Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance provides reimbursement in the event of a covered loss that prevents you from traveling before, on the way to or after the departure of your trip. Postponed trips may also be eligible for reimbursement. Your trip must be under 60 days to qualify.

Coverage amount. There's a maximum coverage amount of $10,000 per covered person or $20,000 per trip. Per 12-month period, you can submit claims for up to $40,000 in total.

What's covered. Trip cancellation and interruption insurance tends to reimburse you for situations that are outside of your control, although exemptions apply. While this list doesn't cover all of the possible scenarios, Chase provides the following examples as covered reasons:

  • Illness, accidental injury or loss of life of the cardholder, a travel companion or an immediate family member
  • Severe weather (leading to prevention of the start or continuation of a covered trip)
  • Terrorist action or hijacking
  • Jury duty or a court subpoena (for which waiving or postponement is not allowed)

Baggage delay insurance

When your baggage is delayed or misdirected for more than six hours when traveling via a common carrier, you're eligible for reimbursement on certain emergency personal items.

Coverage amount. There's a maximum coverage amount of up to $100 per day, up to five days total.

What's covered. The baggage delay insurance covers the purchase of emergency personal items, which includes but is not limited to clothing, toiletries and a cell phone charging cable.


Trip delay reimbursement

If your common carrier delays your trip by more than six hours or requires an overnight stay, the trip delay reimbursement policy can help pay for these expenses. The trip must be away from the cardholder's city of residence and be less than 365 days in length. This coverage applies to the cardholder, the cardholder's spouse or domestic partner and dependent children under the age of 22 years old.

Coverage amount. You'll receive up to $500 for each purchased ticket, and the coverage is limited to one covered hazard per trip.

What's covered. Any reasonable additional expenses that result from the trip delay, such as meals, lodging, toiletries, medication and any other personal expenses.


Lost luggage reimbursement

Lost luggage reimbursement provides compensation for any costs incurred to repair or replace any lost, damaged or stolen checked and carry-on baggage (and the personal items within these bags) on a common carrier during a covered trip.

Coverage amount. You can receive up to $3,000 per insured person per covered trip.

What's covered. Any lost, damaged or stolen property in your baggage can qualify for lost luggage reimbursement. Note that jewelry, watches and electronics are included within the maximum benefit amount of $3,000, and you can receive up to up to $500 per insured person per covered trip on these expenses.


Travel accident insurance

Chase offers two types of travel accident insurance: Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance and 24 Hour Travel Accident Insurance. Both policies cover accidental death, dismemberment or a combined loss of speech, sight or hearing resulting from a covered trip.

Coverage amount. You can receive up to $1 million under the Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance and up to $100,000 under the 24 Hour Travel Accident Insurance. If more than one eligible person is injured, the reimbursement amount will be divided proportionally among the covered persons.

What's covered. The Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance covers incidents when entering, exiting or riding as a passenger on a common carrier. In contrast, the 24 Hour Travel Accident Insurance covers the beginning of the scheduled departure date and ends on the printed return date.


Emergency evacuation and transportation

If you become injured or fall ill during your trip and require an emergency evacuation, you're eligible to receive reimbursement for any transportation and medical services rendered. The trip must last between five and 60 days and must be 100 or more miles from your residence.

Coverage amount. You can receive up to $100,000 for yourself, your spouse or eligible children under 19 years of age (and full-time students at an accredited university if under 25 years of age or younger).

What's covered. You can receive compensation for transportation and medical services and supplies necessary for your emergency evacuation. Transportation can include air and land ambulances and private motor vehicles.


Emergency medical and dental benefit

You can receive reimbursement for any emergency medical expenses for any sickness or accidental injury during a covered trip not covered by your health insurance. This benefit is supplemental coverage to the cardholder's medical insurance. The covered trip must be between five and 60 days, and you must be more than 100 miles from home.

Coverage amount. This benefit is subject to a $50 deductible but can reimburse you for up to $2,500 in total. You can also receive $75 per day for hotel convalescence for up to five days if deemed medically necessary by the physician.

