The "R"Us Credit Card: Is it Right for You?

Good card to save money at Toys "R"Us and Babies "R"Us. Not recommended for other purchases.

The “R”Us Credit Card is a great option for shoppers who frequent Toys "R"Us and Babies "R"Us stores and are looking to earn rewards toward their purchases. This card has no annual fee and lets users earn points that can be redeemed in "R"Us Rewards Dollars, which can be applied toward "R"Us store purchases. Better cards out there offer benefits on everyday purchases, but the “R”Us Credit Card is hard to beat in terms of toy-shopping rewards and makes for a great specialty use card.

Review: Our Thoughts on the “R”Us Credit Card

The “R”Us Credit Card offers an exceptional rewards rate for purchases at Toys "R"Us and Babies "R"Us—but below-average rates for all other purchases. We recommend using this card at "R"Us stores, where it effectively awards 8 cents for every dollar spent. This kind of return is much higher than even most top cash-back cards. In terms of the rewards rate for all other purchases, the “R”Us Credit Card's 1% offering is considerably lower than many cash-back cards.

Bad For...
People who shop at "R"Us stores at least a couple of times a yearPeople looking for a daily use card
Earning rewards toward "R"Us purchasesFlexible rewards redemption

You can only use the rewards earned with this card toward more "R"Us purchases, which limits shoppers who want to use points or cash back on everyday purchases like groceries or gas. Furthermore, this card also requires some optimization before points expire. Cardholders will need to choose between banking their rewards points—in which they save them up until they reach a set amount that they choose—or receiving Rewards Dollars certificates every two weeks or so, that will expire within 60 days. If you're not careful, it would be easy to forget about "R"Us Rewards earnings and let the certificates expire.

Many benefits the “R”Us Credit Card offers can be received by signing up for the Rewards "R"Us program. You can enroll in the program for free in store or online—no approval required. This grants you access to partnership perks, the Endless Earnings program and Geoffrey's Birthday Club. However, through this program, you'll only earn half as many points per dollar spent at "R"Us stores compared to the “R”Us Credit Card.

Bottom Line: This card is worth it only if you know you'll shop at the "R"Us stores at least a couple of times a year—for example, on birthdays and holidays—as its 8% rewards rate for these purchases is exceptional. However, the 1% rewards rate for all other purchases and the limited options for the Rewards Dollars makes it a poor option as an everyday card. Instead, you might opt for a cash-back card.

Benefits and Features

The “R”Us Credit Card rewards users with 2 points per dollar spent on in-store or online purchases at Toys "R"Us and Babies "R"Us. Meanwhile, members of the Rewards "R"Us program earn 1 point per dollar spent. You'll need to spend $4 to earn 1 point on all other purchases. For every 125 points you earn, you'll get $5 in "R"Us Rewards—meaning each point is worth 4 cents. Cardholders will lose their rewards points after one year of account inactivity.

What Can "R"Us Rewards Dollars Be Used For?

Additional Benefits

If you're approved for this card, you can receive 15% off your first in-store or online purchase within the first 90 days of opening your account. Some items are restricted, such as laptops, tablets and video game hardware.

Cardholders are eligible to enroll their children in Geoffrey's Birthday Club. Kids will receive a card, gift and phone call on their birthday from the Toys "R"Us mascot, Geoffrey the Giraffe, every year until they turn 10. This option is also available to Rewards "R"Us members without applying for the “R”Us Credit Card.

You'll also be automatically eligible for the Endless Earnings program, which lets cardholders earn rewards for their baby registry at Babies "R"Us. Registrants earn 5% on the first $300 spent and 10% on all spending exceeding $300, and they'll receive a gift card loaded with their earnings 12 weeks after the expected arrival date of the baby. Cardmembers cannot earn rewards on purchases that they make on their own registry. This option is also available to all Rewards "R"Us members.

The “R”Us Credit Card vs Other Credit Cards

Here's how the “R”Us Credit Card compares to some of the most popular cash-back cards currently offered.

“R”Us Credit Card vs Citi® Double Cash Card

While the “R”Us Credit Card offers a great rewards rate for consumers who are frequent Toys "R"Us shoppers, the Citi® Double Cash Card is a better daily use card. For non-Toys "R"Us purchases, the “R”Us Credit Card offers only a 1% rewards rate. You'll earn twice that amount with theCiti® Double Cash Card, which awards 1% cash back on all purchases and an additional 1% when the balance is paid off. In terms of a net rewards rate, the “R”Us Credit Card only outperforms the Citi® Double Cash Card if the consumer spends more than 15% of their total credit card balance at Toys "R"Us and Babies "R"Us. As most people don't spend this much on toys, the Citi® Double Cash Card is a better card for most consumers.

The Citi® Double Cash Card earns cash back for all purchases that can be applied toward future credit card balances, while the “R”Us Credit Card only lets you spend your rewards earnings at Toys "R"Us and Babies "R"Us. The flexibility of the Citi® Double Cash Card makes it a better option for most users. However, because each card has no annual fee, if you shop Toys "R"Us at least once or twice a year, consider having both cards.

“R”Us Credit Card vs Capital One® Quicksilver® Card

The high rewards rate for the Capital One® Quicksilver® Card makes it more valuable for all but the most avid Toys "R"Us shoppers. For non-Toys "R"Us purchases, the Capital One® Quicksilver® Card offers a 50% better rewards rate than the “R”Us Credit Card. However, as each has no annual fee, there's no harm in having both.

Cardholders get a $150 bonus for spending $500 in the first three months of account opening, which makes the Capital One® Quicksilver® Card very valuable in the short term compared to the “R”Us Credit Card. You would need to spend $1,875, which is more than 3.5 times that of the Capital One® Quicksilver® Card, at Toy "R"Us locations to amass the same level of rewards with the “R”Us Credit Card.

The Capital One® Quicksilver® Card offers a more flexible rewards structure that can be applied to any purchase, and your rewards will not expire while your account is open. On the other hand, the “R”Us Credit Card only offers rewards toward purchases at Toys "R"Us, and rewards expire 60 days after being issued. The Capital One® Quicksilver® Card's usability makes it a better option for users who don't want to worry about when and how they can redeem their rewards.
