Hertz Gold

Hertz is one of the biggest names in the rental car industry, and its loyalty program is a strong reason why. The Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program is free to join and can get you great benefits like free car rentals. This comprehensive guide lays out everything you need to know about the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program.

Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Program Benefits

Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Program

Joining the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program is free. Members get 1 point for every dollar spent through Hertz, and these points can be redeemed for a variety of rewards—most commonly free car rentals. There are few exclusions when it comes to redeeming points, as members can even rent luxury vehicles.

In addition to points, the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program offers several perks:

  • Pay no membership fees.
  • Skip the counter and go immediately to vehicle pickup.
  • Get faster reservations and returns.
  • Points don't expire as long as you've earned and redeemed points within the previous 18 months.
  • Enjoy access to members-only online auctions for travel experiences, perks and more.
  • Get free mobile updates on the type of car and its location before pickup.
  • Change cars for free at certain airports in the U.S. and Europe.
  • Enjoy the fastest rental car drop-off experience with electronic returns and receipts.
  • Enjoy Hertz Valet up to four times a year for President's Club members.
  • Choose the car you rent.

The Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program is free to join, and signing up is quick and easy. Frequent car renters stand to gain from these solid benefits, but even occasional car renters can maximize their rewards.

How to Join Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Program

To become a member, visit this page and fill out the form. Hertz requires you to have a valid driver's license and a credit card on file. While the rewards program is 100% free, Hertz still requires members to have a card on file. Once you've filled out the form, you'll be automatically enrolled as a member of the rewards program. You should expect to receive a welcome email shortly after.

Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Status Levels

Here's a quick breakdown of the status levels, followed by an in-depth description of each.

Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Program Status

Gold Status: Hertz Gold Plus Rewards

Everyone who signs up for the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program is automatically granted at least Gold status. With Gold status, you'll earn 1 point for every dollar you spend with Hertz.

Five Star Status: Hertz Gold Plus Rewards

To get Five Star status, you'll need to rent 12 vehicles or spend $2,400 within a calendar year. You'll earn 1 point for every dollar you spend with Hertz, plus a 25% bonus when redeeming points. That increases your effective rate to 1.25 points per dollar spent at Hertz.

Benefits of Five Star Status

  • Receive car-class upgrades if available.
  • Get a 25% bonus on all point redemptions.
  • Use a free CLEAR airport trial for two months.
  • Enjoy a wider selection within Hertz Ultimate Choice.
  • Transfer points to select Hertz Gold Plus Rewards partners.

President's Circle Status: Hertz Gold Plus Rewards

To achieve President's Circle status with Hertz, you'll need to reserve 20 rentals or spend $4,000 within one calendar year. You'll still earn 1 point per dollar spent at Hertz, but you'll get a 50% bonus when redeeming points, which brings your effective rate to 1.5 points per dollar spent at Hertz.

Benefits of President's Circle status

  • Enjoy a guaranteed one-class upgrade.
  • Get a 50% bonus on all point redemptions.
  • Use a free CLEAR airport trial for four months.
  • Enjoy the widest selection within Hertz Ultimate Choice.
  • Transfer points to select Hertz Gold Plus Rewards partners.
  • After the 15th, 20th and 40th rentals, receive a free Hertz Valet drive from select airports.
  • Enjoy a dedicated call center line.

Hertz Ultimate Choice: What is it and How Does it Work?

Hertz Ultimate Choice is a perk of the Gold Plus Rewards program that allows drivers to select their own vehicle rather than being pre-assigned one by the rental agent. In order to qualify for the benefit, drivers must rent a standard full-size vehicle. Currently, Hertz Ultimate Choice is available at almost every major location.

Every tier of the Gold Plus Rewards program has access to Ultimate Choice, but the cars get better as your status increases. For example, as a President's Circle status member you'll sometimes see a vehicle from the Prestige collection. As we'll cover down below, the Prestige collection includes premium vehicles like the Audi A3 or the Jaguar XE.

As you can imagine, Hertz Ultimate Choice adds a little fun to the vehicle rental experience since you'll be able to enjoy superior vehicles at a discounted price point. The downside is that whether you're able to get a premium vehicle or not will be largely luck based. That said, as a President's Circle status member even if you don't get a car out of the Prestige collection, it's likely you'll have a pick from several SUVs and some luxury vehicles.

