Best Marriott credit card overall

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card

Earning Marriott points

Like other Bonvoy cards, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card offers an unusually high number of points per dollar spent. Cardholders Earn up to 17X total points for every $1 spent at over 7,000 hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy® and 2X points on all other purchases. That can add up to hundreds of dollars worth of points by the end of the year, even if you rarely travel.

For example, if you charged $6,000 a month on gas, grocery and dining purchases, along with seven nights stay at a Marriott hotel for $150 per night, you’d collect more than 24,000 points from your credit spending after just one year (as well as additional base points as a loyalty program member).

We also like the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card’s welcome offer: Earn 100,000 Bonus Points after spending $3,000 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening with the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card! This bonus offers a lot of value for a mid-priced travel rewards card.

It’s possible to get hundreds of dollars worth of additional value from the card’s Free Night Award, even though the most you can spend with it is 35,000 points.

According to a ValuePenguin search of hotel rooms available for March 2021, for example, you could use the Free Night Award to book:

  • A $341 hotel room within walking distance of Old Pasadena and a 20-minute drive from Los Angeles
  • A $391 hotel room within 15 minutes of downtown Boston
  • A $308 hotel room in Orlando
  • A $202 room in upper Manhattan
  • A $300 room in Mexico City
  • A $4,416 room in Barcelona

In addition to the annual free night stay benefit, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card offers a number of other hotel perks. For example, cardholders will receive:

  • Automatic Silver Elite Status, giving you access to free Wi-Fi, late checkout and other perks.
  • Gold Elite Status if you charge $35,000 a year (around $2,917 a month).
  • 15 Elite Night Credits every year, to help you climb the status ladder more quickly.

With a guaranteed free night’s stay each year, a huge number of participating properties and an affordable price point, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card from Chase offers impressive value — especially for bargain-seekers.

The card’s Free Night Award that you receive each anniversary (for up to 35,000 points redemption) is worth at least $315 alone, which dwarfs the cost of the card’s $95 annual fee.

In addition, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card offers a solid bonus on Marriott purchases and an impressive rate on general purchases, making it easy to rack up points with each hotel stay.

Best Marriott credit card with no-annual-fee

Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card

Earning Marriott points

With the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card, you'll Earn up to 14X total points for every $1 spent at 7,000+ hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy® and 2X points on other travel purchases (from airfare to taxis and trains). Overall, the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card is best for infrequent hotel guests, since it offers significantly less value on Marriott purchases than the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card.

Still, that’s a rather valuable rewards rate for a no-annual-fee card. For example, even $1,350 worth of hotel purchases is enough to earn you a 4,000-point off-peak PointSavers stay (not including your base point earnings), though you’d get the same number of points with half the spending using the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card.

The Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card's 2-point bonus on public transportation, taxis and airfare is more notable, particularly for a no-annual-fee card. Although 2 points per dollar spent is a mediocre rewards rate if your points are valued at just half a cent, it’s equivalent to an impressive 2% back if you stick to bookings that value points at a penny or more.

The Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card also makes it easy to earn free stays right away just through its sign-up bonus: Earn 60,000 Bonus Points after spending $2,000 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening with the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card! With Marriott’s flexible hotel pricing, that’s enough points to pay for:

  • A three-night stay in suburban Atlanta, near the Georgia Aquarium (worth $237 in value)
  • A three-night stay less than an hour from Florence, Italy (worth €393, or over $400)
  • A Saturday night stay in downtown Manhattan (worth $241)
  • A Saturday night stay in Salt Lake City (worth between $149 and $450, depending on your choice of hotel)

The card doesn’t offer as many hotel benefits as higher end Bonvoy cards. But like the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card, it does offer 15 night credits upon opening (which makes cardholders eligible for Silver Elite Status), as well as an additional 15 elite night credits every year, helping you get to a higher status level more quickly.

For a $0-annual-fee travel card, the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card also offers significant potential — especially if you’re willing to scout Marriott.com for deals.

