This in-depth guide lays out everything you need to know about the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program.

Hertz Ultimate Choice: What is it and how does it work?

Hertz Ultimate Choice is a perk that allows drivers to select their own vehicle rather than being preassigned one by the rental agent. This program is actually available to all Hertz customers regardless of whether they join Hertz Gold Plus Rewards or not, but rewards members who book a mid-size class vehicle or larger have access to exclusive vehicles based on their status level.

The cars get better as your status increases. For example, as a President's Circle status member, you'll sometimes see a vehicle from the Prestige collection. As we'll cover, the Prestige collection includes premium vehicles like the Mercedes SLC or the Cadillac CTS.

Hertz Ultimate Choice adds a little fun to the vehicle rental experience since you'll be able to enjoy superior vehicles at a discounted price point. The downside is that President's Circle members are not guaranteed to get a car out of the Prestige collection. That said, they are likely to have a pick from several SUVs and some luxury vehicles.

The other major benefit of Ultimate Choice is that it saves a lot of time. Each zone is marked by status level, and you can pick any car that falls under your status level and be out of the airport in minutes.

How to join Hertz Gold Plus rewards

To become a member, visit Hertz's enrollment page and fill out the application form. Hertz requires you to have a valid driver's license and a credit card on file even though the program is free. Once you have filled out the form, you'll automatically be enrolled as a member of the rewards program. You should expect to receive a welcome email shortly after.

How do you earn Hertz points?

Rent a car from Hertz

Members receive 1 point per dollar spent on Hertz rentals in countries that qualify for the program. You can find a list of participating countries here.

Should you earn Hertz points or airline miles?

Hertz partners with several airlines, including Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. Hertz customers can opt to earn airline miles with these partners instead of Hertz points.

There are a lot of variables here, but we typically suggest taking airline miles for bookings under $50, since the minimum number of miles you can earn per car rental is 500. At this level, you'll earn more than 1 mile per dollar — better than the average rate for earning airline miles.

Keep in mind that if you have status with Delta, you'll earn more than 500 miles for each booking:

Delta Status
Base Miles per Qualifying Rental
Pick Miles When Booking is Under
General Members500$50
Silver1,000$100
Gold1,000$100
Platinum1,250$125
Diamond1,250$125

The same applies for United; you'll earn more than 500 MileagePlus miles if you have elite status or if you have a certain United credit card:

United Status/Card
Base Miles per Qualifying Rental
Pick Miles When Booking is Under
MileagePlus500$50
MileagePlus Chase Cardmembers750$75
Premier Silver and Gold1,000$100
Premier Platinum and Premier 1K1,250$125

If your booking exceeds the thresholds above, the decision becomes more difficult. There's a lot to think about: the value of Hertz points, the value of airline miles and redemption options for each. One thing to keep in mind is that airline miles tend to be more flexible. Airlines have more travel partners, giving you many redemption options.

Ultimately, the best choice will depend on how often and why you rent vehicles. If you rarely book rental vehicles for personal use, then it would make little sense to choose Hertz points over airline miles. Similarly, if you rarely book airline tickets, it would make little sense for you to opt for airline miles. The ultimate goal should be to actually use the points or miles.

Buy Hertz points

You can also purchase Hertz points (for a maximum of 10,000 points each calendar year), but we wouldn't recommend it. Hertz sells its points at $0.20 per point , which is significantly higher than our valuation of Hertz points. If you're looking for a small number of points to reach the amount needed for a reservation, purchasing points might make sense. Otherwise, it's probably not worth it in most cases.

How to use Hertz points

To start using your points, simply log in to your account and click "Rent a car" from the top left-hand side of the website. After filling in your pickup location, pickup and drop-off times and dates, and desired car, check the "Use my Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points" box, which appears under the "Rental Car Type" selection box. Click this box to redeem your points toward the reservation.

Using Hertz Points

After submitting, you will be able to see all available vehicles along with their different prices. Your points will not be visible on the screen yet, so don't be alarmed. Continue through the booking process. After reaching the "Review and Book" screen, your points should now be visible. The top of the page will list your various options available for your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points. The cash total will change depending on the number of points you can use for the rental. You can use your points for any number of days you plan to rent as long as you have enough.

What's the best way to use Hertz points?

Hertz has tons of award options; however, the best value is the one free rental day under daily rentals, which is available for just 750 Hertz points under standard rewards and 1,500 Hertz points under AnyDay rewards. Users can use points to book compact cars and premium options, as well as vehicles in the Adrenaline or Prestige collections.

Note that users are limited to four free rental days under the daily rental option. Longer rentals will fall under the weekly rental option. Also, the vehicle must be returned to the original pickup location, unless you fork over more points for a one-way rental. If not, your redemption will fall under the one-way rental award chart.

The number of points you’ll need for a rental depends on a whole host of factors. We list the complete U.S. destination award chart below. You can also reference it on Hertz's site.

You may find that a large range of vehicles (from subcompact to luxury) fall under the 750-point standard daily rate. To get more value on your points, look for the highest range vehicle possible under that amount.

Standard rewards vs. AnyDay rewards

Standard Rewards are subject to blackout dates, whereas AnyDay Rewards are not. For this reason, Standard Rewards cost a lot fewer points than AnyDay Rewards. You should purchase the former if you want to use your points for a rental on an average day. However, if you want to use points to obtain a rental on a holiday or high-demand day, then you will likely need to use AnyDay Rewards since those are not subject to blackout dates.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