Aside from choosing your own vehicle from the lot the other major benefit of Ultimate Choice is that it saves you a lot of time. You can be in and out of the airport within just a few minutes. Each zone is marked by status level and any car that falls under the status which you currently maintain is fair game.

Although you can't get Hertz status directly through the The Platinum Card® from American Express, cardholders can apply for a status match from a similar car rental company. Here's how to take advantage of this benefit: Enroll in National's Emerald Club Executive program as an AmEx cardholder by visiting this page. Then, enroll in the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program and send your proof of identity and proof of status with National to Hertz at [email protected]. The subject of your email should be "National."

Proof of identity documents and information:

  • First and last name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Email address

Proof of status with National (just one is needed):

  • Monthly statement indicating membership status
  • Copy of a credentials letter (membership kit)
  • Copy of a welcome letter

After you've sent the email, Hertz will begin processing your status match. Assuming you've followed the instructions correctly, you should expect the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Five Star status upgrade, completely skipping the requirement of booking 12 rental vehicles or spending $2,400 in one calendar year.

You can complete the same process if you have the The Business Platinum® Card from American Express. You'll get the same benefits and achieve Hertz status in the same roundabout way. Ways to Earn Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Points

Rent a vehicle from Hertz. Members receive 1 point per dollar spent on Hertz rentals, regardless of the country in which you purchase the rental. You'll also earn points if you incur these expenses: Hertz NeverLost, Sirius XM, gas, insurance options, additional mileage charges and car seat changes. If you're someone who travels for work on the company's dime, these additional charges may be a way to maximize the number of points you're able to receive from Hertz.

Purchase points directly. Hertz sells its points at 20 cents per point, which is significantly higher than the relative value of those points, given the number of points needed to redeem for certain rewards. If you're looking to purchase points just to reach the amount needed for a reservation, it might make sense to purchase them. Otherwise, we don't recommend you purchase Hertz points because, in most cases, it simply won't be worth it.

There are a few restrictions. You can't purchase more than 10,000 points ($2,000 worth) within one calendar year, and you must have at least 500 points ($100 worth) in your rewards account to purchase more. If you're going to purchase Hertz points, we recommend doing so with a credit card so you earn rewards on your purchase.

Getting points for past rentals. If you recently enrolled in the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program but you've previously rented cars with Hertz, you can retroactively earn points for those rentals. In order for the rental to qualify, it must have occurred in the past six months. To request retroactive credit for Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points, log in to your account and click on the drop-down arrow next to your name. Then click on "Rewards Account Activity." After doing so, you'll see a link to "Missing Points Request." Fill out the form to receive your retroactive points.

Getting Retroactive Hertz Points

What Are Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Points Worth?

According to our analysis, Hertz points are worth $0.07-$0.12 per point. We came to these figures by gathering sample vehicle rentals and dividing the amount of money it would take to complete the booking by the number of points that could be utilized as a replacement booking option. We wouldn't recommend redeeming Hertz points at a value of less than $0.07 per point.

A Word of Caution: Keep in mind that the actual value you'll get for your points will be dependent on your booking date, the type of vehicle you're booking, your location, and many other factors. Furthermore, Hertz points are highly variable when it comes to value, in fact, it's one of the most wide ranging valued rewards currencies we've seen. We were able to book itineraries where the points were valued at $0.20 cents each and other booking options left us with a value of less than $0.06 per point. Therefore, we recommend experimenting with dates and vehicle options to maximize your rewards.

Rental Taxes and Airport Fees Using Hertz Points

When you redeem Hertz Rewards points for a rental booking you'll still be responsible for paying rental taxes and airport fees separately. This will be the case even if the entire booking was paid for with Hertz points. These fees and taxes can quickly add up, depending on which airport you're flying in and out of. For example, across a dozen itineraries we found that rental taxes and airport fees accounted for approximately 34% of the total booking cost for rental vehicle's at San Francisco's SFO airport!

Should You Earn Hertz Points or Airline Miles?

Hertz partners with several airlines, including Delta and United Airlines, to offer customers airline miles whenever they rent a vehicle. These miles replace the points you'd normally earn under the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program. For example, opting for Delta Airline miles means you'd have to forgo earning Hertz points on your rental vehicle.

