American Airlines credit card eligibility

While these sign-up bonuses are worth grabbing if you can meet the minimum spend requirements, consider these guidelines before you apply.

Requirements for personal credit cards

Citi has a few unique rules to keep in mind before you apply. These mainly apply to cardholders that like to apply for multiple credit cards. You are not eligible for any of the bonuses on this page if you have received a bonus for the same card in the past 48 months. Also, similar to the Chase 5/24 rule, Citi has unpublished policies that may limit your eligibility:

Citi 1/8: This means that you may only submit one credit card application every eight days. So if you have applied for a credit card in the last eight days and apply for a Citi credit card, your application will automatically be denied.

Citi 2/65: Similar to the rule above, you are allowed two applications every 65 days. Anything more than that will result in your application being denied.

Lastly, Citi requires at least a good credit score to qualify for any of their products.

Requirements for business credit cards

You don’t need to own a large business or have an Employer Identification Number (EIN) to apply for a business credit card. Small business owners, including online resellers, freelancers, tutors, babysitters or ride-share drivers may be eligible to apply.

You will need to supply your Social Security number, along with information about your business, such as revenue, years in business and number of employees, when you apply. If you already have an American Airlines AAdvantage number, you can input that as well. If you don’t, an account will automatically be created for you.

Keep in mind that providing your Social Security number means you will be held personally responsible for paying off the balance each month. If you only provide an EIN when applying, the credit card company cannot hold you personally liable. Before applying for the CitiBusiness®/ AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® or any other business credit card, be sure to consider your business’s financial situation as well as your own.

How to redeem 50,000 American Airlines miles

Redeeming American Airlines miles is a seamless process. If you don’t have an American Airlines AAdvantage account, you will automatically have one created when you apply for an American Airlines credit card. If you already have one, be sure to fill in the appropriate field when you apply for a card.

Once you have an account established, you can log in at the top of the left of the American Airlines home page. From there, you can search for flights and have them priced in miles by selecting "redeem miles".

American Airlines miles

Flight prices are currently unpredictable as airlines have scaled back their fleet and routes due to the pandemic. However, there are still great deals on American Airlines when using miles. In the sample flights below, a 50,000-mile bonus could cover a round-trip flight in economy from Los Angeles to Honolulu, a round-trip flight in business from Los Angeles to Miami or to New York City.

American Airlines miles
American Airlines miles

When redeeming American Airlines miles, it is important to use your miles wisely. American Airlines miles are worth an estimated 1.3 cents per point. So before purchasing a flight using miles, be sure to use the following formula to calculate the value you are earning:

Cash price (not including taxes and fees) / Number of points needed for airline ticket = Point value for that specific itinerary

A free flight when using miles sounds great, but you may be overpaying. The formula above will give you a good sense if you are getting your miles worth.

Should you apply for an American Airlines Platinum credit card now?

Whether you are interested in a business credit card or a consumer credit card, an American Airlines credit card can help you start your next adventure using miles.

Keep in mind that millions of Americans are dealing with financial hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic, and opening another credit card may not be the best option. It is best practice to consider your financial situation closely before applying for a credit card.

If you can afford to open a new credit card and meet the spending threshold for the sign-up bonus, this is a good opportunity to collect up to 65,000 AAdvantage miles that you can use down the line.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