What's covered. The following medical expenses are eligible for reimbursement through Chase's emergency medical and dental benefit:

  • Services deemed necessary by legally-qualified physicians (including osteopaths), surgeons, nurses or dentists
  • Charges for:
    • Hospital and operating room
    • Anesthetics, x-ray exams or treatments and lab tests
  • Ambulance services
  • Drugs, medicines and therapeutic services and supplies

Travel and emergency assistance services

If you ever run into an emergency while traveling, you can call the toll-free number (888-675-1461) to receive referrals and assistance available 24/7, 365 days per year. While these emergency assistance services are complimentary, cardholders are fully responsible for the costs of medical, legal, transportation and any other services or goods rendered.


Runner-up card

If you're looking for the same comprehensive travel protections that come with the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card but don't want to pay $550 annually, consider the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card instead. You'll get the same travel protections with the latter, but at a lower $95 annual fee. The only exception is the travel accident insurance, which comes with a lower coverage amount — $500,000 instead of $1 million.

Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card: Travel card with under $100 annual fee

The Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card provides excellent benefits for a travel rewards card with a $95 annual fee. You'll receive plenty of luxury perks that more costly travel cards have to offer, including an annual $100 airline incidentals credit and a $100 Global Entry or TSA Precheck credit every four years. Its extensive travel protections are just the icing on the cake, so we'll take a look at what the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card has to offer:

Coverage amount. You can receive up to $500 per ticket purchased for you and your eligible family members for reasonable expenses.


Trip cancellation and interruption reimbursement

For an eligible reason, you could claim any unused, prepaid non-refundable travel expenses due to the cancellation or interruption of your trip.

Coverage amount. You can receive up to $5,000 per person, per trip.


Baggage delay reimbursement

When your bags are delayed or misdirected by a common carrier for more than six hours, you may be able to receive reimbursement for essential items, including clothing. This protection offers secondary coverage to the common carrier.

Coverage amount. You can receive reimbursement of up to $100 per day for a maximum of five days.


Lost luggage reimbursement

If your luggage is lost, stolen or misdirected by a common carrier, you may be able to receive reimbursement for your luggage and its contents. The exact coverage amount will depend on the account.


Emergency evacuation and transportation coverage

If you or a member of your immediate family are injured or become sick and need an emergency evacuation, this protection offers coverage for eligible medical services and transportation.


Travel and emergency assistance services

Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card: Travel card with $0 annual fee

The Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card is a popular traveler's card with $0 annual fee. Lost or damaged baggage insurance

Through Wells Fargo's worldwide travel inconvenience insurance, you'll receive reimbursement caused by lost or damaged baggage when traveling on a common carrier.

Coverage amount. You can receive a maximum reimbursement of $1,000 per insured person per covered trip, of which no more than $250 may be for jewelry and fur.

What's covered. You, your spouse or domestic partner ans unmarried dependent children are eligible to receive reimbursement through these claims. This coverage applies provided the entire cost of the covered trip is charged to your card.


Worldwide travel accident insurance

Suppose you, your spouse or domestic partner or unmarried dependent children are involved in an accidental loss involving death or dismemberment. In that case, the benefit will be paid to the beneficiary designated by the insured person.

Coverage amount. You can receive a reimbursement of up to $150,000 depending on the loss.

What's covered. The accidental loss of life, or of one's limb, sight, speech or hearing while riding as a passenger in, entering or exiting a common carrier.


Premium emergency assistance services

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express offers some of the best resources and rewards for business owners. While this card comes with a $595 annual fee, you'll receive numerous statement credits that you can put toward business purchases and travel.

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance is only valid on trips purchased on or after Jan. 1, 2020. This policy is secondary to the primary insurance of the eligible traveler.

Coverage amount. You'll receive up to $10,000 per covered trip and $20,000 in a period of 12 consecutive months.