There's a lot of variables at play here, but generally the best advice is that you'll want to take the airline miles for bookings under $50. This is because United and Delta specify that the minimum number of miles you can earn per car rental is 500. By choosing miles on a booking under $50, you'd be earning airline miles at a rate of better than one mile per dollar, which is the standard clip at which you can expect to earn airline miles.

Keep in mind that if you have status with Delta, you'll earn more than 500 miles for each booking. Below, we layout the current miles your eligible to earn depending on your status with Delta.

Delta StatusBase Miles per Qualifying RentalPick Miles When Booking is Under
General Members500$50
Silver1,000$100
Gold1,000$100
Platinum1,250$125
Diamond1,250$125

The same applies for United; you'll earn more than 500 MileagePlus miles if you have elite status or if you have a certain United credit card.

United Status/CardBase Miles per Qualifying RentalPick Miles When Booking is Under
MileagePlus500$50
MileagePlus Chase Cardmembers750$75
Premier Silver and Gold1,000$100
Premier Platinum and Premier 1K1,250$125

Another reason we favor airline miles over Hertz points is that they tend to be more flexible. Airlines have more travel partners, which allows you to explore other redemption options. Hertz points aren't as dynamic as Delta SkyMiles or United MileagePlus miles.

If your rental booking exceeds the thresholds listed above, the decision becomes a lot more difficult. There's a lot to think about: the value of Hertz points, the value of airline miles, and redemption options for each. The only way to be able to give a solid recommendation is to know specifics about your travel plans. Feel free to drop a comment below for a customized recommendation.

Ultimately, the correct choice for most people will depend on how often and why they rent vehicles. If you rarely book rental vehicles for personal use then it would make little sense to choose Hertz points over airline miles. Similarly, if you rarely book airline tickets, it would make little sense for you to select airline miles over Hertz points. It's easy to get caught up in the idea of maximizing rewards, but ultimately the goal should be to actually use points or miles.

Ways to Use Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Points

To start using your points, simply log in to your account and click "Rent a car" from the top left-hand side of the website. After filling in your pickup location, pickup and drop-off times and dates, and desired car, check the "Use my Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points" box, which appears under the "Rental Car Type" selection box. Click this box to redeem your points toward the reservation.

Using Hertz Points
Warning: The website allows you to redeem points for more days than your actual rental, so be careful when completing this transaction. Double-check all of your dates before proceeding.

After submitting, you will be able to see all available vehicles along with their different prices. Your points will not be visible on the screen yet, so don't be alarmed. Continue through the booking process. After reaching the "Review and Book" screen, your points should now be visible. The top of the page will list your various options available for your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points. The cash total will change depending on the number of points you can use for the rental. You can use your points for any number of days as long as you have enough.

We list the standard the complete U.S. destination award chart below. You can also reference it on Hertz's site.

What's the Best Way to Use Hertz Points?

As seen above, Hertz has tons of award options; however, the best value is the one free rental day under daily rentals, which is available for just 750 Hertz points under standard rewards and 1,500 Hertz points under AnyDay rewards. Users are able to book compact cards through premium options in addition to vehicles in the Hertz' Green collection. Users also have the option to book up to 4 days at 750/1,500 Hertz points per day, depending on the reward type that's selected.

This reward type requires a minimum of two days and a maximum of four. The earliest availability of this rental type is noon on Thursday and the rental must end no later than Monday. The major restriction here is that the vehicle must be returned to the original location where it was picked up from.

Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Member Only Events

Hertz has an experience portal where its members can bid points in an auction in exchange for tickets to events. In the past, events have included concerts, sporting events and comedy tours. Bidding prices vary widely depending on the event, but we've seen some of the lowest bids start at 500 points. For a full list of events you can visit Hertz' official website.

Standard Rewards vs AnyDay Rewards

Standard Rewards are subject to blackout dates, whereas AnyDay Rewards are not. For this reason, Standard Rewards cost much fewer points than AnyDay Rewards. You should purchase the former if you want to use your points for a rental on an average day. However, if you want to use points to obtain a rental on a holiday or high-demand day, then you will likely need to use AnyDay Rewards since those are not subject to blackout dates.

Transferring Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Points

Your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points can be transferred to a number of hotel and airline partners. All you need to do is click "My Profile" in the top right-hand corner of the home page, click "Use my points," and then click "Exchange my points." Then select the program to which you want to transfer points, inputting the membership number of both your Hertz account and the program you selected. Then click "Select." It may take up to eight weeks for the points to appear in your account after completing this process.