With Marriott’s dynamic pricing system, for example, savvy cardholders could get hundreds of dollars worth of free travel just by using their card for travel and everyday purchases.

Unlike the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card, though, the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card doesn’t offer a guaranteed free night’s stay — so if you don’t mind investing money upfront for a good deal, the higher-end Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card is a better value. If you’re just looking for free travel without the commitment of an annual fee, though, the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card offers a lot of promise.

Earning Marriott points

The Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card is relatively unusual in the number of points its offers on routine expenses. You get 6x points at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels. 4x points at restaurants worldwide, at U.S. gas stations, on wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers and on U.S. purchases for shipping. 2x points on all other eligible purchases. The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card, by contrast, limits larger bonuses to travel.

With the card’s welcome offer included, your first year with the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card has the potential to be especially lucrative.

In addition, since American Express allows you to add employee cards to your account, you could pool the rewards from their purchases and earn even more value from your business’s spending. Like other business cards, the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card doesn’t charge extra for employee cards.

Like other Marriott Bonvoy cards, the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card also gives you Gold Elite status at Marriott properties (enrollment required). In addition, the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card exceeds the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card’s hotel perks by offering a second free night stay each year you charge $60,000. Combined with the card’s first guaranteed free night stay, that’s at least $350 to $1,000 or more in value that you can count on every year that you charge at least $5,000 a month in business expenses.

For a midpriced business card, the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card from American Express also impresses us with its value. It offers so many bonus points, for example, you may be able to earn back the card’s $125 fee with just $1,667 in hotel bills or $2,500 in gas and restaurant spending.

Like the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card, Marriott’s premium business card also offers a guaranteed free night’s stay each year, worth anywhere from $175 to over $500 (again dwarfing the cost of the card’s annual fee). In addition, its welcome offer could buy you anywhere from $375 to $1,125 or more in hotel rooms around the world.

Where the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card really shines, though, is in its unusually generous spending bonuses. Unlike other Marriott cards, the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card offers substantial bonuses on a wide range of expenses, including dining, gas, wireless and shipping.

Earning Marriott points

While the main value of this card lies in its hotel benefits and travel credits, its point earnings are also plentiful. Since the card includes a category bonus for airfare and U.S. restaurants, you earn points at a faster clip with this card than the lower-priced Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card. Cardholders Earn 6 Marriott Bonvoy® points for each dollar of eligible purchases at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy™ program. 3 points at Worldwide Restaurants and on flights booked directly with airlines. 2 points on all other eligible purchases.

A cardholder who travels and dines out often could easily accumulate enough points for an additional hotel stay each year. For instance, if you spent $15,000 on airfare and U.S. restaurants in a year, you would earn 45,000 points with the card — worth at least $225 in hotel nights, by our estimates.

On the other hand, other Marriott cards offer similar welcome offers but with lower annual fees. If your aim is just to earn a stay with Marriott in your first year, you may be better off with the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card.

The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card offers the best of Marriott hotel benefits. Like the other Marriott cards, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card offers a free night award, but the certificate is redeemable for higher level hotels (a redemption level up to 50,000 points).

The card grants you automatic Gold Elite Status with Marriott Bonvoy, entitling you, among other valuable perks, to free room upgrades (when available) and a 25% boost on your base-point earnings. Platinum status allows you to guarantee your room type, gives you access to Marriott lounges (for properties that host them) and gives you a choice of an additional award, such as five elite qualifying nights or the ability to gift Silver elite status (enrollment required).

It also offers a few very valuable credits, including up to $300 in statement credits per calendar year (up to $25 per month) for eligible purchases at restaurants worldwide. You can also enjoy complimentary airport lounge access on the way to your destination, since the card includes a Priority Pass Select™ membership (enrollment required).

Earning Marriott points

The Platinum Card® from American Express offers 5X Membership Rewards® points on flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year and 5X Membership Rewards® points on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel. Terms apply. As with most transfer partners, American Express allows you to transfer your Membership Rewards earnings to Marriott Bonvoy at a one-to-one ratio.

