Citi is an advertising partner

The Citi ThankYou program allows you to earn flexible ThankYou points that can be redeemed for a variety of valuable rewards. While this program is often overshadowed by its well-known competitors, such as American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards, the Citi ThankYou program should be at the top of your list. From transferring your points to Citi’s 16 airline partners to redeeming your points for mortgage and student loan payments, these rewards are too good to pass up.

Read on to learn the four reasons to appreciate the Citi ThankYou program.

Reason #1: Earn Citi ThankYou points with a variety of cards

Four cards earn Citi ThankYou points, two with $0 annual fees, one with a $95 annual fee and one with a sizable $495 annual fee. The last two cards are travel rewards cards — the Citi Prestige® Credit Card and the Citi Premier® Card — and are the only options for transferring your ThankYou points to Citi’s airline partners. Although these cards have annual fees, Citi has recently made many improvements on the earnings rate to include more everyday spending categories and benefits that make these top contenders for travel rewards cards.

The Citi Prestige® Credit Card has a high annual fee ($495) but comes with a lot of travel perks, including:

  • Complimentary fourth night stay at a hotel of your choice when booking through ThankYou.com. You can use this benefit twice in a calendar year
  • Global Entry or TSA Precheck application statement credit. Worth up to $100, renewable every five years.
  • Up to $250 in travel credit. Automatically applied to eligible travel purchases. From now until Dec. 31, the travel credit will also apply to supermarket and restaurant purchases
  • Priority Pass Select. Complimentary access to hundreds of VIP airport lounges
  • No foreign transaction fees.

The Citi Premier® Card is a mid-tier offering with a $95 annual fee with enticing perks for travelers:

  • New $100 annual hotel credit. Applicable to hotel stays of $500 or more, excluding taxes and fees, when booking through thankyou.com or 1-800-THANKYOU.
  • No foreign transaction fees.

Reason #2: You can use Citi ThankYou points for travel

What’s most attractive about the Citi ThankYou program is the number of opportunities to redeem for travel. Whether you want to transfer your points to one of Citi’s airline partners or use your points to directly book flights, hotel stays, car rentals, cruises and experiences on the Citi ThankYou portal, the possibilities are endless. If you opt for the latter option, your points will be worth 1 cent each — a standard redemption across the board.

Transfer Citi ThankYou points to 16 airlines in every alliance

To stretch your points even further, consider transferring your Citi ThankYou points to any of its travel partners with the Citi Prestige® Credit Card or Citi Premier® Card. In fact, Citi has the most airline partners of any credit card rewards program. Although Citi does not partner with any hotels, the Citi ThankYou program offers 16 airlines to choose from. You can transfer your points in 1,000-point increments to any of the following loyalty programs at a 1:1 ratio:

All of Citi’s partners are international airlines, except JetBlue. Therefore, knowing which alliance an airline belongs to will unlock all sorts of redemption opportunities, both domestically and internationally.

Keep an eye out for Citi transfer bonuses

Occasionally, Citi will offer transfer bonuses to make your points even more valuable. You can leverage these promotions to make some excellent flight awards. There’s no published schedule for these promotions, so you’ll want to save your ThankYou points to unlock the absolute best redemption.

Just recently, Citi offered a 25% bonus with Avianca LifeMiles, arguably one of Citi’s best airline partners due to its flexible redemption opportunities. For the flight above from Newark, N.J. (EWR) to Zurich, Switzerland (ZRH), you would only have to redeem 48,000 Citi ThankYou points to score this one-way business ticket — a steal considering that the flight would have been over $2,000 in cash.

Reason #3: You can pool your Citi ThankYou points together

The ability to pool your points with any Citi ThankYou cardmember is a highly underrated perk of the Citi ThankYou program. This benefit is fantastic for two reasons. Other issuers, such as Chase and American Express, have much stricter restrictions about sharing your points with other members. Additionally, most airline loyalty programs charge a fee when you transfer points balances from one account to another, potentially rendering the entire transaction pointless.