Below, we outline the number of points you'll be able to earn for transfers for each respective travel partner. The Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program currently has 10 transfer partners, which includes airlines and hotel chains.

  • Alaska Airlines: 600 Hertz points = 500 Mileage Plan miles
  • American Airlines: 600 Hertz points = 500 AAdvantage miles
  • Amtrak: 600 Hertz points = 500 Guest Rewards points
  • Delta Air Lines: 600 Hertz points = 500 Delta SkyMiles
  • Frontier Airlines: 600 Hertz points = 500 EarlyReturns miles
  • IHG: 600 Hertz points = 1,000 Rewards Club points
  • Marriott Bonvoy: 600 Hertz points = 1,000 Marriott Bonvoy points
  • Southwest Airlines: 600 Hertz points = 1,200 Southwest Rapid Rewards points
  • Spirit Airlines: 600 Hertz points = 500 Free Spirit miles
  • United Airlines: 600 Hertz points = 500 MileagePlus miles

You can also transfer your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points to your spouse or domestic partner at no cost as long as you fulfill certain requirements. Whomever you're transferring these points to must also be a Hertz Gold Plus Rewards member, and they must reside at the same address as you. There are no limits to the number of points you can transfer or a time frame.

FAQs on the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Program

Can you transfer points to a spouse or a domestic partner? Yes, the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program allows you to transfer points to your spouse or partner. In order to transfer points, the person receiving the points must be a Hertz Gold member who permanently resides at the same address as you. There's currently no limit to the number of times you can execute a point transfer or a limit on the number of points that can be sent over.

How Do I Transfer Hertz Points? In order to transfer Hertz points, you'll need to call Hertz' rewards desk at 1-888-999-4900. The office is available Monday through Friday from 7:00am - 9:00pm central time.

How Do I Add an Additional Driver as a Gold Plus Rewards member? Spouses, domestic partners and coworkers are all considered authorized operators and can drive your Hertz rental without being added on. If you'd like to add a person that doesn't fall into the previously mentioned categories, you'll need to visit a Hertz location and sign an Additional Authorized Operated form (AAO). Each AAO requires an additional charge.

What is Hertz Platinum? Hertz Platinum is Hertz' highest rewards program tier, which is invitation only. The main benefits are listed below:

  • Guaranteed vehicle availability
  • Guaranteed vehicle upgrades
  • Car service to your departure terminal
  • Membership for your spouse or partner

How Do I Get Hertz Platinum? Unfortunately, the program is currently available through invitation only. That said, in the past, Hertz has allowed members to purchase access to the Platinum rewards tier through its deals page. While the requirements to be invited to join Hertz Platinum have never been shared, users report that being corporate travel decision makers, being a high spender or being an Amex Centurion cardholder all help your prospects of being invited.

Do Hertz Points Expire? Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points expire after 18 months of inactivity. Activity is defined as having earned or redeemed points through a car rental. In other words, if you haven't earned or redeemed points in the past 18 months then your points will expire.

How Do I Keep Hertz Points Alive? When it comes to maintaining a balance of Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points, users have quite a few options.

  • Transfer your points to your spouse or partner. If you transfer your points to your spouse or partner then the activity or lack thereof will be based on their respective account. Of course, this means your points will only be safe as long as their own 18-month window of activity.
  • Book rentals in the future. Another option is to go ahead and book a rental for a time period in which you know you'll need one in the future. Keep in mind that it's also possible to book a reward rental that allows you to cancel in the future.
  • Transfer your points to another program. Since Hertz has several travel partners, a solid option is to go ahead and transfer your otherwise expiring points to another rewards program. While it's true you'll have to forgo on vehicle rental redemptions, at least your points won't go to waste.

Summary: Overall Thoughts on the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Program

The Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program provides a suite of benefits at no extra cost. If you rent cars even somewhat frequently, there are plenty of reasons to join. Over time, you can accrue points and redeem them for airline tickets and hotel stays. There are also several ways to gain higher-tier membership without spending a penny (e.g., using American Express or airline and hotel loyalty programs), which will give you access to more benefits. If you plan to use Hertz in the future, we recommend you become a member.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
