Changing or canceling your flight has historically been a hassle, sometimes with fees that cost more than the airfare itself. With the pandemic shaking up the travel industry, carriers such as Delta Air Lines have made it easier to change and cancel your flight.

Delta has permanently eliminated change or cancellation fees for domestic and international tickets originating from North America, with one exception: Basic Economy tickets cannot be changed, but they can be canceled for partial credit after deducting fees of $99 to $199.

Delta has also made it easier for you to change or cancel your flight without even speaking to a representative, with the ability to make modifications on the website or app.

If your travel plans have changed, this extensive guide will walk you through canceling or changing your Delta flight and the potential fees you can expect to see.

Delta Air Line's COVID-19 policy

If you are unable to fly due to the Delta COVID-19 health acknowledgment requirements, you may cancel or change your flight and any change fees will be waived. Changed flights receive an eCredit that can be applied to future travel with Delta. However, if you change your flight to a different date or destination, you must pay the fare difference.

Basic Economy tickets cannot be changed. However, you can cancel before departure to receive an eCredit equal to the price paid minus a cancellation fee. Remember that all tickets purchased directly from Delta, including Basic Economy fares, can be canceled for any reason without fees within 24 hours of booking the flight.

Delta flight change and cancellation policy

If you need to change or cancel your flight, Delta Air Lines now waives fees for main cabin or above flights originating from North America. You can change the date, time or location of your trip prior to departure without incurring any fees. However, if the new flight costs more than the original flight, you'll have to pay the difference.

Delta's 24-hour risk-free cancellation period allows you to cancel any Delta flight within 24 hours of your booking on Delta.com or the Fly Delta app. This includes Basic Economy fares, which typically are nonrefundable in most other circumstances.

If you cancel within the 24-hour window, you'll receive a full refund with no fees attached. You can cancel your flight on Delta's website or app at any time within this 24-hour period in just a few clicks. The cancellation request must be made by midnight of the day following purchase or midnight prior to the day of travel, whichever comes first.

Passengers who have a refundable ticket may apply for a refund if their travel plans change. Simply apply for a refund through Delta's online form and payment will be refunded to the original form of payment. Additionally, you can request a refund of unused trip purchases, like Sky Priority Boarding, a Wi-Fi pass, or other amenities. You can check the status of your refund online or by calling (800) 847-0578.

Basic Economy tickets are appealing to some travelers because of their lower prices, but there are restrictions on changing or canceling a flight with these tickets. While you can cancel during the 24-hour risk-free cancellation period, any other cancellations incur a $99 to $199 cancellation charge that is deducted from the price of your ticket. Refunds are received as an eCredit toward a future Delta flight.

Delta does not allow any changes to Basic Economy tickets after the 24-hour risk-free cancellation window. During that window, if you change your flight, you'll have to pay the difference.

If you need to change or cancel a non-refundable ticket, a cancellation fee may be deducted from the cost of your flight. The remaining portion of the refund is issued as an eCredit that can be used for a future Delta flight.

Delta does not charge cancellation fees for the main cabin and above tickets within the U.S., Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands purchased after Aug. 31, 2020. Main cabin and above tickets purchased after Dec. 9, 2020, and originating from North America to anywhere in the world also do not have cancellation fees. Additionally, change or cancellation fees do not apply to main cabin and above tickets between the Caribbean and the U.S. or Mexico.

If your ticket does not qualify for a waiver, change or cancellation fees start at $99, depending on your itinerary. The remaining balance is issued as an eCredit.

Delta SkyMiles award tickets have similar change and cancellation terms as cash fares, but there's a bit more flexibility. Since you're paying with SkyMiles rather than with cash, you're able to get your miles back in most cases. All eligible award tickets incur no change and cancellation fees.

If canceling your flight, your SkyMiles will be redeposited into your account. The only exception is for basic economy tickets, which cannot be changed at any time after the 24-hour risk-free cancellation period.

Basic Economy award tickets can be canceled minus a cancellation fee in miles that is deducted from the price of your tickets. Cancellation fees for travel within the U.S. or to Canada, Mexico, Central America, or the Caribbean is 9,900 miles. Long-haul international travel is charged a fee of 19,900 miles.

Finally, Delta has eliminated its 72-hour change and cancellation window. Now, you can cancel or change your award ticket at any time leading up to your flight.

What is Delta's no-show policy?

Passengers who do not change or cancel their flight prior to departure are considered a no-show. These travelers lose the value of their ticket and all remaining flights on the itinerary will be canceled as well.

How to avoid Delta change and cancellation fees

While Delta has largely updated its change fee policy, fees still apply in some scenarios. As a reminder, here are some ways you can avoid Delta change and cancellation fees when booking your next flight:

  • Cancel within Delta's 24-hour risk-free cancellation period. In fact, all airlines are subject to this rule as administered by the Department of Transportation. You can cancel your ticket within 24 hours of purchasing it without penalty.
  • Purchase a refundable fare. When searching for fares on Delta's website, click "Refundable" to see a list of fares that are refundable for any reason. While these fares will cost you much more than nonrefundable tickets, they won't incur any change or cancellation fees. In some cases, change fees can cost more than the airfare itself.
  • Watch out for schedule changes. As airline demand has changed dramatically over the past year, your flight may be rescheduled or even canceled. In the event of either happening, you may be eligible for a complimentary flight change or cancellation. You'll receive an email with options to change or cancel your flight when this occurs. For tickets issued after Aug. 17, 2020, the following situations qualify for waived fees:
    • A delay of two hours or more
    • A change in the routing of the original flight that adds one or more stops
    • An equipment change from Delta Mainline to Delta Connection
    • A change that causes a misconnect, or an outright cancellation with no comparable or acceptable routing available within two hours. You'll receive an email with options to change or cancel your flight.
  • Contact Delta customer service for any extenuating circumstances. While any other reasons aren't posted on Delta's website, you should contact customer service if you need to cancel for any extenuating circumstance.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