While there are a few rules to be aware of, Citi still provides a lot of flexibility when pooling your points together:

  • Shared points expire after 90 days from the date received. Therefore, it’s best only to use this feature when you have a specific redemption already in mind.
  • There is no minimum number of points required to use for points sharing, but the maximum number of points a member can share and redeem is 100,000 ThankYou points in a calendar year.

Reason #4: You can redeem your Citi ThankYou points in ways you didn’t know about

In addition to travel rewards, gift cards and cash back, there are 11 ways you can redeem your Citi ThankYou points:

  • Gift cards
  • Travel rewards
  • Shop with points at participating online partners
  • Statement credits
  • Online bill pay
  • Points transfer to airline programs
  • Points sharing to other ThankYou members
  • Cash rewards
  • Mortgage payment
  • Student loan payment
  • Charitable contributions

One of the unique ways you can use your Citi ThankYou points is to pay off your debts, such as your mortgage or outstanding student loans. This is a great option to alleviate financial hardship. You can redeem your Citi ThankYou points to receive a student loan rebate reward and monthly mortgage payment rewards for up to $1,000. To unlock this offer, you’ll have to call the Citi ThankYou Service Center during their standard business hours of operation.

Citi offers a ton of flexibility with your rewards that make holding a Citi card worth it — even when travel is limited. If you’re strapped for cash or need to pay other bills, you can redeem your ThankYou points at a maximum of 1 cent each. Otherwise, you can save your ThankYou points for future travel redemptions to increase the value.

Citi ThankYou Rewards vs. American Express Membership Rewards

When comparing travel partners, American Express Membership Rewards offer 13 airlines and three hotels to choose from. Most of your points will transfer to airlines at a 1:1 ratio, but it will depend on the program. A huge downside of the Membership Rewards program is that American Express does not allow you to share your points with anyone — only between your own accounts.

Citi ThankYou Rewards vs. Chase Ultimate Rewards

Chase Ultimate Rewards is a favored program by many with three key domestic airline partners (JetBlue, Southwest and United). Similar to the Citi ThankYou program, your Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer at a 1:1 ratio, making your transactions incredibly simple. Chase allows you to share points with people in your household for no fee but prohibits points sharing with anyone else.

Citi ThankYou Rewards vs. Capital One Miles

You can earn Capital One miles with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card or the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card. Although there are 13 airlines and two hotels to choose from, your Capital One miles transfer at a much lower ratio — with most at a 2:1.5 ratio. Meanwhile, the Citi ThankYou program makes it easy with a simple 1:1 ratio. However, Capital One is quite flexible on points sharing with other accounts, with no fees or restrictions.

Do Citi ThankYou points expire?

Yes. The expiration date of your points will depend on the Citi card that you have. To check this information, simply log in to your account to find your ThankYou points' expiration status. Shared points also expire after 90 days from the date received.

Which cards earn Citi ThankYou points?

The Citi Prestige® Credit Card, Citi Premier® Card, Citi Rewards+℠ Card and the AT&T Access Card from Citi earn Citi ThankYou points. Only the Citi Prestige® Credit Card and the Citi Premier® Card can transfer points to Citi’s travel partners.

What are the best ways to use Citi ThankYou points?

In sum, these are all of the ways you redeem Citi ThankYou points:

  • Gift cards
  • Travel rewards
  • Shop with points at participating online partners
  • Statement credits
  • Online bill pay
  • Points transfer to airline programs
  • Points sharing to other ThankYou members
  • Cash rewards
  • Payment toward mortgage
  • Payment toward student loans
  • Charitable contributions

The best way to get the most value from your ThankYou points is by transferring your points to Citi’s airline partners. But if you aren’t traveling right now, there are plenty of other opportunities to redeem your points.

ValuePenguin’s verdict

If you’re looking to diversify your points and miles strategy, then the Citi ThankYou program is worth considering. The recent improvements on the Citi Premier® Card and Citi Prestige® Credit Card include more bonus spending categories and benefits to help offset the annual fee. While understanding the nuances of a credit cards rewards program takes some time, it’s worth exploring how to make the best redemptions possible.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
