Is the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card worth it?

First Year Savings

$994 ?

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card is worth it for frequent Delta flyers looking for luxury travel perks. Though the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card comes with a pricey $550 annual fee, its welcome offer and ongoing rewards can more than cover the annual fee in the first year by our estimates. Don't forget to factor the value of other top benefits into the equation, including:

  • Delta Sky Club access (which normally costs $545)
  • Domestic first class, Delta Comfort+® or main cabin round-trip companion certificate each year upon renewal of your card
  • A free first checked bag on Delta flights ($60 savings round trip)

While this card is excellent for those looking for a luxury travel experience, its bonus spending categories are limited. When you use your Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card for your expenses, you Earn 3X Miles on Delta purchases. Earn 1X Mile on all other eligible purchases.

If you're looking for more robust spending categories, you may be better off with another Delta card. However, if you're more concerned with enjoying top perks and benefits, this card could be for you.

Earn 100,000 bonus miles

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card has an excellent welcome offer:

Earn 100,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months. Offer ends 8/3/2022.

The Delta SkyMiles earned can be used on any award flight on Delta or its partnering airlines. Delta's elite status levels allow members to enjoy perks like priority boarding, waived baggage fees, complimentary upgrades and more.

How much is this offer worth? $1,300

Who is eligible to earn it? New cardmembers whose card is not canceled or past due at the time of fulfillment are eligible to earn this offer. Cardholders believed to have engaged in abuse or misuse of the welcome offer may not be eligible to be credited.

Earning 3X miles on Delta purchases

While the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card really shines through its additional luxury perks, its earning rate isn't bad either.

Cardholders can Earn 3X Miles on Delta purchases. Earn 1X Mile on all other eligible purchases.

While this is a strong earning rate for Delta purchases, other airline credit cards offer more bonus earning categories which are more valuable for day-to-day use.

Average rewards earned per $1 spent

We estimate an earning rate for the average consumer based on U.S. Bureau of Labor data and multiply that by value of each card’s points or miles.

Redeeming rewards

You can use your Delta SkyMiles to book award travel with Delta and its partner airlines, book seat upgrades, purchase a Delta Sky Club membership, Delta gift cards and more. Typically redeeming your miles for award flights will grant you the most value.

Miles are quite easy to redeem, but because Delta uses dynamic pricing in place of an award chart, it can be challenging to know exactly how far your miles will get you. Typically, you can find flights for around 2,000 miles each way, but longer haul flights, for routes to Europe for example, usually start at 35,000 miles in economy.

Generally you'll get the most value from your miles when you book one-way first class or business class tickets, resulting in about 2.9 cents per mile on average, though you'll still get a decent amount of value booking main cabin flights (1.3 cents per mile).

Other Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card benefits

By having the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card, you will receive access to Delta Sky Clubs around the world. Airport lounges are a great way to escape the madness of airports, and many lounges have amenities like high speed Wi-Fi, drinks, snacks, comfortable chairs and even showers.

However, you will need to present a Delta boarding pass to enter, and you will not be able to bring a guest without using one of the guest passes that come with the card. You will receive two one-time passes each year.

In addition to the Delta Sky Club, you will receive access to American Express Centurion Lounges when you book a Delta flight using the card. Amex’s 40+ Centurion lounges (with more to come) are known for their level of exclusivity and luxury, including premium amenities and delicious food created by world-renowned chefs. You'll also have access to Escape Lounges, The Centurion® Studio Partner.

The card gives you an additional 15,000 MQMs after you spend $30,000 in purchases on your card in a calendar year. You can do this up to four times per year, meaning you can earn 60,000 MQMs if you spend $120,000 in a calendar year. You'll also get a Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) waiver each year you spend $25,000 on the card.

The Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) earned with your card combined with its MQD waiver can help you reach Delta Medallion status. Delta's elite status program can earn you perks like a Delta Sky Club membership, upgrade certificates, gift cards, priority boarding and check-in, and more.

Delta status requirements

Your Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card grants you upgrade priority over other Medallion members within the same status level and fare class. This can be extremely useful if you're looking to get upgraded on Delta. The key here is the priority, while other Delta Medallion members may have access to automatic upgrades, the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card moves you to the top of the list.

Cardholders will receive a domestic first class, Delta Comfort+® or main cabin round-trip companion certificate each year upon renewal of their Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card. This can be extremely lucrative if you plan to travel with a partner, especially if you want your partner to travel in first class with you (something the companion certificate on the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card doesn't allow).

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card offers cardholders a first checked bag for free. This can offer travelers $60 in savings for every roundtrip flight they take with Delta.

Cardholders will have access to priority boarding, in Main Cabin 1. Early boarding gives travelers first dibs on overhead space for your carry-on and gives you plenty of time to settle in before takeoff.

Cardholders will receive 20% back as a statement credit when you make inflight purchases using your card. This is a nice perk for those who purchase food, beverages or audio headsets on board.

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card offers cardholders a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck fee credit once every four years. This is an essential perk for any travel rewards card since it can save you significant amounts of time and hassle in airport TSA lines and at customs when returning to the country.

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card does not charge foreign transaction fees, which can save you hundreds of dollars on credit card fees when traveling abroad. Other credit cards charge a 3% fee every time you use your card internationally, which can quickly add up on a vacation.

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card offers cardholders excellent travel and purchase protections, including the following:

Travel and purchase protection
Car Rental Loss and Damage InsuranceUse your card to pay for your entire car rental and decline the insurance offered by the rental company in order to be covered for damage and theft to your rental car in a covered territory. Restrictions and exclusions apply.

Extended WarrantyCardholders can get up to one additional year added to the original manufacturer's warranty. This applies to warranties of five years or less on purchases covered in the U.S. or its territories. Restrictions and exclusions apply.
Purchase ProtectionPurchases made on your card are protected for up to 90 days from purchase date, up to $10,000 per occurrence, $50,000 per calendar year.

Drawbacks

  • High annual fee — An obvious drawback of the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card is its $550 annual fee. This may be unattainable for some consumers and could be a deterrent to applying for this card. If you'd rather not pay an annual fee, there are plenty of great no annual fee credit cards to consider instead.
  • Few bonus earning categories — Other rewards credit cards offer more bonus earning categories, including for things like gas, groceries, and other everyday spending areas. If you're looking for a card that will maximize your miles earning potential, you may want to consider another card instead.

What credit score do you need for the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card?

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card requires a 660 - 850 credit score. This may be out of reach for some consumers, so it's important to check your credit score before applying to improve your chances of approval.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
