Which Delta credit card should I get?

In order to choose the best Delta credit card for your needs, you should consider the following steps:

1. Where do you spend the most?

You'll want to choose the Delta credit card that best aligns with your spending habits, to help you earn the most miles possible.

2. Which benefits do you use most often?

If you love to relax in airport lounges, prefer free checked bags, and don't want to pay foreign transaction fees, choose a Delta card that offers these benefits. If you rarely use the additional benefits offered by credit cards, choose a Delta card that comes with fewer benefits and doesn't charge an annual fee.

3. Does the card offer a strong welcome offer?

If a card's welcome offer is important to you, choose the Delta card with the best offer. Just be sure you'll be able to reach the spending requirement so you actually receive the welcome offer.

4. Can you afford the annual fee?

Though many of these Delta credit cards come with strong welcome offers, high earning rates and a multitude of benefits, you'll need to make sure the annual fee is within your budget. If you think paying a high annual fee will be difficult for you each year, consider a card with a lower fee.

5. Do I want a co-branded or non-co-branded card?

For frequent Delta fliers and those who live in Delta hubs, a co-branded Delta credit card can be a great idea. However, if you don't consistently fly with Delta and prefer to book whichever flight has the best itinerary for your needs, you may want a non-co-branded card that gives you the option to book with Delta or other travel partners instead.

Note that when it comes to Delta credit cards, there isn't one "best one" — rather, there's a selection of cards to meet different needs. Here is a list of needs, and the card that will best suit those needs.

Features you should consider while comparing Delta cards

Delta credit cards come with a variety of Delta-specific perks and benefits. To get the most value from your card, you'll want to understand what's included with each of the following benefits.

When you hold the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card, you'll earn a domestic Main Cabin round-trip companion certificate each year upon renewal of your card. You can think of this benefit as a "buy one, get one free" ticket — if you purchase a main-cabin ticket for yourself, a companion can join you for free, less taxes and fees.

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card offers a step-up from the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card, as the round-trip companion pass is available for domestic first class, Delta Comfort+, or main cabin. The following terms apply:

  • The companion pass is only available within the 48 contiguous United States. Residents of Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands must originate their flight from there to the 48 contiguous United States.
  • When you book using a companion pass, you are eligible for Medallion Complimentary Upgrades.
  • Primary and companion tickets must be purchased with the Delta SkyMiles card.
  • Both passengers must be booked on the same flights and dates, at the same time.
  • Travel must be booked and completed by the certificate's expiration date.

The value of this benefit is determined by how much money is saved on the companion ticket. For example, if you book a $500 ticket for yourself, you can save $500 on that same ticket for your traveling companion.

You earn Delta Medallion status for regularly flying with Delta. Unlike many hotel credit cards, you cannot earn automatic Medallion status by having a Delta credit card. However, some co-branded Delta cards can help you achieve status faster by offering bonus MQMs and status boosts. Having status with Delta unlocks valuable benefits, including higher base-mile earning rates, priority boarding privileges, complimentary flight upgrades and much more.

Priority boarding privileges mean you can board earlier than other passengers, allowing you to get comfortable in your seat and grab limited overhead space for your carry-on luggage.

Delta's boarding order currently goes in this order:

Delta

When you have a Delta credit card, you are automatically bumped to Main Cabin 1 (group 5), unless you qualify for a higher boarding group.

Delta Sky Club lounges offer a great way to escape the stressful and noisy environment of an airport terminal. While each lounge is unique, many of them offer amenities like showers, food, drinks, office spaces and massages to ensure the best experience possible.

A day pass for the Delta Sky Club cannot be purchased by any Delta flier. In order to do so, you must have a qualifying Delta Sky Club membership, a qualifying Delta credit card or be flying in a qualifying class. Delta Sky Club members must pay a $39 fee to bring a guest.

With certain co-branded Delta credit cards — such as the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card — cardholders can check their first bag for free on Delta flights. Though the benefit only applies for basic card members — not for authorized users or people flying on the same reservation as you — it can save you $30 per flight, adding up to significant savings if you fly Delta often.

The Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card currently offers a $100 flight credit after spending $10,000 in purchases in a calendar year. This flight credit is only applicable to purchasing Delta airfare and can only be earned once per year.

All co-branded Delta cards offer a 20% savings on in-flight purchases, such as food or beverages, on Delta Air Lines. When you make your purchase, be sure to use your Delta credit card for payment — the discount will be applied as a statement credit to your purchase.

Status boost is a great feature for regular Delta flyers looking to obtain Medallion status. If you spend significantly on either the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card, you can earn extra MQMs that will go toward earning status.

Each Delta card has its own spending thresholds to meet in order to earn the MQMs. However, it is best practice not to overspend on your credit card to simply earn Delta status.

What are Medallion Qualification Miles (MQDs)?

For example, you need $3,000 in MQDs, plus either 25,000 MQMs or 30 MQSs, to qualify for Silver status with Delta.

How many Delta miles do you need for a free flight?

Note first that award flights technically aren't "free," as you'll still need to pay taxes and fees for your flight. The answer to this question varies widely, depending on timing and routes. However, you may only need a few thousand miles to book a short, off-peak award flight with Delta.

Can you use Delta SkyMiles on other airlines?

In a roundabout way, yes — you can use SkyMiles for flights on other airlines. While you can't redeem SkyMiles directly with another airline, you can redeem SkyMiles through the Delta SkyMiles program for flights with one of Delta's airline partners. Delta is a part of the SkyTeam Alliance, and you can use the miles you earn with Delta cards for flights on any of its 18 alliance partners. In other words, miles not only give you access to Delta's flight network, but also to a vast worldwide network of airlines, with more than 1,000 destinations in 170+ countries. Your elite status benefits, including lounge access, also apply to flights with Delta's SkyTeam Alliance partners, so you can fly in style to almost any place you want to travel.

Who are Delta's SkyTeam Alliance partners?

These are SkyTeam Alliance's other members: Aerolíneas Argentinas, Aeroméxico, Air Europa, Air France, China Airlines, China Eastern, Czech Airlines, Delta, Garuda Indonesia, ITA Airways, Kenya Airways, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Korean Air, Middle East Airlines – Air Liban, Saudia, TAROM, Vietnam Airlines and Xiamen Air.

Is a Delta credit card worth it?

Depending on how often you fly with Delta and how likely you are to use the cards' benefits, a co-branded Delta card could be well worth the investment. Benefits such as complimentary checked baggage and a boost to elite status can net you hundreds or even thousands of dollars of value each year with Delta.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
