Using our pet insurance comparison tool and research, ValuePenguin reports on the top ten most expensive feline companions to insure. Here are the cat breeds that our research found to be costlier to insure:

ValuePenguin’s Most Expensive Cats to Insure

1. Abyssinian: Playful, curious, and both vertically and horizontally inclined, Abyssinians rank as the 5th most popular cat breed in 2012 by the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA). According to popular culture knowledge, these cats originate from Ethiopia, or Abyssinia, as the country was called previously. Their resemblance to felines depicted in pyramid and mural walls reinforces this belief. In general, pet insurance for these cats is approximately 30% costlier compared to the average feline breed.

2. Tonkinese: This breed is prized for its loving and social nature. The Tonkinese is the first pedigreed cat with blue eyes, and was bred as a cross between Siamese and Burmese cats. They’ve served as muses and inspirations for a collection of poems dating back to the Ayutthaya Kingdom of Siam in the 14th to 18th centuries. Buying pet insurance for a Tonkinese cat will cost 28% more than getting feline insurance for the average cat.

3. Persian: The CFA’s most popular breed in 2012, Persian cats are 25% more expensive than the average feline breed to insure veterinary benefits for. These cats are known for their gentle and sweet dispositions, open faces, and expressive eyes. Their origins are shrouded in mystery, but their long and beautiful coats have been written about as early as 1684 BCE.
