Hertz is one of the biggest names in the rental car industry, and its loyalty program is part of the reason why. The Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program is free to join, yet members can qualify for exceptional benefits like free rentals or upgrades. Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points won’t expire as long as you earn or redeem some rewards every 18 months, and you can achieve one of the higher tiers of status with this program with select airline status or the right travel credit card.

This in-depth guide lays out everything you need to know about the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program.

Is Hertz Gold Plus Rewards worth it?

Given the fact that Hertz is the largest airport car rental company in the world, and that it offers rentals in 150 different countries, signing up for this program may be well worth it.

This is especially true since joining the program is free, and since you get a few important rental perks right away — even if you have never rented a car with Hertz before.

The Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program also makes it easy to climb up the tiers of elite status with eligible rentals, although you can skip to the highest tiers of status just by having the right credit card.

The more tiers you climb within this rental car loyalty program, the more perks you qualify for. For example, top-tier members get benefits like guaranteed free upgrades, a wider selection of rental vehicles, more points on paid car rentals, free additional drivers and more.

Hertz status levels

Like other travel loyalty programs, Hertz Gold Plus Rewards offers different tiers of status with corresponding benefits. Generally speaking, you'll get more perks as you achieve higher levels of status with the program.

Hertz Gold Plus Rewards benefits

At this point, you're probably wondering how all the Hertz benefits work in real life. Below you'll find an explanation of each benefit you can qualify for.

Hertz skip the counter

This benefit works exactly how it sounds. Instead of waiting in line to speak with an agent and be assigned a rental car, you can head straight to your car at participating locations. This saves you time, but it also limits your contact exposure.

Hertz Ultimate Choice

Hertz Ultimate Choice is a perk that allows rewards members to select their own vehicle rather than being preassigned one by the rental agent. While available to everyone who joins the program, members with a higher tier of status have access to a larger selection of vehicles over all. Also note that this perk has been referred to as Hertz Gold Canopy service in the past.

Hertz Ultimate Choice adds a little fun to the vehicle rental experience since you'll be able to enjoy superior vehicles at a discounted price point. The other major benefit of Ultimate Choice is that it saves a lot of time. Each zone is marked by status level, and you can pick any car that falls under your status level and be out of the airport in minutes.

Hertz upgrades

Joining the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program won't automatically qualify you for an upgrade, but having a higher tier of status will. For example, both Five Star and President's Circle status qualify you for a one-car-class upgrade. However, upgrades are based on availability with Five Star Status, whereas they're guaranteed if you reach President's Circle status.

Mobile Gold alerts

Mobile alerts are alerts sent to your phone regarding your rental transaction. For example, you can receive a notification if your car is ready, or which car is available and exactly where it is parked.

Hertz ereturn

Hertz ereturn lets you quickly return your car to a designated area, after which you will fill out an express return slip with information on when you returned the car, the final fuel level, return mileage, and other details. After you leave, you'll get an electronic receipt for your rental period.

Hertz Valet

Hertz Valet is a service that will drive your rental car back to the airport terminal at participating locations up to four times per year, although it's only available to President's Circle members.

Dedicated President’s Circle call center line

President's Circle members also get access to a dedicated customer service line. This can help save time if you have a request or you need to set up a new rental and can't book online.

How do you earn Hertz points?

Rent a car from Hertz

Regular members receive 1 point per dollar spent on Hertz rentals in countries that qualify for the program. You can find a list of participating countries here.

Note that Five Star members earn an elevated rate of 1.25 points per dollar spent, and that President's Circle members earn 1.5 points per dollar spent.

Should you earn Hertz points or airline miles?

Ultimately, the best choice will depend on how often and why you rent vehicles. If you rarely book rental vehicles for personal use, then it would make little sense to choose Hertz points over airline miles. Similarly, if you rarely book airline tickets, it would make little sense for you to opt for airline miles. The ultimate goal should be to actually use the points or miles.

Hertz partners with several airlines, including Delta Air Lines and American Airlines. Hertz customers can opt to earn airline miles with these partners instead of Hertz points.

There are a lot of variables here, but you're better off taking airline miles for bookings under $50 with some airline partners since the minimum number of miles you can earn per car rental is 500. At this level, you'll earn more than 1 mile per dollar — better than the average rate for earning airline miles.

Keep in mind that if you have status with Delta, you'll earn more than 500 miles for each booking:

Delta Status
Base Miles per Qualifying Rental
Pick Miles When Booking is Under
General Members500$50
Silver1,000$100
Gold1,000$100
Platinum1,250$125
Diamond1,250$125

With other frequent flyer programs, however, the perks aren't as generous. With the American AAdvantage program, for example, you'll only earn 1 mile per dollar spent, although you can potentially qualify for discounts on rental periods.

Either way, the decision to go for Hertz points or airline miles can be tricky. There's a lot to think about: the value of Hertz points, the value of airline miles, and redemption options for each. One thing to keep in mind is that airline miles tend to be more flexible. Airlines have more travel partners, giving you many redemption options.

Buy Hertz points

You can also purchase Hertz points (for a maximum of 10,000 points each calendar year), but we wouldn't recommend it. Hertz sells its points at $0.20 per point , which is significantly higher than our valuation of Hertz points.

If you're looking for a small number of points to reach the amount needed for a reservation, purchasing points might make sense. Otherwise, it's probably not worth it.

How to use Hertz points

  1. To start using your points, simply log in to your account and click "Rent a car" from the top left-hand side of the website.
  2. Fill in your pickup location, pickup and drop-off times and dates, and desired car. Check the "Use my Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points" box, which appears under the "Rental Car Type" selection box. Click this box to redeem your points toward the reservation.
  3. After submitting, you will be able to see all available vehicles along with their different prices. Your points will not be visible on the screen yet, so don't be alarmed. Continue through the booking process.
  4. After reaching the "Review and Book" screen, your points should now be visible. The top of the page will list your various options available for your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points. The cash total will change depending on the number of points you can use for the rental. You can use your points for any number of days you plan to rent as long as you have enough.
Using Hertz Points

What's the best way to use Hertz points?

Hertz has tons of award options; however, the best value is the one free rental day under daily rentals, which is available for just 750 Hertz points under standard rewards and 1,500 Hertz points under AnyDay rewards.

Users can also use points to book compact cars and premium options, as well as vehicles in the Adrenaline or Prestige collections.

Users are limited to four free rental days under the daily-rental option. Longer rentals will fall under the weekly-rental option. Also, the vehicle must be returned to the original pickup location, unless you fork over more points for a one-way rental. If not, your redemption will fall under the one-way rental award chart.

The number of points you’ll need for a rental depends on a whole host of factors. We list the complete U.S. destination award chart below. You can also reference it on Hertz's site.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
