriott Bonvoy™ Points (in cents)
Category 5 Rooms (Standard)$0.64
Category 4 Rooms (Peak)$0.46

How do Marriott Bonvoy points stack up against other hotel programs?

Like many hotel loyalty programs, Marriott Bonvoy™ points aren't worth a ton. We value these points around half a cent per point, which is on par with programs such as Hilton Honors and IHG Rewards. Here's a chart to help you visualize how ValuePenguin estimates the value of Marriott Bonvoy™ points against its competitors:

Hotel Program
Value of points (in cents)
Marriott Bonvoy™$0.005
Hilton Honors$0.005
IHG® Rewards Club$0.005
World of Hyatt$0.017

ValuePenguin's verdict: Good entry-level card for Marriott

In general, the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card is a great card for people who stay at Marriott properties a few times a year and are moderate spenders. While you won't get a free night certificate or complimentary elite status with the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card, you'll be able to earn Marriott Bonvoy points on your everyday purchases and work your way toward redeeming them for a free hotel night or room upgrade. In addition, you'll benefit from 15 elite night credits toward status each year.

Alternatives to the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card

The Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card may not be right for you if you're looking for better loyalty perks — or if you don't want to earn points that can only be redeemed in one place. Below, we've put together a few other cards to consider.

Earn points that can be transferred to Bonvoy

On Chase's Secure Website

With the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, you'll earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points that can be transferred to a variety of travel partners, among which is Marriott Bonvoy™. If you like staying at a variety of hotel chains and don't want to be locked into one loyalty program's rewards system, then this is a good choice for you. The card earns 5X points on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3X points on dining and 2X points on all other travel purchases.

Transferable points on dining and grocery shopping

See Rates & Fees. Terms Apply. On American Express' Secure Website

Like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card above, the American Express® Gold Card also earns points that can be transferred to Marriott. As a card in the American Express Membership Rewards program, the American Express® Gold Card earns points that can be transferred to a host of hotel and airline providers. Plus, the American Express® Gold Card lets you Earn 4X Membership Rewards® Points at Restaurants, including takeout and delivery, and earn 4X Membership Rewards® points at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 per calendar year in purchases, then 1X), and 3X Membership Rewards® points on flights booked directly with airlines or on amextravel.com. Better welcome bonus and Marriott perks

On Chase's Secure Website

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card is a step-up from the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card, from the lucrative welcome bonus to its elevated earnings rate. How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
