Lufthansa offers a number of airline credit cards depending upon the country you reside in. The Miles & More® World Elite Mastercard® is the airline's US-branded credit card issued through Barclays. The card comes with a pretty sizable signing bonus: earn 50,000 bonus miles if you make $3,000 in purchases within the first 90 days and pay the annual fee. With airline rewards generally worth a minimum of a penny each, and on average more, new Miles & More® World Elite Mastercard® cardholders are being enticed with over $500 worth of bonus miles.

Review: Use the card for cheaper trips to Europe

With most of Lufthansa's main routes focused on Europe, it should come as no surprise that this card is really suited for travelers flying to and from European countries.

Great Value As A Supplemental Card For Traveling To Europe

Consumers will find most of the awards travel options going through European destinations, so it makes the most sense if you frequently travel there or may be planning a trip soon. Getting the most out of the card requires cardholders to take advantage of its most notable feature: the annual Companion Ticket, a buy-one-get-one free pass on an economy trip from the US to Europe, the Middle East, Africa or Asia.

Despite the card's $89 annual fee, the ticket and signing bonuses easily make the card a very good value if you can manage to take advantage of these benefits. With a 0% foreign transaction fee, the card's main features just scream "Take me to Europe!" and is likely one of the best options for shoppers who are looking for a way to save on a trip.

Average Spending Rewards For An Everyday Card: You Can Do Better

As an everyday card however, the Miles & More® World Elite Mastercard® performs a little worse. The rewards earned from using the card itself really aren't anything special. With the ability to Earn 2 award miles per $1 spent on ticket purchases directly from Miles & More integrated airline partners. Earn 1 award mile per $1 spent on all other purchases., the card's rewards structure comes in around the middle of the pack. For a card that you would use everyday, there are plenty of better options, with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card likely being the best. If you're looking to get the Miles & More® World Elite Mastercard® for the sole purpose of building rewards, we think you'll do better with other rewards credit card options.

Best Uses For This Card

Frequent Lufthansa Business Flyers:For the rewards structure on the card to be worth it, cardholders really need to fly Lufthansa a large amount of time to take advantage of the double points. Otherwise, the awards themselves just don't pack enough of a punch to make the card stand out. For consumers who pay for flights on their own credit card and expense it to their employer, this might be a great way to get extra rewards from flights you already need to take.

If you're planning a trip to Europe:As we mentioned above, if you like travelling to Europe or any of the other destinations Lufthansa flies, you can take advantage of the companion pass and signing bonuses to get hundreds, if not thousands of dollars worth of discounts on flights, especially with the companion ticket.

The Companion Ticket

From a value perspective, the Companion Ticket is probably the biggest benefit of the Miles & More® World Elite Mastercard® to note. Unlike the signing bonus which you only get once, the Companion pass is a perk that you'll qualify for every year after you make your first purchase. The ticket basically gives you an additional economy class ticket on one itinerary that you book each year, essentially a two-for-one deal on one trip. While some restrictionsdo apply in how the ticket can be used, the value of the Companion Ticket shouldn't be underestimated, and is easily worth hundreds of dollars.

Rewards Redemption

Obviously, the award miles can be used for flights and upgrades on Lufthansa. But they can also be used towards Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS and other Star Alliance Flights.

How We Calculate Rewards: ValuePenguin calculates the value of rewards by estimating the dollar value of any points, miles or bonuses earned using the card less any associated annual fees. These estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, not those of the card issuer, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.

Example of how we calculate the rewards rates: When redeemed for travel through Ultimate Rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth $0.0125 each. The card awards 2 points on travel and dining and 1 point on everything else. Therefore, we say the card has a 2.5% rewards rate on dining and travel (2 x $0.0125) and a 1.25% rewards rate on everything else (1 x $0.0125).
