The Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card is a great business travel card for those who fly with Delta often or even just once a year. It offers a great welcome bonus, various travel perks and ongoing value through an annual bonus. If your business wants the flexibility of redeeming points with multiple airlines, other business credit cards offer travel rewards comparable to this card. However, the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card offers awesome perks and rewards for flying with Delta Air Lines.

Review: Our Opinion on the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card

It's clear that the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card offers cardholders a lot of potential value through its Delta perks. However, the card is most useful for businesses who plan to spend at least $50,000 on the card in order to unlock the full value of the annual miles boost, which is worth $260 per year.

The companion certificate is also one of our favorite perks available. This card is one of only two business credit cards to offer the annual companion certificate feature through Delta (the other is the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card). The value of the perk will depend on the flight, but it can easily be worth more than $300 annually considering that it's valid for domestic round-trip flights. Another one of our favorite things about the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card is you'll get the first checked bag free. While the benefit applies to the main cardholder, up to nine additional cardholders on the same reservation are eligible to receive the benefit per trip. It's easy to see that the perks you'll get with this card can add up pretty quickly. Frequent Delta travelers will get the most out of them, but even occasional Delta travelers can benefit from the perks.

Another major strength of the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card is its ability to get you a higher Medallion status rather quickly. MQMs, or Medallion Qualification Miles, are Delta's way of tracking passenger status based on distance flown. Delta has different thresholds for how many MQMs it takes to earn the next Medallion status. Aside from flying with Delta, there's only one other credit card you can use to acquire MQMs. It's difficult to place a value on the MQMs earned through the card because the cost for MQMs varies depending on who is purchasing them and the amount they are purchasing. However, considering the limited access points, it's clear that MQMs are not cheap and are difficult to come by.

The major downside of the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card is that it offers limited reward redemption options compared to other cards. If you're a frequent Delta flyer, then this won't matter to you as much. But if you're not, then you might get more bang for your buck with another card. Either way, the annual companion certificate is enough to make this card worth it even if you travel on Delta once a year. The value of the certificate has the potential to outweigh the annual fee. If you're interested in flexible rewards redemption, then consider the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card or the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card. The Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card can also be a good option for businesses with less than $50,000 in annual expenses. We discuss all of these cards in detail and compare them to the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card below.

Bottom Line: Given the great benefits and limited downsides, this is a great card if you're looking to upgrade your loyalty status with Delta or if your business has large expenses. However, if you want flexibility when redeeming your miles, there are other business credit cards you should consider.

Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card Benefits and Features

Cardholders of the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card earn 1.5 miles per dollar on single eligible purchases of $5,000 or more (that’s an extra half point per dollar), up to 50,000 additional miles per year. 1 Mile on every eligible dollar spent on other purchases. Delta SkyMiles can be redeemed for airline tickets and flight upgrades, among other things.

Cardholders of the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card are free to redeem their SkyMiles whenever, as the miles don't expire. One of the many benefits of the card is a free checked bag per eligible flight. Cardholders enjoy $60 in savings for any round-trip flight where a bag is checked. While the benefit only applies to the main cardholder, up to nine additional cardholders are eligible to receive the benefit per trip.

Annual Miles Boost

American Express offers cardholders of the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card an annual Miles Boost. Cardholders who spend at least $25,000 in a calendar year will get bonus miles. Spend another $25,000 in the same year, and you'll get more bonus miles. These are awarded in addition to miles earned through normal use of the card. Below, we outline the minimum spend requirements under the annual Miles Boost program and the bonus rewards.

Other Travel Perks

The Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card offers a variety of travel perks beyond earning miles. For instance, cardholders are eligible to receive an annual companion certificate. The certificate grants the cardholder a free round-trip companion certificate each year upon card renewal. The value of this certificate will depend on where you're flying within the U.S.

Another perk of the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card is discounted access to the Delta Sky Club. The fee is reduced from $59 to $29, which equates to a $30 discount for cardholders. Although two additional guests are permitted, they will also have to pay the discounted rate of $29 per person.

The Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card offers its cardholders in-flight savings of 20% as a statement credit when the card is used to purchase food or drinks. In addition, cardholders are assigned Zone 1 priority boarding. Currently, Delta charges $15 for this benefit. Up to nine people on the reservation can board in Zone 1 when traveling with the main cardholder.

The Value of a Delta SkyMile

We estimate the value of a Delta SkyMile to be 1.3 cents for a round-trip flight in economy class. To arrive at this value, we gathered itineraries for popular domestic flights using dollars and SkyMiles. We then divided the dollar amount by the number of SkyMiles it cost to fly the same route, and we arrived at a value for a SkyMile for each itinerary. We then took the average value of dozens of itineraries for popular domestic routes to come to one single value for a SkyMile.

The value of a SkyMile for an individual itinerary will depend on many factors, including city of origin, destination, seat type, day of the week, length of your travel and time of your flight. For instance, we found that typically flying during the weekend results in a lower value for a SkyMile when compared to flying during the week. Flying internationally for a week yielded a higher SkyMile value than flying to a domestic destination during the week or weekend. Shop around for different flights when redeeming your SkyMiles to ensure you're getting a good value. Below, we list the results of some popular routes for comparison:

The Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card is one of our favorite cards for businesses that don't have large expenses or don't care about airline status. The main difference between the two cards is the annual miles bonus available on the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card, which we previously discussed. If you don't care about status, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card offers the same SkyMile rewards at two miles per dollar spent on Delta Air Lines purchases and one mile per dollar spent on all other eligible purchases.

Highlights

  • $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $99
  • Welcome Offer: Earn 40,000 bonus miles after you spend $2,000 in purchases on your new Card in the first 3 months.

While both of these cards are great business credit cards for travel, the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card is of our favorite picks if your business flies with multiple airlines or if you spend a lot in the bonus categories . The Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card offers more rewards potential and redemption options for points. Specifically, we're eyeing the three points per dollar spent on up to $150,000 in purchases in the bonus categories. That could be worth up to $5,625 if redeemed for travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards. However, if your business flies Delta exclusively or often, the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card won't offer any of the airline-specific features the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card offers, like free checked bags, the annual companion certificate and the discounted Sky Club access.

Highlights

  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • Earn 3 points per $1 on the first $150,000 spent in combined purchases on travel, shipping purchases, Internet, cable and phone services, advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines each account anniversary year. Earn 1 point per $1 on all other purchases—with no limit to the amount you can earn.
  • Earn 100,000 bonus points after you spend $15,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

The Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card is a solid pick over the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card for businesses that want to transfer points to several airlines, or for companies that spend more at Marriott Bonvoy Properties. When comparing the two cards strictly for air travel, our favorite card for flying with multiple airlines is the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card, as it allows you to transfer points to several frequent-flyer programs. However, just be aware that you'll have to forgo on all the Delta-specific perks carried by the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card.

Highlights

  • Earn 75,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points after you use your new Card to make $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months.
  • 6x points at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
