The BJ’s credit cards may not be as good as other cash back credit cards, but it’s still worth consideration. Depending on which card you get, you can get between 3% and 5% back on BJ’s purchases, and 2% back on gas and restaurant spending. The BJ's credit cards are a great deal as long as you don't mind getting in-store vouchers as rewards.
Review: Should You Apply For a BJ's credit card?
Those who frequently shop at BJ's can find decent savings with their store credit card. With the exception of the Chase Freedom Flex℠, we’re hard pressed to think of many cards that can give better savings for BJ's shoppers. The credit cards also feature a decent 2% savings on gas and restaurant purchases – you also receive $0.10 off each gallon of gas purchased at BJ’s.
The card’s restrictive redemptions are its main shortcoming. All the cash back you earn is posted to your account to be withdrawn as vouchers in $10 increments that expire six months from the date issued. In turn, these can be used to pay for merchandise at BJ’s stores. Your rewards can expire if not used, which we explain in greater detail below. Also, there is no way to turn your rewards into actual cash. Other warehouse credit cards, such as the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, allow you to receive a cash reward certificate. This extra freedom gives those cards a lot more flexibility and value.
The welcome bonuses on the BJ’s credit cards also leave a lot to be desired. In fact, both the BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card and the BJ’s Perks Elite® Mastercard® Credit Card currently lack sign-up bonus offers. The highest-ranking cash back credit cards give welcome offers of $100 and more. The BJ's credit cards are outmatched on that front, but compensate slightly by providing discounts on BJ’s membership fees.
Bottom Line: If you shop at BJ’s these cards are worth getting. While they may not be your one go-to credit card for all spending, they can provide high rewards in-store.
My BJ’s Perks Credit Card: Benefits & Features
The BJ’s credit card's primary function is earning cash back rewards. Depending on which of the two options you go with – BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card or BJ’s Perks Elite® Mastercard® Credit Card – you will earn either 3% or 5% back on most in-Club and BJs.com purchases. You also get $0.10 off every gallon of gas you buy at the wholesale club. Given the current price of gas, that comes out to a rewards rate of 4.2%. Gas purchases outside of BJ's and restaurants net cardholders 2%. All other non-gas purchases provide a return of 1%.
All the rewards you earn accumulate into your account. You can withdraw them in $20 increments, to be used for merchandise at the store. As we mentioned above, you cannot redeem the rewards for actual cash back. Once you receive your reward voucher, it will expire within six months. It’s a good idea to only take them out once you have a clear use in-mind. Don't hold on to your points for long. They will expire if not used for 36 months.
The cards themselves have no annual fee. However, you must be a BJ's member to apply. The BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card is available with the $50 membership, while the BJ’s Perks Elite® Mastercard® Credit Card requires $100.
BJ’s Easy Renewal Discounts
Once you apply for any of the BJ’s credit cards, you will be auto-enrolled in the ‘Easy Renewal’ program. Your store membership fee will automatically be billed to your credit card when it’s due. With the BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card you receive a $10 discount, while the BJ’s Perks Elite® Mastercard® Credit Card gives $25. That reduces your BJ's Membership Costs to $40 and $75 respectively.
BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card vs BJ’s Perks Elite® Mastercard® Credit Card
Generally, if you spend at least $1,750 per year at BJ’s, you’re better off with the BJ’s Perks Elite® Mastercard® Credit Card . The math works as follows:
The cost difference between the two credit cards is $35, once you factor in the Easy Renewal discounts. The next step is to determine if getting 66% more rewards makes the higher cost worth it. At what point does earning 5% versus 3% cover the $35 cost? To calculate that, divide $35 / 2%. This comes out to an annual spending of $1,750.
The table below summarizes the key elements of each.

|Annual Fee||$0 Annual Fee||$0 Annual Fee|

How Does The BJ’s Credit Card Compare To Other Credit Cards?
We compered the BJ’s credit card against other noteworthy cash back offers. You can only pay for most purchases with one credit card, which presents an opportunity cost problem. When comparing cards, we look at the different scenarios where using one is better than the others. This allows us to more accurately measure their value.
BJ's Visa Card vs. Chase Freedom Flex℠
For a cashback card with greater earning power and more flexible rewards, the Chase Freedom Flex℠ card is a good choice. The card lets you Earn 5% cash back on eligible purchases in rotating categories, 5% on travel purchased through Chase, 3% on dining and drugstores, and 1% on all other purchases.
The 5% bonus category, which rotates each quarter and covers up to $1,500 in purchases per quarter, often includes gas purchases:
January - March
April - June
July - September
October - December
|Gas stations, internet, cable, phone services and select streaming services||Gas stations and home improvement stores||Grocery Stores (excluding Walmart and Target) and select streaming services||Walmart PayPal|
Aside from being a great option for gas at least a quarter of the year, the Chase Freedom Flex℠ card's bonus on travel and restaurant purchases also makes it a great option for foodies and travelers. Moreover, the card's rewards don't expire and can be redeemed in a variety of ways, including as statement credits toward any of your purchases — so you aren't stuck redeeming certificates at BJ’s.
BJ’s Credit Card vs Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer
The Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer should be considered by those who want above-average rewards across all merchants. The card lets users Earn 2% on every purchase with unlimited 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchases. When it comes to shopping in-Club, the two BJ’s credit cards are the clear winners. You can get much better returns than you would with the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer. In net value, the cards are tied when it comes to dining and non-BJ's gas purchases.
The Citi card reigns supreme in all other instances. While the BJ’s credit cards will give you 1% back at most merchants, the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer maintains its high rate everywhere you shop. If gas, dining, and BJ's represent only a small fraction of our total expenses, we recommend going with the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer.