What's covered. American Express covers the following situations under its trip cancellation and interruption insurance:

  • Illness or accidental injury or loss of life of the cardholder, travel companion or a family member of the cardholder or travel companion
  • Inclement weather that prevents the trip from occurring
  • Change in military orders of the cardholder or spouse
  • Terrorist action or hijacking
  • Jury duty or court order subpoena (no postponement or waiving)
  • Uninhabitable lodging for the cardholder or travel companion
  • Physician-advised mandatory quarantine

Trip delay insurance

If your trip is delayed for more than six hours and falls under one of American Express' covered reasons, you may be eligible for reimbursement through the trip delay insurance. This coverage is only valid on trips purchased on or after Jan. 1, 2020. This policy offers secondary coverage and is in excess of the primary insurance of the eligible traveler.

Coverage amount. You can receive up to $500 per covered trip for a total of two claims per eligible card in a 12-consecutive-month period. You'll be able to receive reimbursement for reasonable additional expenses, including food, lodging, medicine and other personal use items.

What's covered. The coverage begins on the date of the trip and ends immediately once the trip is completed. The following situations are valid reasons for reimbursement:

  • Inclement weather, preventing trip occurrence
  • Terrorist action or hijacking
  • Documented equipment failure of a common carrier, such as an airline, bus or cruise ship
  • Lost or stolen travel documents, such as passports

Baggage insurance plan

The baggage insurance plan works on covered trips, and takes care of the cardmember as well as their spouse or domestic partner, dependent children under 23 years of age and any child rendered dependent because of a disability (described as a "handicap condition"). In the event of damage or loss to your baggage on a common carrier, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement under this coverage.

Coverage amount. You can receive up to $3,000 per covered person for carry-on baggage and up to $2,000 per covered person for checked baggage.

What's covered. Baggage damage or loss on a covered trip, which cannot exceed more than 365 consecutive days. Any high-risk items are subject to a $1,000 maximum per covered personal for all baggage.

Each credit card issuer handles claims differently, so it's a good idea to read up on the coverage guides or contact the benefits representative for any specific questions. As a general rule of thumb, you can receive reimbursement for non-refundable, prepaid expenses for covered reasons detailed by your credit card company. However, it's important to know that these protections aren't all-inclusive, and there are many restrictions to be aware of.

How does my credit card's trip insurance work?

To qualify for any type of coverage, you'll have to pay for your travel plans with your credit card — from airfare, accommodations and any other travel expenses. To use your credit card's trip insurance, you'll first need to file a claim and provide supporting documentation as soon as possible. Once your claim has been filed, your benefits coordinator will work with you to review your claim and provide the next steps.

Who does my credit card's travel insurance cover?

While trip insurance will primarily cover the cardholder, many policies will also allow your spouse, family members or travel companions to receive coverage. For example, Chase has one of the most inclusive travel insurance programs, and will extend coverage to your family members, even when you're not traveling with them. In general, your credit card's trip insurance will reimburse you for situations that are out of your control and are unforeseeable, causing any cancellation, interruption or loss. Restrictions will apply.

Does my credit card's trip insurance cover COVID-19?

Unfortunately, most trip insurance policies do not cover viral illnesses and pandemic situations, such as COVID-19. In the case of the current pandemic, this is a publicly known and announced situation. As your trip insurance will likely only cover unforeseen situations, COVID-19 is unlikely to fall under these protected reasons in most cases.

Should I purchase additional trip insurance?

Many credit cards will also provide complimentary car rental insurance, saving you lots of money while traveling. Some cards even offer primary rental car insurance, which can be extremely valuable compared to secondary coverage.

Purchasing additional travel insurance isn't a bad idea, as many exceptions come with these complimentary protections. For example, if you are driving instead of commuting via a common carrier, most of these travel protections will not apply. When reading up on your coverages and the protections provided, you should be familiar with the following definitions:

  • Primary coverage is the insurance that kicks in first and is payable until the limits of the plan. For credit card issuers that offer primary protection, you can file a claim with your credit card company first without having to file a claim on your personal insurance.
  • Secondary insurance coverage is in excess of your main insurance policy. After filing a claim with your personal insurance and maxing out its coverage limit, secondary coverage kicks in. You will need to file a separate claim with the credit card company.

Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