However, most of the card’s value lies in its travel perks, rather than its rewards program, so you may not have a ton of points to transfer.

The only points bonus the card offers is its 5X bonus on directly purchased airfare and hotel purchases that you buy directly from American Express. For Marriott Hotel purchases, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card and the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card offer a better 6-point bonus, and they also offer a better 2-point earning rate on general purchases.

The card’s welcome offer also offers fewer points than the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card, but requires $2,000 more in spending to get it. You’ll Earn 100,000 Membership Rewards® Points after you spend $6,000 on purchases on the Card in your first 6 months of Card Membership. This is 15,000 points less than what the Bonvoy Boundless offers.

If you are looking to collect a lot of Marriott points, the co-branded Marriott cards are the better way to go.

The Platinum Card® from American Express offers automatic Gold Elite status with the Marriott Bonvoy program (enrollment required), entitling you to valuable hotel benefits, including a 25% bonus on your base points earnings, 2 p.m. late checkout, room upgrades when available, a dedicated reservation line and a welcome gift (in the form of points) at check-in. Furthermore, the card gives you access to perks with other hotel programs, including automatic Gold status with Hilton (enrollment required). If you want to earn points and hotel benefits without being dedicated to one loyalty program, The Platinum Card® from American Express has much to offer.

For rates and fees of The Platinum Card® from American Express, please click here.

American Express’ luxury card is packed with high value benefits, ranging from up to a $200 travel credit (enrollment required) to up to a $100 hotel credit when you book rooms through Amex Travel. You’ll also get access to more than 1,300 airport lounges around the world, including American Express high end Centurion lounge. So if you frequently travel by air and prefer to travel in comfort, you may find The Platinum Card® from American Express’s benefits to be more than worth its $695 annual fee.

It also happens to offer automatic Gold Elite status with the Marriott Bonvoy program (enrollment required), which comes with valuable hotel perks, including free room upgrades. When it comes to Marriott Bonvoy spending, The Platinum Card® from American Express isn’t nearly as strong a value as other Marriott cards, such as the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card. However, if you want access to hotel perks without having to commit to earning Marriott points, The Platinum Card® from American Express is a good option.

Marriott credit card benefits explained

Marriott status

Marriott’s elite status program allows frequent guests to earn special perks, such as exclusive discounts and free benefits, as a reward for staying at Marriott-branded hotels. Several co-branded Marriott cards offer automatic elite status with the Marriott Bonvoy program — from Silver status with the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card and Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card to Gold status with the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card (ennrollment required). The higher the elite status tier, the more perks you’ll enjoy.

Elite night credits

Elite night credits are the credits you earn as a Marriott Bonvoy member when you stay at a Marriott property. These credits are used to help determine whether you qualify for elite status and which tier you’re in. Marriott credit cards also offer honorary elite night credits you can use to earn a higher status.

Free night certificate

A free night certificate is an exclusive benefit on select Marriott cards, redeemable for one night at a Marriott hotel for a room worth 35,000 points or less (50,000 or less for the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card). These certificates are awarded on your card anniversary with a 12-month expiration date and do not cover resort fees.

$300 statement credit

An exclusive benefit of the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card, cardholders receive up to $300 in statement credits per calendar year (up to $25 per month) for eligible purchases at restaurants worldwide.

$100 property credit

The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card gives you up to $100 of credit per booking toward qualifying purchases at qualifying Marriott properties, such as on-site restaurant purchases and spa services. Qualifying purchases do not include the cost of the room, property fees, taxes or gratuities.

Priority Pass Select™ membership

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card members also get access to Priority Pass lounges. Your Priority Pass Select™ membership entitles you and up to two guests free access to more than 1,300 airport lounges worldwide (enrollment required).

