The Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card is a good choice for frequent Delta flyers. The card offers awesome perks and rewards for flying with Delta Air Lines, including a great welcome bonus, valuable airline perks and ongoing value through an annual companion certificate. Also, the card's Status Boost® features helps you requalify for elite status each year by spending on your credit card.

However, if your business wants the flexibility of redeeming points with multiple airlines, other business credit cards, like the American Express® Business Gold Card, offer more valuable rewards than this card.

Earn 60,000 SkyMiles

Currently, for a Earn 60,000 bonus miles, 5,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs), and a $100 statement credit after spending $3,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months.

This is a valuable offer, worth around $880 by our estimates. However, if an award flight is what you're after, you will find more valuable sign-up bonuses with lower annual fees. The co-branded Delta cards also frequently feature limited time offers with more miles than this. You should time your application for the card to score one of these elevated offers — they roll around every few months.

In addition to the value of the redeemable miles and the statement credit, you'll also earn 5,000 MQMs towards qualifying for levels of elite status. Getting elite Medallion status can help you get perks while flying including upgrades when flying on Delta.

What it's worth: Around $880: $780 in SkyMiles + the $100 statement credit.

Who's eligible to earn this offer?: You are eligible if you don't currently have and have never had this card before. American Express also says that they will consider the number of American Express Cards you have opened and closed in deciding if you're eligible for this offer.

Earn 3X miles on Delta flights and hotels

The Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card earns different amounts in different categories of spending.

You'll Earn 3 Miles on every dollar spent on eligible purchases made directly with Delta and on every eligible dollar spent on purchases made directly with hotels. You'll also earn 1.5 miles on every dollar for single purchases of over $5,000, up to 50,000 additional miles per calendar year. You'll earn 1 mile per dollar spent on all other purchases.

This can be a great way to earn additional Delta SkyMiles, and with Status Boost it can also help get you to the next level of elite status.

Unfortunately, the card's spending categories are pretty narrow (you only earn a bonus on Delta flights and hotels). The rewards you earn for ongoing spend per dollar on this card are not outstanding, when compared to other travel business credit cards. When we estimate the rewards earned per $1 for the average consumer (using U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics), the earning power of the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card is low compared to other business travel cards.

Note that flexible points cards like the American Express® Business Gold Card not only offer a wider range of bonus categories, but allow you to transfer points to outside loyalty programs (including Delta SkyMiles), making their points much more valuable.

Redeeming miles

There are many different ways to redeem SkyMiles, and the value for you will depend on how you choose to redeem them. The 1.3 cents per mile can serve as a baseline as you look at different redemption options.

As you can see from the chart below, you'll often get the highest value for your miles by redeeming on non-hub flights or on flights in premium cabins. And remember that Delta has recently changed its change policy to not charge a change fee if you need to adjust your travel plans.

Other Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card benefits

Aside from its rewards program, the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card offers very valuable airline perks that can justify the card's annual fee. Here are the most notable benefits:

One of the most valuable benefits of the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card is the ability to boost your elite status. You can earn 10,000 Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) after you spend $25,000 in purchases on your Card in one calendar year. You can do this twice each calendar year, giving you the ability to get a boost of up to 20,000 MQMs each year.

In 2021, Delta is temporarily increasing the amount you can get with each status boost. For each $25,000 that you spend, you can earn 2,500 additional MQMs. That means you'll get 12,500 MQMs with each status boost, up to a total of 25,000 MQMs.This benefit can help you get to the next level of Delta elite status..

If you have this card, you'll get to board Delta flights sooner. You can board as part of the Main Cabin 1 priority boarding group. This will let you get on the plane sooner and make sure that you have room for your carry-on bag in the overhead storage.

Delta charges a variety of different baggage fees, so it's a nice benefit to be able to get your first checked bag free on Delta flights. If you have a second checked bag, you will be charged a $40 fee. One thing that makes this perk valuable is that it applies to up to nine passengers traveling with you on the same reservation.

Each year when you renew your card, you will get a Main Cabin roundtrip companion certificate good for travel within the 48 contiguous United States. There are a couple contingencies to keep in mind:

  • You'll still need to pay any taxes and fees on your companion ticket
  • The certificate is only good for the Main Cabin. You can only book a seat in L, U, T, X or V fare classes

If you purchase food, beverages or audio headsets while onboard a Delta flight, you'll get a 20% discount for having the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card. The discount is credited as a statement credit.

There are None foreign transaction fees charged on the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card. This makes it an ideal choice to use while traveling out of the country.

You'll also get up to a $100 statement credit for either Global Entry or TSA PreCheck when paying for your application with your Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card. You're eligible for this credit once every four or five years, depending on whether you apply for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry.

With the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card, you get a discounted admission rate to Delta Sky Clubs when flying Delta. You and up to two traveling companions can access Sky Clubs at a rate of $39 per person. Delta SkyClubs currently charge $59 for a single visit, so this is basically a $20 discount.

Although not as comprehensive as cards like The Platinum Card® from American Express, the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card also includes some useful travel protections for frequent travelers, including trip delay insurance, baggage insurance and car rental insurance.

How does the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card compare to other cards?

Here is how the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card compares to some other similar cards:

Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card vs. Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card

The Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card is another co-branded business card that earns Delta SkyMiles. It comes with a lower annual fee, but a smaller welcome bonus and no ability to earn Medallion Qualifying Miles.

How does it compare?

  • Annual fee: $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $99 (Better)
  • Welcome bonus: Earn 50,000 bonus miles and a $50 statement credit after spending $2,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months. (Worse)
  • Rewards earned/$1 spent: $0.015 (Better)
  • Other benefits: Free checked bag on Delta flights, Main Cabin 1 priority boarding, earn a $100 Delta flight voucher with $10,000 in credit card spend each year, 20% in-flight discount (Worse)

Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card vs. The Business Platinum Card® from American Express

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express is one of American Express's most premium credit cards. Its annual fee of $595 (10/14-1/12/22) is much higher, but also offers significantly better benefits, including the ability to access Delta Sky Clubs when flying Delta. Its welcome bonus is also higher, and the Membership Rewards points you earn transfer 1:1 to Delta SkyMiles.

How does it compare?

  • Annual fee: $595 (10/14-1/12/22) (Worse)
  • Welcome bonus: Earn 120,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $15,000 on eligible purchases with your Card within the first 3 months of Card Membership. (Better)
  • Rewards earned/$1 spent: $0.033 (Better)

Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card vs. the American Express® Business Gold Card

The American Express® Business Gold Card is another great option for frequent Delta flyers. The annual fee on the American Express® Business Gold Card is slightly higher but the welcome offer and ongoing earning rates are also better. In fact, if you spend a lot of money on travel, the 4 Membership Rewards points per dollar you can earn on travel with the American Express® Business Gold Card make it a better option for Delta purchases than the Delta card itself (which only earns 3 SkyMiles per dollar spent).

On the other hand, the American Express® Business Gold Card doesn't give you all the airline perks that you get with the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card. If you fly often with Delta, benefits like priority boarding and free checked bags may make the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card the more valuable option.

How does it compare?

  • Annual fee: $295 (Worse)
  • Welcome bonus: Earn 70,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $10,000 on eligible purchases with the Business Gold Card within the first 3 months of Card Membership.* (Better)

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