Global Entry/TSA Precheck credit

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card members get an $85 to $100 application fee credit every four and a half years when they apply for Global Entry or TSA Precheck membership. These airport security programs allow approved travelers to get faster security screening at select airports.

Free Wi-Fi

Marriott card members are automatically enrolled in the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program, which includes free in-room wireless internet service (also known as Wi-Fi) for all members.

Which Marriott credit card is right for you?

The best Marriott card for you will depend on your spending habits and budget. If you’re a frequent traveler, you’ll likely get the most value from the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card or the high-end Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card. But if you prefer less commitment, the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card still offers a significant amount of value.

Tips for using your Marriott credit card

To get the most out of your Marriott cards, be mindful of your spending. Choose which cards you use based on the number of points you expect to earn per purchase. For example, if you own a Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express, use The Platinum Card® from American Express for airfare and hotel purchases and the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card for miscellaneous purchases.

Don’t spend more than you can afford to repay in full, even if you’re using a credit card with a high credit limit. Card rewards are never worth paying high interest on a credit card balance.

In addition, reserve your Marriott Bonvoy rewards for rooms that offer a return of at least a penny or a penny and a half or more per point. Although securing a lower priced rewards room may require trade-offs, such as an out-of-the-way location or a revised travel date, it could also save you a lot of money. You may also be able to secure a more enjoyable stay by using your points to pay for pricey high-end rooms that you can’t afford in cash.

FAQs about Marriott credit cards

You can apply for a Marriott credit card online by visiting the application page for your first choice card. But since Marriott cards are issued by different lenders, make sure you’re going to the right website. For example, you can apply for a Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card or a Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card through Chase, but you’d need to go through American Express to apply for a Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card or a Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card. You can also learn more about each card and who issues it by visiting Marriott Bonvoy’s credit card page.

You generally need good to excellent credit to qualify for a Marriott card.

If you’re using a Marriott Bonvoy card, your card will be automatically enrolled with Marriott Bonvoy once you’re approved. If you’re using a card that’s a Marriott Bonvoy partner, such as The Platinum Card® from American Express, you won’t be able to link your American Express card to your Bonvoy membership. Instead, you’ll be given the option of transferring your points to Marriott Bonvoy.

It depends on how long it takes American Express or Chase to approve your application. If you’re approved right away, you may be able to use your credit card number immediately if you’re opening an American Express card. But with a Chase card, you may need to wait a while longer until your new card arrives in the mail.

Yes. However, owning two cards may limit your point earnings or perks. For example, if you have two Marriott cards that offer 15 elite night credits, you’ll only be allowed one of the card’s credits. Similarly, you may not qualify for a new card’s welcome offer if you already own another Marriott card.

No. None of Marriott Bonvoy’s credit cards charge a foreign transaction fee.

The number of points you’ll need to pay for a Marriott stay will vary, depending on the destination, date of travel and hotel. However, you can expect to pay anywhere from 4,000 points to 100,000 points for a free night’s stay. In general, ultralow rates of 10,000 points or less are typically reserved for off-peak PointSavers deals or for rooms that have been priced well below market value.

Marriott also uses a Category System to price its rewards rooms, ranging from Category 1 hotel rooms to Category 8 hotel rooms. However, a room’s category will not only depend on the quality of the hotel. It may also fluctuate, depending on the hotel’s location.

You can transfer your Marriott Bonvoy points to more than 40 partner airlines, including American Airlines, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest and United. You can also transfer your Marriott Bonvoy points for free to another member.

You can book a room through Marriott.com using a Visa, American Express, Discover or Mastercard.

Methodology

To make choosing the right card easier, we've looked at credit cards reviewed on ValuePenguin as well as cards on major issuer sites to compile a list of the best rewards credit cards available right now. Our recommendations are based on the additional value you can earn with the cards — including the rewards value, cost of ownership and value of benefits such as travel and purchase protections, lounge membership and airline companion passes. Our choices are not influenced by our advertisers. Learn more on how we calculate rewards.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
